Anyone got some useful input on this? Also I never played the noble war but I imagine they have a lot of warhammers and picks and stuff right? So armor might not be that good there and you want a good HP cushion. Once you get overwhelm on some bowmen, getting to reliably debuff two, four or more enemies a turn starts feeling pretty cool. That said, it's hard to beat a build that is just heavy armor, macho man fatigue, and melee attack. I really want to try a dodgy dagger duelist with overwhelm but it's a very specialized kind of guy and my first attempt died around level 5. For me the dump stat is Ranged Defense because kite shields make up for it so well.

As for getting a lot of greatswords my advice is firstly don't loving rush it - you need underdog, reach advantage and battle forged and a minimum of 200 head and body armour for it to be even slightly viable, and your merc needs a decent amount of melee attack and defense and enough fatigue to use everything. To get to this point I strongly focus getting heavy armour in the midgame, well before I start to transition to greatswords. This keeps your brothers alive, which lets them get more xp and saves you gold which then lets you buy more armour, etc. You don't need a particularly special recruit though, even a guy with 0 melee defense and 0 stars at level 1 will have 20+ at level 11 with a little bit of luck. I will kick non-exceptional units which get a few bad levels early on if I have a suitable replacement. Plus if you end up hiring like 20 or so extra farmers and brawlers you don't strictly need over the first month of gameplay you will get at least a few with really good traits or talents. At ~150-250 gold a pop that isn't a huge investment.

Statistically speaking their defense values aren't terribly bad (on average a few points lower melee def and a bit more less ranged def compared to non-martial backgrounds - it just feels awful when they're negative) and they have huge hp, fatigue and resolve totals. The resolve is the thing that's easy to miss since otherwise they can seem like just retarded farmers with lower defense. I don't buy them when they come with expensive weapons but the cheap naked ones are good. They also look bad rear end.

Reach advantage makes great swords super viable. Hit once and you get better than a round shields worth of melee defense. You also get extra stacks per target hit so you can easily get 2 or 3 stacks with a greatsword hit and their skills. With heavy armor and battleforged theyre super tanky.. steel brow is mandatory for me, partially because it prevents instakills from crits and necrosavants have headhunter.

w/r/t food, I usually buy a varied diet for my dudes, comprised mainly of the cheaper of the long-lasting foods like mushrooms, roots/berries and goat cheese. This is more than enough to trigger the varied food boost( I've had it two times in one game so far), and doesn't destroy my budget the way meat, wine etc. would have.

I haven't made it past day 20 so far, everything goes well until one guy gets an arrow in the face and then suddenly the battle turns into a downward spiral and oh my god everyone is dead except for the one guy with low resolve I like where the difficulty is at but I wish there was an option between beginner and veteran. Money is my biggest problem on veteran, I'm always broke can't buy armor because I need more recruits, have to buy more recruits because the old ones died due to lack of armor

Also those find artifact missions with the ancient auxillaries can kit you out with decent 90-95 armor hats On day 15 i did a find artifact mission that netted me a unique heavy chain shirt that had ~250 armor. Man that was cool, i also got a 210 armor pot helmet from a named bandit leader a few days earlier, couldn't believe that poo poo. I restarted from my previous campaign to test out a few new optimizations, since i hardly paid any attention to the quality of the dudes i hired

if you need more armor flails are your friend because all those dumbass bandits who think just because they have mail and a shield they can run around with do-rags on their head will get their skulls caved in without damaging their chainmail. bandits drop the third tier flails early and often too so you shouldn't need to run around with the lovely flails for long if you feel like committing to them

In my latest run I've gotten the Noble War event for the first time. When it started, I helped one of the houses take a single town from another one, but after that I couldn't find a single war-related contract for a good ten days. One or two have finally popped up, but now the house I helped the first time is at war with the third house, instead, for some reason. I'm not sure if that is normal or not? Either way, since I've already pissed off one house, I'm not sure I want to piss of a second one. Can anyone confirm that houses will stop wanting to murder you after the war ends within some reasonable amount of time? Also, entirely unrelated, but I happened to notice that as well as increasing the fatigue of both kinds of direwolf armor, they bumped up the penalty on Scale Armor at some point. You can walk away from a fight with 7 or 8 bandits with three or four Worn Mail Shirts, which are excellent early game, and, bizarrely, the second most efficient (armor-30/fatigue) non-unique armor in the game, after Direwolf Mail. Even if you're past giving a poo poo about the sort of armor bandits wear, give them some daggers anyway in case you find a contract to hunt down a terror that turns out to be dudes dressed up as direwolves. I wouldn't bother with it for ancient auxiliaries, though. Their helmets (at least the Ancient Household and Legionary helmets, which are the only ones I've seen) are some of the worst in the game: Ancient Household helmets are 95 armor/-8 fatigue, compared to Padded Kettle Hats, which are 140/-8; Ancient Legionary Helmets are 130/-10, vs Closed Flat Top Helmets, which are 170/-10.

Nobody said they were good hats, but 90 armor hats when all you've got are 50-60 is pretty good with the ease they are to acquire, which is what i was getting at since 4x aux is a common contract fight at the start. A long time ago in Beta, equipping a war dog would lower your max fatigue. I just realized that's not the case anymore and now that I've been experimenting with them, I need to point out how good they are for anyone else who wasn't using them. They're an equippable item with no drawbacks that lets you use an action to summon an AI-controlled expendable dodge tank on a nearby tile. If you're fighting Greenskins that try to flank you and hit your archers, the dogs will keep them off long enough for your archers to kill a few off. They always move right after the brother that summons them, so even your front-line guys can use them to stop a distant target from fleeing or to put an obstacle between them and their enemies when they're injured. Moving out of a target's zone of control with Quick Feet then locking them into your own zone with a placed war dog is pretty huge. They have enough dodge to survive fairly well against even mid-tier opponents like ancient legionnaires. AI archers trend toward shooting at them too since they're relatively unprotected and you can place them in front of your ranks. Equip a dog on everyone you can afford one for.

The noble war is a 3-way free for all - each house is at war with the others, but you won't be hostile to them unless you accept contracts against them. When the war ends all relations get reset to peace, although certainly not friendly.
