holy poo poo e. watching it all the way I would have thought it would do more damage, but I guess TOW isn't ideal for anti-personnel? Phil Moscowitz fucked around with this message at 18:58 on Mar 25, 2017 |

Phil Moscowitz posted:holy poo poo ATGMs use HEAT (high explosive anti-tank) warheads, which direct the explosion in a single direction to penetrate armor. They're meant to be an alternative to kinetic weapons for punching through armor plates, and thus have very little fragmentation or blast overpressure away from that direction. The explosion looks huge, but it's not doing a whole lot if you're not standing in the missile's direct path. A few 40mm grenades would have been cheaper and done more damage to the group, but those are hard to fire from 2 or 3 miles away. There's a video out there of a missile hitting a gun emplacement in a damaged building; specifically, it flies over the machine gun and hits the wall behind the crew. Neither are blown apart, and one guy is actually killed by falling out of the building rather than the explosion.

Pesticide20 posted:There's more than one missile type for the ITAS I haven't seen any videos of ATGMs being used against infantry that demonstrated the kind of damage you'd expect from an anti-personnel warhead. All of them have been ones like that: the few people immediately behind the unfortunate sod to get a direct impact from an anti-tank missile and maybe the guys closest to him are toast, while everyone else gets to run away. Even if the TOW proper uses it, there's a lot of Soviet missiles like the Kornet being used in the area that I don't think ever had HE or fragmentation warheads.
