as with every other large scale political event, there are a lot of confounding variables here: many factors contributed to the win on ahca but among them, however small its contribution, was an active and aggressive public presence it's something that can create, and has created, momentum, and something to take a moment to appreciate and celebrate, before turning to the next fight kudos to everyone who made calls, sent letters, got out into meetings or protests, or otherwise contributed

I'm hoping to see some results in our township elections this coming Tuesday. The Democrat running for Township Supervisor has really gone all-out, taking this incredibly seriously and doing a great job getting her name out there. I hope it makes a difference.

I think its mainly because of Americans being used to their two-party system so "the fascists didn't become the largest party" automatically translates to "they lost", even though it was a win for the fascists as they gained seats. They only didn't become the biggest because the right-wing liberal party basically moved to the political position the fascists were, last election.

In my podunk city's mayoral race they're sending O'Malley to campaign for the D candidate tomorrow and then Bernie is coming later on during the general phase (it's got a Louisiana-style primary-runoff setup instead of party primaries). It's Omaha, in case anyone hasn't read anything anywhere it's basically a cornfield with a half million people in it.

Bloomington/Normal had a Democratic sweep kind of a night. Not a clean sweep - but drat close to it. And the Normal Mayoral race is within 7 votes (3,113 to 3,106), with 35 outstanding absentee ballots that they're giving 2 weeks to arrive. So that's headed to a recount basically no matter what. I'm thrilled Sarah Grammer won; she's been amazingly active and I wouldn't be surprised to see her running for state or even national office in the coming years. She's the first Democrat to even bother running for the seat since 1971. I am disappointed Jodie didn't win, though; my wife met her at the Chicago Women's March, which is how we got connected to all of this in the first place. Anyway. I've considered running for a water board or something. One guy tried to convince me to run for a position as a judge, because it pays really well and I had a good chance of winning, but drat, I don't think it's a good idea for someone with no legal training, and only a high school diploma to be a judge.

So Bernie Sanders has endorsed one of the Democratic candidates for Governor of Virginia, Tom Perriello, who is already the guy I was inclined to support. Obviously his endorsement isn't a magic wand but it's one more thing on the pile of things that makes me think a more passionate, outspoken guy is right for this particular historical moment. The other candidate is a good guy who has been a good lieutenant governor and I'd obviously vote for him in a general but with Trump in office the time has come for outspoken advocacy of resistance and progressive causes over genteel and measured movement.

There are two books that just came out--Hegemony How-To and No Shortcuts--that are supposed to be updated to Alinksy. I hear the name Kate Bronfenbrenner a lot too in an organizing context. There's also a recent history of direct action and protest called, appropriately enough, Direct Action that might give you inspiration or motivation.

My buddy was one of his top 5 campaign people for his congressional run back in 08. My buddy was a sophomore in in college at the time. It was a real shoestring campaign against a poo poo heel republican, I think Virgil Goode went on to run for a 3rd party in a presidential bid, but Perriello is an awesome guy. He was one of the incoming dems who fell on their swords to get the ACA passed, actually ran on the dem record in congress as a positive and was promptly thrown out by his rural dipshit district. I'm not sure what kind of legal work he's been doing from then to now but he was a great congressmen who I would love to see as the head executive in Virginia. Hell, if he pulls that off he might even have a shot at a federal political office. The man can handle a crowd.

IIRC he spent the last several years as the us special envoy to the congo, so he's been doing mostly diplomatic stuff of late. Seems it worked, though, they just had a major power sharing deal he helped broker.

I live in Tom's old district and I am super glad he is making a run for it. We all know the ACA isn't perfect but I will always be very grateful that Tom decided the chance to make some peoples lives better was more important than getting reelected. He knew for certain that casting that vote was gonna get him voted out, but did it anyway. Northram seems fine in an abstract way, but in my opinion Tom is strait up better all the way. Also I sincerely think Northam gets the poo poo kicked out of him by Ed Gillespie (the likely R nominee).Northram is strait up boring and uninspiring, hes not gonna be convincing anyone to go out and do something they are the fence about, like ya know, vote.

Try to pick up the first one at a library or something though. Luntz is a shithead. As for canvassing, I recommend you think deeply about why you're involved, find the the story that motivated you from sitting on the sidelines to engaging in the thick of it. That story is your in. Connect to people with your story and they'll connect to the rest of your message.

I'm planning on getting involved locally soon (wanted to get started sooner, but getting used to things after moving, depression, and the search for a job have complicated things), and intend to visit the local county Democrat office on Wednesday, as well as join some of the local Democratic clubs. I never really liked Bragg's version of the internationale, something he said about simplifying the lyrics for working people always came across as very paternalistic to me. Modena City Ramblers do some great Italian partisan tunes. Check out Dick Gaughan for some good old Scottish socialist stuff, and The Wakes for a more modern take.

My city has five or six things going on this year. May Day in the US is muted compared to other countries because of our history of violent suppression of workers and legacy of anticommunism. We're the only country with "Labor Day" so nobody knows May Day, like how our version of Armistice Day/Remembrance Day avoids mentioning World War I and shifts attention to living veterans and a different holiday acknowledges our military dead so that we can continue to be vicious militaristic beasts enforcing a hegemonic global consensus.
