Two very long-running franchises, both with famously strong soundtracks. But which franchise has better music? Megaman, or Sonic? Megaman has hot bangers like Wily Castle, Cossack Stage 2, and X vs Zero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4VtxWRfPOk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br3uvu7_Tew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed9jkuczzRU But Sonic likewise has great stuff like Chemical Plant Zone, Green Hill Zone, and Rooftop Run. It's also got lots of, ah, "quality" songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBnsXy9mbVY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPRG1Fpp00U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTtUe7MhuCo So, where do you stand on this very important issue?

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of great music in the Mega Man series. But the Sonic series has hands down my favourite videogame music, and to prove it I'm dragging up a big ol' nerdy effortpost I made in the videogame music thread in NMD a while back: Mega Drive Star Light Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Masato Nakamura). Emerald Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Masato Nakamura). Mystic Cave Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Masato Nakamura). Really I could link the whole Sonic 2 soundtrack, it's just that drat good. Toxic Caves (Sonic Spinball, Howard Drossin) Angel Island Zone Act 2 (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Michael... Jackson...? Could be a whole bunch of people. Might even be Jun Senoue, since he elected to cover this for Smash Bros) Rusty Ruins Zone Act 1 (Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island/Sonic 3D Blast, Jun Senoue and Tatsuyuki Maeda). "Midnight Greenhouse" (Botanic Base) (Knuckles Chaotix, Junko Shiratsu and Mariko Nanba) Handheld Sonic games Bridge Zone (Sonic 1 MS/GG version, Yuzo Koshiro) Green Hills Zone (Sonic 2 MS/GG version, Naofumi Hataya) (note spelling) Secret Base Zone Act 1 (Sonic Advance, Tatsuyuki Maeda) Hot Crater Zone Act 2 (Sonic Advance 2, Tatsuyuki Maeda) What U Need (Dead Line Zone) (Sonic Rush, Hideki Naganuma) 3D, Jun Senoue era Azure Blue World... for Emerald Coast (Extended Soundtrack Version) (Sonic Adventure 1, Jun Senoue) Pleasure Castle... for Twinkle Park (Sonic Adventure 1, Jun Senoue) Rumbling Highway... for Mission Street (Sonic Adventure 2, Jun Senoue) Grand Metropolis (Sonic Heroes, Jun Senoue) 3D, Tomoya Ohtani era Soleanna New City (Sonic '06, Tomoya Ohtani) Rooftop Run Day (Sonic Unleashed, Tomoya Ohtani) Empire City Day (Sonic Unleashed, Tomoya Ohtani) Tropical Resort Act 1 (Sonic Colours, Tomoya Ohtani) Sweet Mountain Map (Sonic Colours, Tomoya Ohtani) Collection Room (Door Into Summer) (Sonic Generations, remixed by Jun Senoue from Knuckles Chaotix (Junko Shiratsu and Mariko Nanba)) Windy Hill - Full Version (Sonic Lost World, Tomoya Ohtani)

Sonic does have quite a lot of good music, but I still gotta side with Megaman on this. I never really enjoyed the vocal Sonic songs beyond kitschy appreciation. There's one or two good ones but the rest are...hokey at best. Also, the poll is in a dead heat as of this post. Megaman as a franchise has a lot of great stuff, though I am less knowledgeable on the Legends, Battle Network, etc franchises, so anyone with more familiarity would be appreciated. despite having a rather hosed soundfont in X3, it still had some great tunes, like Blizzard Buffalo, Gravity Beetle, Crush Crawfish, Doctor Doppler Lab 1 and Zero's Theme. X2's got a lot of good ones too. Overdrive Ostritch, Magna Centipede, and Flame Stag. Bubble Crab, Crystal Snail and Sigma Stage 1 are definitely the standouts from X2's OST though. Never played X8, but Jakob Orbital Elevator is fantastic.

This is going to sound like a pithy joke, but it's my genuine opinion that (in the old games where Sonic was good and Megaman was, uh, Megaman) Megaman's music is basically proto-chiptunes, which is terrible, since they just loop a few bars of vaguely musical bleeps and bloops and that's their tracks. Sonic has not only actual music but good, memorable music that gets you going. Granted the more recent Megaman games don't have this problem (depending on how you measure recent because jesus christ time) but I honestly haven't played any of the newer ones so it's hard for me to stick by them even if they are better, I still don't think they're as good as Sonic's good tracks. E: Also let's be real, we all know what the best soundtrack from that era is. And honorable mention. Orv fucked around with this message at 10:30 on Apr 9, 2017 |

It is! But the problem we run into there is that I don't like those melodic compositions, at all. I've never been a fan of that kind of backing track, even when it was kind of all there was because hardware limitations and so forth, and admittedly not having a ton of reverence for that whole era of consoles doesn't help, but what're you gonna do? Like bad music? Honestly the X series stuff is really good but I still prefer Sonic.

