I always thought it was weird that they cancelled the Note 6 (which didn't have the battery issues) and did the Note 7 instead.

If I recall correctly it wasn't so much the size of the battery but the shape that caused issues in the Note 7. A manufacturing defect caused electrodes to come in contact with each other on one of the battery's curved edges, top right corner if I'm not mistaken.

Got to play with a Moto G5 today in a Best Buy mobile store. Very nice looking phone. Premium feeling, and very quick. Didn't feel like I was holding a sub $300 phone by any means.

mod sassinator posted:There was an extensive investigation into the battery issue and wasn't it found that Samsung just didn't design enough clearance to allow the battery to expand as it charged? Literally trying to shave a few millimeters in thickness from the phone caused all of their troubles. As the battery expanded a bit it compressed the lithium cells until they would internally short out and catch fire, explode, etc. There's no way to fix it short of putting in a smaller battery or enlarging the case. No chips or circuitry were to blame. Oh I know it was entirely on Samsung I'm just saying they have a hole to fill PR-wise and it would be hilarious if they took the opportunity to poo poo on Qualcomm by indirectly implying they had something to do with it by always including their chipset as part of the old hardware that got changed to fix the explosive phone syndrome. Officially it's the battery clearance all the way down. Marketing wise why not use the opportunity to tarnish Qualcomm's reputation a bit without ever saying the words "Fire-breathing Snapdragon"

All I had to do was clear app data and it went back to normal.

So now that the S8 info is out, what other flagships are on the horizon with a firm release window? I'm up for a new phone on Verizon and at this point it looks like either grab a Pixel XL or preorder an S8, depending on how they're priced.

There is likely a Moto Z2 out sometime this summer. Since it has to maintain backwards compatibility with Moto Mods, you pretty much already know what it looks like (just with the new elongated fingerprint sensor that the G5+ has). The only real change will likely be iterating the SoC to SD835.

The data is going to be sold to marketing firms, etc. and they're going to tell this dude from Chattanooga to get lost. Wtf, my stock Nexus 6p charger is suddenly not working (plug it in, no charge fast or slow). I've changed outlets and rotated the cable to no avail. Will try trickle charge off of USB at work tomorrow, but what are my options for buying an emergency usb-c charger local some time tomorrow? I'm in Canada and have a Best buy nearby and am scared after reading all these USB-c horror stories. Edit-very strange, charge indicator is flickering on and off several times per second. I enable battery saver and it turns off immediately because a slight charge is detected for a fraction of a second. Scaramouche fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Mar 30, 2017 |

The note 7 cost them $5B. Even if you don't believe in their competence, you can likely trust their greed. Another battery issue would mean the end of the company, so I'd suspect they are actually taking things seriously. The tiny 3000mAh battery in the S8 is evidence of this, I think. That said, that the general response to this wasn't "always have a removable battery" (from all phone companies) kind of blows my mind.

It's because removable batteries are pretty much impossible with today's design considerations.
