People might think "who the hell types random unicode characters into their stuff?" but if you copy paste content from word documents or pdfs this poo poo happens all the time, and people use stuff like word to spell check their stuff more than you'd expect so this poo poo ends up all over the place.

For example, unicode contains things like a variety of different widths of whitespace characters. I recently discovered that if you send a message containing normal spaces via Skype for Business, it will convert them to some sort of unicode space. Someone sends you a powershell snippet or a hosts file line, lol, have fun running in circles for a while until you realise what happened.

Having characters that are indistinguishable from each other is a recipe for gently caress ups, security or otherwise.

well I think the url would be presented as Unicode in the client so it wouldn't look fishy except for the font differences. but then you could probably find a similar font and make it all fit.

i had to install a font that specialized in wide unicode support to render the text properly

the good news is that with ~120k glyphs it's impossible to have a single otf render everything

It's not just MS.

I ended up using a clipboard manager on my Mac just so I can default all cut and paste of text to be plain-text. In the rare case I need to preserve formatting, I can override my default setting on it.

Although now that I think about it, it mostly is an issue when copying text from an MS Office document.

seconded, i paste a lot of stuff into excel and i hope whoever decided that the default option should be copying all the formatting (and not having a plain text shortcut) stubs their toe everyday

re: unicode domains, not that regex ever solves anything, but why isn't icann or whoever doing a check for visually similar characters? i mean i don't get why anyone should be able to buy googlé.com or googl𝗲.com and gently caress them if they think the proper mitigation is buying thousands of domains

Plaster Town Cop
i ran across an interesting bit of trivia today.

a long time ago - at least 15 years - i worked at a small isp. it, like many, provided small-time webhosting and some cgis like counters and most importantly the mailform.

like all mailforms, eventually it got discovered and used to post spam, so I restricted the addresses it could mail to to the customers who were actually using it, and the spam stopped. but I kept logs of attempts to use it.

one day a new contender appeared: a yahoo.com login phishing website, using our mailform and attempting to send to someone else, which was of course rejected. the surprising part is that they never bothered using a different mailform that was unsecured.

a year later, I noticed i was still getting hits, so i detected the source domain and put up a big bright red "HI YOU GAVE AWAY YOUR LOGIN AND PASSWORD TO SCAMMERS. GO TO THE REAL YAHOO AND CHANGE IT NOW."

... today i found out it's still getting 2-3 users a day attempting to login from the same damned scam website, hosted on a freewebhost in romaina. The phishing page isn't updated, doesn't have yahoo in the URL anywhere. did I mention not updated? because it's a time capsule to late-90s yahoo login page.

2-3 people a day for 15 years.

That's not even the best part. Logs show a significant number of them get the bright red warning message, hit back and type in their username and password again and submit again.

id ask how the gently caress are users so monumentally stupid but i did tier1 tech support so i already know.

relatedly, is there a way to get link metrics for a website you don't own? I really want to know how people are stumbling over this obscure webpage 15 years later.
