Mouse Dresser posted:Dinner time! Back on page 4, but these guys remind me of when I was a janitor at a college. Watched a litter grow up on campus, and shared a snack or two with them. One even tried to climb into my lap to get more of my cinnamon apple crisps. I gave him the bag, and he licked his grubby little paws so he could get every particle of cinnamon dust. Had to make a few improvised ladders to get them out of the dumpster, ten minutes before the garbage truck came.

I have always heard racoons make horrid, destructive pets. Can anyone confirm/deny?

It's very dependent on the individual really. Most of them are quite sweet until puberty, when some start becoming especially territorial and can be violent even if they've acted like angels with their people or even other pets. They are absolutely not domesticated animals, and even incredibly well behaved "pet" raccoons will take apart anything they can get their hands on and try to dig holes in the walls and all that. I wouldn't recommend most people try to adopt one, not the least because it's illegal in most of the US and you'll need a specialty vet to care for them. There are definitely success stories out there, but there's only so much you can do. That being said, they can be raised to get along with other animals and they really are incredibly intelligent and have personalities, and all the worries about disease vectors are taken care of provided you treat it like a real pet, with regular medical care and shots and everything.

I've heard that spaying/neutering them keeps them from getting vicious once they turn into teenagers

This is Bandit, the Guinness World Record fattest raccoon. Due to a severe thryroid problem Bandit had ballooned up to 75 pounds by the time of his death. He had a loving owner who raised and took care of him along with two puppies and thanks to that care he lived for nearly 10 years before passing shortly after his doggo brothers
