Frigates were badass in Civ 5.

Naval ranged units in general were useful for coastal city defense - you can only have one ranged unit in a city, but you can have two if one's of them's a boat.

Battleships also had good range and did very good damage to ground units, making then very useful for supporting when attacking

Civ4 handled navies fairly well especially on archipelago maps, since it was easier to blockade. That said they still weren't super useful outside of that specific type of scenario.

If they wanted to make navies more viable, then they should have land units require escorts or even to carry them. Something like a dedicated transport or that normal navy vessels can carry x amount of land units, similar to an aircraft carrier. Obviously things like workers and trade should be able to do without. I think it would make you build atleast a certain size navy for your army to assault by sea and to drive fights into the sea. Having a catapult that is able to fight at all at sea is just bizarre.

That would be great for another reason too: moving dozens of land units individually across the sea is annoying and dangerous. I miss transport ships

Transports suck for the player, but allowing most naval units to transport units natively would mitigate it i think. Of course you still have the issue of players being able to start on an island, and be unopposable until they are already 2 era's ahead of you.

The Civ4 (iirc) devs have gone on record saying why transport ships sucked; in addition to annoying the poo poo out of players it was a major pain for the AI and naval invasions/landings had to be special-cased, which players caught on to and abused. Old games did it for immersion reasons, new games don't do it for gameplay reasons. The few that do have it abstracted a bit, like Stellaris etc.

I still have the same technical problem with this game as at launch where my sounds gradually start disappearing after a while, starting from the music followed by the narration and finally rest of the sound effects. I can't really even find anyone else with the same problem and switching to 48 kHz which has apparently been the solution for other audio issues doesn't many any difference.

It feels like some kinda sync issue but I can't figure out what causes it, it's a real bummer.

Did the patch tune the AI to be more aggressive/opportunistic? I'm playing a King game as Cyrus, and took out Australia early, leaving 4 other civs. I had easily the strongest army when out of nowhere I got joint DOW'd by two of them (one was friendly), and then a few turns after, got joint DOW'd by the remaining two. I only had a warmonger score with one of them, actually, so it wasn't like I was at negative a billion with everyone for taking out Australia. In usual civ fasion though, I just sat there and destroyed all their units until they gave me everything for peace.

Did you make a slingman?

Kalko

You can use your first couple of units to cover your starting area to chase off the scouts. If you move towards them they'll usually move away from your units on their turn, and once you identify the nearest barb camp it's worth killing it with your starting warrior. When you kill a camp any scout attached to it will suicide on your unit (same as the spearmen if you took the camp while it was outside).

It's not always possible to prevent scouts from setting off the clown car rush but with practice you should get a good feel for how to do it. Also, I don't bother making scouts anymore (on Immortal). My first unit is almost always a slinger.

Is zone of control a thing you have to research? Whenever I go early game barb busting I usually bring a warrior and a slinger/archer. Upon approaching a camp, the drat thing still manages to circumvent the warrior and hit the ranged unit. Very annoying.

I did they just kept coming and even worse pillaged everything. It wasnt really until turn 40 where i had no enemies in my borders. Had kind of a crappy start area too which didnt help. In 200 points behind and cant amass a good enough army to take em out.

I think so yes, actually. I think it might be one of the early military civics. Military tradition?

I'm starting to think there might be a bug with the AI not being able to tell how strong your army is. I had Tomyris hating me the whole game for having a weak army when I had by far the strongest in the game. And several times people who I had a green smiley relation with would surprise war me when they had no realistic chance of winning.

Also turning off barbarians gets rid of the huge lag between turns.

I believe warriors start with zoc. If you have an autosave and screenshot I can elaborate, but even with an Archer, the only way to be safe is with terrain or being directly opposite. Now, heavy cavalry can ignore zoc, but I don't know what barbarian horsemen count as. I can't explain it to well on my phone, but later with pic if you need.

To quote random steam guy: ZoC also works differently: a unit that moves into a hex within enemy ZoC (even from outside) loses all its movement points, but it can still attack if it would have had ennough movement points before losing them.

All cavalry ignore ZoC. "Cavalry" definitely do, and they're light cavalry.

I can't say based off one game, but I was frienldy/DOF with two of them before they joint warred me. Harald and Tomyris I can understand, Harald kept denouncing me for having a weak navy (I had no coastal cities gently caress off), and Tomyris is Tomyris. But Jadwiga and Gilgamesh I was legit friends with, or at least friendly when the DOF wore off. I don't have the stamina/interest to do pure domination games, so even though I can roll the world with my Immortals right now, I just can't be bothered.

I've played through two games since the patch and in both civs who I am friendly with and have all +s to diplomacy and have even been in DoF with have suprise war'd me when they had no chance of winning. Oddly after they sue for peace they shoot right back to friendly again. But then again Civ 6 AI and diplomacy is so janky I have no ability to tell bug from feature anymore.

I just won a game as Cyrus and the cheevo for that popped up. I didn't realize you can use CQUI and still get steam achievements. I thought if you used a mod from the workshop that achievements were disabled in games. This is why I rarely used mods for games like this (what can I say I like seeing cheevos as a way to track progress on civs/victories/etc).

As far as I can tell no mod disables Steam achievements in VI. It claims using Firetuner does but I haven't tested that either.

It doubles most of the AI bonuses (+16% research and +40% production instead of +8% and +20% etc.), it's not exactly ultra difficult since this is still Civ VI we're talking about but you do definitely notice the difference.

Magil Zeal

Emperor is the first difficulty level where the AI gets an extra Settler to start so that's a pretty big step up.

I'm fairly confident that this isn't broken and is just a misunderstanding since ZOCs work slightly different to Civ5, but I obviously don't know what you're seeing and could be entirely wrong.

Are your two units adjacent to each other? Here's my sloppy understanding and diagram of ZOC.

Green: The barbarian spearman can freely move to any of the green tiles without interacting with ZOC.
Yellow: Upon moving into the yellow square, the barbarian spearman can attack any red tile (or the warrior, of course).
If the slinger isn't directly opposite the spearman, it's working as intended

Huh, I guess I just misunderstood it. I thought that a unit trying to move directly around a hostile melee unit would use all its movement points, thus limiting movement to one tile per turn.

In your example, I have my ranged in the red tiles adjacent to the warrior. I figured the ZoC enacted by the warrior would inhibit the spearman from hitting those red tiles (while a calvary unit would still be able to).

If Roland Jones, who's the only one in Pacific time, could join as the last one, that would be great. AI's been buffed. Instead of being laughable it can actually irritate you (not much more than that).

AI on the other hand can actually conquer each others so you can get some runaways that eat a few neighbors and challenge you other ways.
