lol why did they even bother with the 101 gun?

Literally the same besides a lovely scope

They should've just introduced weapon warpaints, made the R-101 warpaint for the R-201, and added a scope to the 201's list of sights.

That or made the 101 stats different, just adding a reskin feels weak as hell.

Why would you ever use the charge beam when the MLG is baller as gently caress?

MLG is my anti-titan weapon of choice but when the opposing team outnumbers you in Titans, chipping away at Titans from a distance with an amped wall builds your Titan meter pretty fast. IMO the Titan weapons are less about destroying Titans and more as a tool to help get you back into a Titan. Although the nerfed charge hack is maybe nerfed a bit too far, almost not worth other than it still being good for long range hits on Titans.

New map rules. Not too sure about that big open field spot past the fence off to one side though. The whole thing feels a lot different from the TF1 version. I love that map then but I haven't played in forever so maybe it's the same?

I don't really like it, or most of the new maps.

I one think the pilot gameplay works well with lots of small buildings you can get in/on. I think it encourages camping more than simpler maps. Basically exoplanet/drydock/boomtown are better than Angel City/eden/colony.

Don't make them too simple though, otherwise you end up with homestead.

I guess it's to keep people from camping in the bushes but you can't really shoot out of there either so...I'm not sure why it's out of bounds. It would even be a fun cat/mouse area for a Titan and a pilot. Still the best map in the game though.

475 was probably the perfect number, last night's matches felt like they went on for a bit too long, especially when we are up to 425 and the other team is barely breaking 100. Although I like that the higher score cap allows for a second wave of Titan on Titan fights, when it was at 450 it felt like the match was over when it was just starting to heat up again.

450 was definitely too short, the match always felt like it ended too soon. 475 was okay, it did help encourage that second Titan wave. 500 felt great to me, even better chance at a second wave, and more room for a close game to turn around. There was definitely one sweaty match last night that we would have lost without those extra points. I do feel sorry for the teams we dunked on, but those last few points came pretty fast when the other team was that bad. We also happened to face a lot of lovely teams last night. RIP free weekenders.

It's possible I am biased though, my brain really prefers a nice clean multiple of 100.

It all comes out right in the end.
The more I play this game, the more I think that if I could change one thing, it'd be making the punch not a one-hit kill. I don't really get the rationale behind a pilot's fist being ten times more deadly than a bullet, unless they have Pacific Rim-esque rockets on their elbows. There really is no reason to execute people other than just to rub salt in the wound and unlock more executions.

Yeah I think most other shooters have ditched that mechanic even though it used to be the norm. Connections are too unreliable for it to feel fair. Especially TF2 feels even worse than COD or BF because it's so fast. And both of those games got rid of it. Agreed wholeheartedly that if I could change one thing about the game it would be that.

Melee from behind should remain instakill, and I'd like to see it so drop kills or sliding kills are the same since those are really fun (although a lot of sliding kills feel like bullshit). But that poo poo that always happens in a hallway where you actually start the animation and hear the sound effect, but die anyways or just see some guy rubber band at you...gently caress that. it's the singe worst thing about the game because it happens almost every match, often multiple times I feel. I'd like to see bare bones face to face melee just do a nice bit of damage or some mild disorientation or have it trigger some sort of grapple. The dead out of nowhere poo poo is just total garbage.

I think melee is fine, tho it was jarring to go from very lenient melee at launch to the very strict approach angle of the present build. Regardless, I think it's one of the most satisfying things in the game.

The debate rages on. Can a game like Titanfall 2 have mass appeal like Overwatch? gently caress overwatch

Frothy thinks that Respawn could learn a few lessons on how to manipulate their player-base, by dangling the carrot like other garbage-tier developers do. Hell, maybe he's right. But isn't there something a bit pathetic about saying "a good game isn't enough anymore."? Frothy's cool, but he's lost the thread here.

