The PS4 was one of the fastest selling consoles ever, so if people really were avoiding it because it didn't have enough games, it sure didn't show in the first year of its release.

That's kind of the point. Lack of launch games doesn't necessarily matter to a console's success. Sure, the switch doesn't really have anything besides Zelda with a Mario Kart port and Splatoon 2 coming soon but it might not matter.

Yup, quality and quantity of games at launch are not important factors, it's important to relay the correct message through naming conventions and building hype. I'm remembering the PS2 launch games back then, they were all awful, and it still sold like hotcakes.

BF4, TR2013 and AC4 weren't exactly forgettable releases though, they were all well-reviewed and popular titles with next-gen graphics that you could get on a PS4 without spending $1200 like you would for PC.

Yeah but on PS4 you could get Lara's hair rendered in beautiful TressFX, which was maybe the most important advancement in gaming over the past 20 years.

I remember lamenting that I couldn't afford a PS3 on release, and being hopeful that I could afford one by the time they released Kingdom Hearts III... (I bought one of the GoW red guys for TLoU & MGR:Revengeance at the rear end end of the life cycle, it was glorious)

Finally got to and past the Proving in HZD. That sure was something.  I'm finally getting used to the controls and things are starting to feel more natural. After coming off NieR, I felt clunky and slow in this, but I am finally pressing the right buttons to do things.

I think when I drilled down to an instinctive playstyle for Horizon like it was a shooter and not a melee combat game, the gameplay really clicked for me. Aloy doesn't feel clunky and slow when she is rapid-firing arrows like Hawkeye

Throughout most of my playthrough I relied on the idea that entering melee combat meant that something had gone terribly wrong, only relaxing this in the endgame when it becomes possible to stunlock every robot smaller than an elephant with the R2 attack. Using melee against humans is never good, though.
