I've speculated along exactly those lines earlier. It fits what we know, makes sense, and I don't like it. It feels too weak to me. I don't see a motive for slaughtering everybody in there. That's why I went back to the red about what Beatrice has to gain.

The answer is clearly Roland. A piece to fight against witches and demons is a knight (continuing the chess metaphor) and one of the Twelve Paladins of Charlemagne is a fitting piece for Furudo Erika. I wonder if she's going to confine herself to those, or if someone like Inwaga is going to appear. It occurred to me that even if a male can be a witch, he presumably gets a male witch, so Beatrice would be coming from a female. (Things are complicated enough without trying to figure out everybody's gender identity, so I pretend that isn't a concern. Rosa may have been too young and doesn't want the one child she does have. If I've got the dates right, the "Beatrice" she met in the hidden mansion actually died a couple of years before Battler was born. Kumasawa? If she's over 70 now, she was over 50 then, which is biologically possible, but a very long shot. And we're told that she has a bunch of sons, so why make a fuss over one more? If not a son, perhaps some other connection? A sister? A lover, as much as you can be a lover at that age? No, I'm a idiot. If somebody is unhappy enough to create a witch, what they want is escape, or protection, or whatever it takes to drag them out of the hole they're stuck in. Then the sin is not being around for six years, six long and painful years for Beatrice. I don't know anybody who's in bad enough shape to kill over that, but Natsuhi and Rosa both seemed fairly normal before we got to know them better. If this is the theory, then it's Jessica or Shannon. Natsuhi and Rosa, for example, are unhappy, but they wouldn't be counting on Battler to fix that. Unfortunately, current facts get in the way of the theory. Shannon has George now; either that's entirely a fake or she doesn't need saving any more. Jessica I just can't see. That's a dangerous statement when every character has changed as we've learned more about them, but she doesn't seem desperate enough. I know I called Natsuhi the prime suspect in just my last post, but she's worried about supporting her husband and father in law (and they need a lot of support, what with one being dead and the other being incompetent). Arc 5 has been mostly from her point of view, and she never even thinks about Battler. I'm trying to figure out where we could attach Battler to the family tree that would cause such strong feelings. Maybe as an illegitimate child by Kinzo and Beatrice-his-lover (we have too many Beatrices around here). If Rosa was wrong and the girl in the mansion didn't die, but was still there, wishing she could seen her son... that's the sort of motivation I could see working. Too bad all our evidence runs against this. It's probably worth noting that Battler has been living with his "mother's" family, so whatever the secret is about his identity, they apparently don't know it. Or they're nice people looking after their adopted grandson; I'm just suspicious because actual nice people are so rare in this story.

The only ones to qualify for the second are, in my mind, the servants or maybe Kyrie. Those are the only people I can see being considered as "unacquainted" with Battler. I can't see it being Gohda. He's too unacquainted. I can't see it being Genji as the prime mover either. So four remain. Kyrie, Kumasawa, Shannon, and Kanon. Of those, Kanon is the most likely if the literal meaning is taken, and Shannon being slightly less likely by virtue of forcing the metaphorical definition. To some degree, I can't help but wonder if the sin being mentioned is the whole thing regarding how he told Shannon that he'd come back, and Kanon is simply the one carrying it out. If Kanon were BEATRICE, then it would neatly sidestep the red yet still qualify.

Wait. Now that I look at it... Dlanor is an anagram of a word, yes, but it's also just Ronald backwards. Was calling it an "anagram" technically true, but meant to mislead us? Because I'll admit, it got me, and I am desperately hoping I wasn't the only one who totally missed that. EDIT: If it's Knox's first name, it's definitely Ronald.