I've gotten the distinct impression, at each juncture, that Respawn isn't interested in the "games-as-a-service" development structure, and that they've been covertly quarreling with EA, using a AAA budget while developing their game for a medium-sized audience, fostering a skill-based community, and downplaying cosmetic 'baubles' in favor of meticulous balance patches (keeping in mind that they aren't a gigantic 5000-person studio like Blizzard). It really seems that Respawn has been struggling against the tide since the tech test last summer, that EA wanted a game with mass-appeal in terms of both gameplay (no bunnyhopping) and microtransactions, and that Respawn wanted to subvert that. If that's the case, good for them.

The problem with this attitude is the reality that games are expensive and if the game doesn't make money, it won't get published or developed anymore. Modern triple A development is too expensive for them to make back their budgets at 60 bucks a game, but they won't raise the price because then people won't buy it - they already won't buy it half the time at 60 bucks anymore. So they try to make their money back with microtransactions. So long as the economy is poo poo, the first thing people will stop buying is disposable entertainment like games or movies - and so long as that's true, those mediums will do more things to try and nickle and dime what people still do buy games.

I thought Frothy's video was pretty good and the basic thrust of his point is correct - there's so many new games and new options coming out, people really can't just be sustained off "this game is good." I don't know that Titanfall 2 needs microtransactions - no game needs microtransactions, but if they have to exist I'd rather they were like Overwatch's system than something like Call of Duty - but the game has to make sufficient money to keep getting made, and the only realistic way for them to do that is microtransactions. I don't think the game needs to be dumbed down - though to be perfectly honest I loving hate bunny hoping and wouldn't mind it going away - but games-as-a-service is the future of games so long as the current state of the industry continues.

"Using a AAA budget while developing their game for a medium-sized audience" is code for wasting a shitload of publisher money. I don't have a problem with that, but down that path lies Titanfall dying as a franchise. Honestly, I would still like to see ranked play, in the mold of Overwatch or League of Legends.

I really like Overwatch and think it has a generally good model though so clearly I have a completely different perspective. I'd rather TItanfall 2 adopted a similar model and continue to exist as a good game than go down the rabbit hole of supply drop bullshiterry of COD.

The economy is pretty good though. But I think the problem is video games are considered a hobby for lower and middle class. You know, the ones where wages haven't increased proportionally in the last 20 years or so.

I do see what they're trying to go to, it makes sense to have just one game and monetize it with a large audience. There's too many games competing for that though, we only have so much time and money to spend. I remember when cs (the original) used to be one of the few online games to play on pc. I literally only played that for a summer.

But these days, just in the last 12 months, overwatch, call of duty, Battlefield, titanfall, destiny rise of iron and a few more games I can't remember all compete and they all have monetizing systems.

Yeah, if we're talking about America, the economy nationwide is actually pretty solid and has been for a couple years now. It's places like the Midwest that never recovered from the Great Recession, due in no small part to China undercutting the steel industry so severely.

If you wanted to see wages keep up with inflation and reasonable raises, though? rip

They just need to raise the price of games. It's a tough pill to swallow and people will bitch and moan, but that is the real solution. For the amount of effort and the number of sheer developer man hours put into a game, along with marketing and whatnot, it's loving insane how little we pay to literally own the product in its entirety, a product that theoretically could provide tens, if not hundreds, of hours of entertainment.

This isn't necessarily just a matter of value, it's about markets and research. They probably focus test this poo poo constantly and see exactly how many sales they'll lose if they raised the price.

The moment they'd make more money off higher priced games the price will go up. That it hasn't yet means they don't think it would make more money for them.

Also yeah I was more talking about wage stagnation and a lack of real wage growth, in relation to how consumers value disposable income and entertainment. There's also just a lot more competition than there used to be, between other mediums, and free games/other platforms like Steam and indie games, etc.

Titanfall 2 is a good game and Respawn is a good developer, but if it doesn't make enough money EA will stop letting them make it. That isn't fair but that is the frank reality we live in. Whining about it won't make it go away.
