While there are no upgrades for individual ships, the slowly building up your fleet over the course of the game aspect is pretty well-represented in Homeworld. Even assuming you aren't massively abusing Salvage Corvettes to go way over the nominal ship cap.

You don't lose shields by ramming. You lose shields by ramming in the middle of a battlegroup so that they all focus fire on your ship. Also Brace for Impact works a lot better when used before ramming.

They also have the advantage of time not flowing as it should in the Warp, so they can spend all the time they need to tune up their ships. As long as they keep up the sacrifices to the Dark Gods, I'm sure they can kinda-sorta ensure that their ships come out when they need to. What determines when you get access to battleships? Is it a turn timer or is it some form of levelling system? I don't think Herp's ever mentioned it.