It seems to be, well, a cry for attention. And attention to the epitaph. Beatrice must want the epitaph solved, and is drawing attention to it with murders and saying "solve this or more people die." Which makes me think Beatrice is in the Golden Land, or wants Battler to visit the Golden Land. I really like the idea of Beatrice living in the hidden mansion, trying to get her son to come visit her. I may have said that myself, but that wasn't exactly the entire truth. What blue truth does is posit a truth. As long as it's not denied in red, it remains considered "the truth", no matter if it's small bombs or, well, what actually happened. As such, if you're not making an argument (e.g. by saying a trivial statement like "I believe in you"), it's not really valid blue because it doesn't... do anything. It's not a move. She felt no fatigue, no pain, no hesitation. Even if Beato's sharp wedges had aimed right for Dlanor's eyes, she wouldn't have shut them. No, it's doubtful that she ever even blinks in the first place... "B, Beatrice, hang in there..." "...I've heard the rumors, but we really do share the worst compatibility. To think that dreams, hopes and even future possibilities are forbidden. The pride of the gods is overwhelming. I'd expect no less from a witch hunt executioner. In other words, this was the last blue truth which could bury the contradiction of Kinzo existing in the study at 23:00 but not existing there later, after it had become a closed room.  With this theory, even if Kinzo didn't exist in this closed room of a study, he could 'exist' there...! If this wedge of Satan's were to be crushed, their chances of escaping this room would become hopelessly dim...!  "Gghhh, ack...!! B, Beatrice-sama...! Quickly... escape while you still can...!! Ggh, gyah..."Dlanor slowly grasped the final wedge, which still pierced her chest. Apparently, that vice-like grip was hurting Satan as though all the bones in her body were being broken. No locations would work against Dlanor by this point. Dlanor took Beato's final desperate onslaught head on, turning everything back with a far stronger power of denial! Beat them up! Knock them down with overwhelming force!! No longer does any place exist in this study for Kinzo to escape to...!! Beato was blown back like a leaf dancing in the wind, knocked around over and over again like an empty can lying on a road. By now, no matter how many times Beato used the blue truth, it wouldn't be able to defeat Dlanor's red truth... "Hahahahaha, ahhahahahahahahaha...!! Witches are so pathetic. You just try to talk your way out of things endlessly, trying to confuse the truth. Let me borrow Dlanor's words. I'm disappointed, Beatrice-san. *giggle*giggle* *giggle*giggle*!" "...guh, ggghh..."Erika coldly delivered these decisive words to Beato, who was crawling on the ground.  "Detective's authority. The detective has the right to inspect all crime scenes. Beato struggled to her feet... but that was the best she could do. She no longer had the energy to fight. She had taken all of the denying red head on from close range. It was all she could do to withstand a pain so strong it felt like she'd vomit up all her insides... Even Beato, who had aimed for the title of strongest and most evil witch all this time, couldn't do a thing against a witch hunter. No matter how sturdy a sandcastle you build on the beach, it can never win against the rising tide...   "Beatrice, I thank you. You've done so much for me despite your remaining grudge." "I guess it's true that your life flashes by when you see death coming. I've remembered how you once looked when you were young. You were annoyingly like Battler." "I now pass on everything, my soul and the qualifications of the head, to Battler. I no longer have any regrets...!" BGM: None  To Beato, it seemed as though Battler had met her gaze. There was no way he could have. This Battler was the piece Battler. There was no way he could see Beato in this higher-level world. However, his eyes really did meet hers. Even though they couldn't have, Beato was sure they did. As Erika, Eva and the others closed in on Natsuhi, questioning her over and over, only Battler stood apart from that tumult. His expression held none of the enthusiasm and excitement that the other humans had. It just piercingly and coldly surveyed the scene. And the expression on his face... was a quiet displeasure. Anger. He wasn't feeling compassion for Natsuhi because her lie was about to be exposed. However, he couldn't excuse Erika, who called herself an intellectual rapist and was simply enjoying cornering Natsuhi and those who sympathized with her. Then, he whispered softly.  BGM: Where Beato and the others definitely heard that... "You don't think... Battler might... turn things around from this weakened position...?" "...I probably could have done it, back in the day. And Battler can probably do it." "...Battler..." "Battler... If you are indeed the man who will inherit everything from me, now is the time to prove it...! Don't let the Legend of the Golden Witch end here...!" "Your lie has already been exposed, Natsuhi-san. We already know that you were alone in this room last night." "Isn't it about time to give up and confess? Culprits who are bad at giving up tend to go with bad mystery novels. Does anyone else feel like punching Dlanor in the face? I mean, she's a great character and all and an interesting addition to the story but she feels arrogant enough to deserve a punch in the face.
