All art is inherently political due to either passively reflecting or actively subverting the norms, traditions and politics of the time-period its creator shaped it within. However, that doesn't mean that everything is suited for political analysis.

To create something like apolitical art, you had to separate it completely from any human socialization, which is basically impossible, not at least because even the rejection of (your) human socialization is a political statement.

Most people who have a problem with the idea that art is inheritly political have a very limited definition of politics, as only the organization of government affairs instead of the general organization of society as a whole.

I.e. how can breath of the wild be political if it isn't about health care reform?

I'm having difficulty seeing much political subtext in still-lifes and landscape paintings, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Still-lifes are pictures of inanimate objects. You know, like the classic bowl of fruit next to a bunch of flowers. I guess there could be some political significance to what sort of objects are considered acceptable material, and in what artists achieve prominence, but when you're just drawing an interesting piece of wood you found washed up on the shore, it can be hard to see the direct subtext.

EDIT: poo poo, and now I remembered how classic still-lifes are generally supposed to have a particular allegorical message in the objects selected and their arrangement, like a skull in the background of an arrangement of flowers to represent the transience of beauty. I guess that just leaves landscape art, and that has a political element in what parts of the landscape are OK to create pretty pictures of (you won't see many pictures of the beauty of a Brazilian favela outside specialist exhibitions).

nobody is "making" anything political, it just is, human society, how we relate to one another, is politics, it permeates everything to some degree, even an apolitical work is a statement that rejects that, which as hard as whoever tries to do that, is a political statement itself

The real world will, again tomorrow, function and run without me.

There was an art movement of beautiful grand landscapes that got popular in the early 20th century Europe if I'm not mistaken. It was tied to a wave of nationalism as a way of showing how beautiful and pure their country was.

Also, there's a somewhat famous portrait of a Swedish king which was drawn and sent to the queen of England in order to convince her of marrying him. She refused because she didn't want to give up any of her power.

There's usually a lot of politics behind very inconspicuous things and art history is way interesting and selfies are old as gently caress.

Etymologically and conceptually 'landscape' has, from the start, been ineradicably implicated in urban and political life, in property and commercial relations. Again, this remains so even when the image seems most innocent of such connections. In a natural landscape, any kind of marker of human presence and human usage [...] inflects that landscape, connects it however vestigially with the insignia of human control and organization. Pictures of wild scenery, without a trace of cultivation or human presence, appeal largely because dramatize that landscape's own untrammeled liberty. [...] Images of landscape, pastoral or sublime, are images of retreat, refuge, retirement. They are places where political life emphatically is not, and therefore remind us of what is absent.

A movie, like let's say "Get out", obviously has a point about race. But you can just watch it as an enjoyable thriller. But as a black person I would have had a hard time not connecting with the movie's political commentary, and if that was something I didn't feel like I had the strength to deal with I wouldn't give it a watch (I did and I really, really liked it). Seek out stuff that isn't too close to something you find upsetting. Try to suss out subjects that don't affect you as or doesn't make you think about the stuff that's making you uncomfortable at the moment. "Force Awakens" probably had some politics in there that I didn't notice because I was too busy enjoying the pew pew, hrrrr and waum waums.

It is possible to enjoy a movie without obsessively trying to compare it to the human condition.

I say this both as a person who had a horrible depression/mania and could barely enjoy anything but horror movies without spending waaay to long thinking about it or getting weirdly emotional. And as a person who had to learn not to ruin an entire movie for myself because it had a bad cut, sound or something distracting in the background for less than three seconds, in one scene.

What I'm trying to say is, never ever leave your home and embrace the abyss.

The human condition is a pretty broad subject, though. Unless you mean The Human Condition (1959-1961, d.p. Yoshio Miyajima), though that's also pretty broad.

Wasn't like I was going to buy Yooka-Laylee anyway, but from what I've gathered by talking to people on other places, a few of them said something along the lines of "By the time the game would have come out, no one would have been talking about Jon anymore, but through doing this, they've only caused the conversation to flare up yet again, costing them in the long run." Jon being in the game on launch wouldn't have done anything to harm the game. Removing him, has had the opposite effect- now some people are turned off, others are getting refunds, and now this is an Iron Fist style thing where there's more conversations about the controversy surrounding the product rather than the product itself.

Not "muh SJWs/freeze peach" or whatever strawman is being gathered from out-of-context Twitter photos.

And if people wanna cancel their pre-order, then fine, vote with your wallet and all that.

Yeah I think people underestimate the amount of folks with disposable income who are willing to throw bux at a product when its creators give bigots the boot. (Or even just hadn't heard about this niche game and might actually genuinely like it.)

Plus I mean maybe it's bad business but the team still considers "Lost some money" to be preferable to "Associated with a fuckin white supremacist." I know it's hard to believe but even in the US not everyone makes their decisions purely based on profit.

That I understand, but if you're not someone with a knowledge of art history or techniques, it's something that you wouldn't necessarily pick up on.

With modern (contemporary?) works, I feel like there are cases where it would be difficult to do.. The question I always wanted to ask is, "If all works are political, what kind of politics, messages, or what-have-you can you get from Gobliins 2?" I admit I'm being facetious about that, but it's the kind of thing where I feel like you'd be hard-pressed to gleam a similar form of political analysis. The only thing I think you'd be able to gleam from it is maybe cultural differences in art style and game design.