The difference being you're conflating your opinion as fact. Like I'm not saying you're not allowed to dislike Megaman music, even if I think that's crazy. But reducing it to "bleeps and bloops" when they are compositionally extremely sound a lot of the time, and can be easily transferred to other musical mediums without issue, is a bit disingenuous don't you think? Like, take Wily Stage 1. You can dislike the MIDI sounds all you like, and that's fine, but saying it's "just a few bits looped" is outright fabrication. Here it is in piano form, basically unchanged: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlLhHOGwExU and here's an adaptation with vocals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nnl0ycLvgU You're welcome to dislike the type of music, but please don't try to downplay the actual quality of the musical composition of them because they used the limited hardware available and you don't like them. Mostly I made this thread so people could be cool and post the music tracks they like rather than poo poo on the others, it was meant to be lighthearted rather than a heated fight.

If you like synth heavy rock music then Megaman X for sure. A lot of the earlier games in the X series had music that was just downright iconic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F2jf0NRl2Y If we're getting into remixes then Megaman X pretty much tops Sonic out when it comes to high tension action music. Many of the songs are literally just what happens if a person tried to make a rock song on the SNES's old sound system. The remake of the first X series game highlights this. Compare that song up above to this and you'll see what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNsVOdQmp-c Archonex fucked around with this message at 08:05 on Apr 11, 2017 |

So I'd like to gush incoherently about basslines for a bit, because I've spent far too much time thinking about video game basslines over the years. Masato Nakamura, the composer for the first two Sonic games, is a bassist and I really think it shows. I picked out Emerald Hill Zone and Mystic Cave Zone in that big list of links partially for their really fun and bouncy basslines that pretty much function as a second melody line, while also holding the whole thing together beautifully. Another good example is my all-time favourite game music track, Casino Night Zone - its walking bass is a lot more sedate, but still manages to be really inventive and goes ahead and does its own thing a lot of the time. I want to say "counterpoint" here, but I'm not entirely sure if that's accurate (the last time I had something approximating formal musical training was at school before I chose my GCSEs). Labyrinth Zone has another rising and falling bassline, this time matching the melody fairly closely, and at one point I noticed that it used almost the same notes as the stereotypical boogie woogie bassline, but going C E G A B A G E instead of C E G A Bb A G E. Which was a pretty cool thing, I thought. And even with his basslines that mostly stick to the same note, the bass is still doing a lot of important work to drive the tune forward and set the pace: Green Hill, Chemical Plant and Metropolis all provide good examples of this. I really like the sound of the Mega Drive's bass instruments (even if they are a little high-pitched for a bassline), and I think Masato Nakamura did a really good job of using them and setting the tone for a lot of the rest of the series. Howard Drossin also had some pretty rocking basslines in the games he composed for: Toxic Caves from Sonic Spinball and Flying Battery Act 1 from Sonic and Knuckles spring to mind. And Angel Island Act 2 (composed by... um... well, my hunch here is Jun Senoue to be honest, regardless of what input Michael Jackson had on the Sonic 3 soundtrack) is up there with Emerald Hill for my favourite Sonic basslines. It manages to explore quite a lot of space in a pretty short time. Speaking of Jun Senoue, let's move on to the 3D games. I feel he did a really good job of capturing the feel of the Emerald Hill bassline with Windy and Ripply, the music for the second half of Emerald Coast in Sonic Adventure. It has that same bouncy quality to it that really ties the whole thing together nicely. Another very active and energetic bassline features in Rumbling Highway, the music for Mission Street in SA2. Again, it's very much going off and doing its own thing, and feels very musically inventive. And for Tomoya Ohtani basslines, a great place to start would be Tropical Resort Act 1 - okay sure, it starts as a very stereotypical (but also incredibly fun) surfrock bassline, but once the synths kick in it manages to go off on its own magical adventure. For a different kind of prominent bassline, let's look at his Soleanna New City from Sonic '06. The steady, funky bassline underpins this very chill hub world number beautifully. I don't really have a good finish to this. There are probably a ton of other good basslines out there in Sonic, I just picked out a few here. Hell, there are probably a ton of great basslines in Mega Man too, I just haven't spent as much time listening to them (although I'm not a huge fan of the NES's triangle wave bass, if I'm honest). But they are a big part of why I like Sonic music so much.

I'm gonna give Sonic the edge. The Mega Man and X 1-3 have kick rear end amazing soundtracks. Some of the best in the medium. But once they get to the PS1 era, they become bland what has its. The other series Mega Man games just have white noise. Sonic's always had great soundtracks. Even at some of their lowest points, people usually say "at least the music is good." And you got Michael loving Jackson doing the Genesis games, the campy buttrock of the Adventure games, the now adorable because enough time has passed edginess of nu-metal with Shadow's themes, to the pretty cool electro swing of the more modern Sonics. Plus, Crush 40 is doing music for the upcoming theatrical Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Even if the movie is terrible, it'll be worth it for that.

The Grizzly Slash music in Mega Man X5 (one of my faves) was based on the soundtrack from the movie Speed. Specifically, the part where they have to jump over the gap in the overpass. Go watch the movie and then listen to the game music if you don't believe me. A vote for Sonic is a vote against Keanu Reeves.
