flosofl posted:

Yeah, that what's that whole "have you ever tried to unmake soup?" comment SK made to Syd. He planted the seed that if they tried to force SK out of David both of them would die. Syd was absolutely convinced that David was going to die and no one was listening to her.

My take is that was only part of SK's motivations for telling Syd that. The other being he lost control of David and *he* couldn't "unmake the soup" to escape either. I feel the situation was more dire for SK than it was for David. So Syd was SK's Plan B to get the gently caress out of Dodge. I think at that point, SK just wanted out to regroup and get some breathing space to come up with a plan to re-take David and all that power he craves at a later date.

otoh, Oliver himself is implied to be pretty powerful, and on top of that a genius. maybe SK finds him to be a better host?

I just scanned through the thread so I apologize if I'm repeating what others have already said or shot down.

I saw a lot of hate for Syd and her being "the girlfriend" without much more, but I actually really thought that was intentional character work for her. The moment it hit me was when David first talks about leaving and going after his sister and she sort of panics and offers to change for him and let him touch her. It was this really sudden neediness and clinginess and that's when I realized Syd had spent her entire live lonely and isolated and having an unhealthy attachment to David was entirely a result of that. The way she risks everything for him and makes decisions entirely on saving him is all part of how he's given her a connection and a way to feel that she's never had. Its not healthy but none of these people are healthy and that's kind of the point.

I think people are unnecessarily criticizing Syd's characterization.

She had agency. She saved David and other people more than once. She has her own issues, which Stack Goat pointed out (I mean remember the how she lost her virginity story?) She's not just there to be the girlfriend, and she chose David as much as he chose her.

He was positioned as a government man with a heart from the beginning.

Was he? I viewed him as just another government psychopath willing to go to any means to get what they wanted from David in that first episode. Granted, this was the first ep, where I was still very disoriented with the whole "just wtf is going on in this show" aspect, David was the only viewpoint of everything I had so far, and I haven't rewatched any of the episodes.

flosofl posted:

Because he was folded up and crumpled like a piece of paper and was very obviously dead in ep 7? Did you need them to show what they did with the remains or something?

I don't think it's unreasonable, as the show has jumped around many levels of reality, David's psyche, and even astral planes, and it's not clear what exactly the rules are in all of them, or just what powers everyone has, and Eye Man has been shown to have some powerful poo poo up his sleeve so far. Plus, he's not the only significant character that was stuck in that place who we've seen nothing about since last seeing scenes there, and there have already been other characters coming back from seemingly irreversible death like states in other realms. Combined with being a show that has comic book influences, I don't think it's unfair for someone to want to see, or still wonder about, his current fate, even if it is as a crumpled, crushed, and cubed corpse horrifying bypassers at a location in the real, physical world.

I rewatched the Bolero sequence (because it's so damned good), and when he was crumpled up in the Astral plane, in the real world he had sheets of blood streaming out of his skull. As uncertain as we can be about the reality of this show, I think it's pretty fair to say he is D-E-D dead and not coming back.

When the "pause" ended, you can see the crumple re-playing out in real time/world. Cary also has a callback to it in the finale when playing up how dangerous SK is, "You didn't see the blood pouring out of Walter's eyes.."

I don;t like how the last episode didn't resolve whatever happened to the eye character at all. Like why even spend most of the season on this villain if he isnt going to get screen time in the last ep?

I thought that was an intentional subversion, the Eye was an amoral attack dog and the fact that he had powers was kinda immaterial to that, that just made him more useful to his superiors. Meanwhile his working partner who doesn't have powers is a family man who believes in the cause and can be swayed by reason, despite being flash-fried by his enemies.

I really love what they did with his partner. You feel bad for him because he wasn't wrong, David was a huge Goddamn threat to everything. If he ends up ally or enemy, I understand where he's coming from.

And The Eye got the best TV death I've seen in forever. Said it before but that was straight out of a classic 80s horror movie, felt like it belonged in Hellraiser or something.

I really appreciate how understated he was. He was creepy, intense, thoroughly menacing, and then right when you just couldn't look past how horrible he was prepared to be, he gets the most gruesome death in the show and all told he has , what, a dozen lines across 6 episodes? I also really can't tell you the last time i took someone with such tight curls so seriously, and I say that as a very curly-haired person.

Someone posted earlier that Shadow King might be looking for another very powerful mutant now that David is no longer an option. Considering he was looking for something Xavier knew about, anyone else think he may be looking for Cerebro? When I first thought that I said "too comic booky", but then again, a floating orb kidnapped David, so now I'm on the maybe camp.

I said that I think, but I don't remember when it was said or implied that whatever he's looking for is something Xavier knew about.

I think Cerebro is something too closely identifiable with X-Men for that to be in S2.

Tortured By Flan
Finally caught up with the show and the thread.

I thought The Final Battle between David and the Shadow King took place long before they ran down the corridor at each other. That final act was all the Shadow King had left. It was a now-or-never moment and it lost. If it hadn't found another compatible host so quickly, it may have taken it years to recover.
It was just as dependent and David as David was on it.
All that "what will be I be without you, we've been together so long" stuff was coming out of David's mouth, but could have just as easily been the Shadow King talking.
It's used to jumping bodies so it will probably recover quickly, but it was still just freshly dumped out of the most powerful mutant on the planet and was suffering from whatever that hangover feels like.
It was pissed and did not expect to win. I think Oliver was an unexpected turn of events for it and it immediately took advantage of it by getting the hell out of Dodge and away from David.

Other observations. Syd is acting like someone who was emotionally abused finding someone who treats her with something resembling love. She has no idea how this works. She just knows "Holy, poo poo! I can touch this guy! I can have sex! Sex is awesome! Without this guy I can no longer touch anyone or have sex. This guy is everything to me no matter what." Like she's in her mid to late 20s and has never even held hands. Imagine the most repressed Christian you can imagine suddenly being thrust into a liberal college. You go hog wild. She'll get a handle on it and may start to feel bad for some of her decisions.

David is still sick. He's just so much batter than he was with the Shadow King out of his head. We have no idea the extents of his illness or his powers.

Almost every character on the show is written like a real person. They make dumb and rash decisions, they overlook things that are important because they can't be bothered, they get distracted. It's great. Everything, every stupid thing that happened, makes sense.

Oliver seems to be a technical genius? And a psychic? He built the tech at Summerland with Cary (or is it Kerry). I don't know. But I could listen to his sweet voice all day long.

I'm glad nobody else died. That would have been cliché. Maybe murder someone S2E1 just to spice things up.

I really like the new characterization of evil interrogator into dedicated family man with a loving husband (who also works for the evil government).

Also, the license plate on Oliver's car was British, right? Might it be set in the UK? I know, nobody had accents, but Oliver, but it is TV.

No idea what the Pokeball was, though. Wondered why, if they had tech that could contain David and his power, they didn't use it much earlier. I fully expect season 2 to provide a satisfying answer. And also continue to make me cry and question my own sanity.
