Old SA was a weird, fun, and scary place and people were younger and there weren't many other games in town. So lots of high effort to be funny and subversive (often successfully) and a lot of stuff common to the internet under the umbrella that eventually got pushed out. There was porn, there were  there was the "TCC contact subforum" which was in effect just a way to find a drug dealer, etc. There were now-forbidden organized forum invasions, yearly goon meets, infamous goon camping trips. To this day, every subforum has its roots in just being a topic people were sick of so it got split off. Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse was not entirely ironically named, GBS hated anime that much and wanted people to be ashamed of posting there.

As an oldie, I did not post properly on SA for a loooong time because I was scared of the rules and not being funny enough to contribute. I loved it, even if it felt elite. I still love the place and it has changed and evolved with the times into what it is now. It is still a wonderful time sink and as informative as ever. I spend most of my time in the sub forums because they feel more like the old place. If anyone has Archives, I recommend going back to Games circa 2003 and seeing how different it is to now. In fact, each couple of years you can see the shifts in environment and culture. It's amazing that we have this stuff on hand and backed up.

I don't 100% remember how I found about SA and its forums but it was sometime in 2003, the first time I heard about this site was either because of that infamous thread about some guy who liked to sniff his sister's panties, or the P-P-P-Powerbook saga. The latter which had its own article in some website called Zug or something - I only remember its tagline possibly being "The world's only comedy website" and the admin having made a song against the RIAA.

i came for lp but then it turned out that i only liked jamesman, beef and beetus, chip and ironicus, and the astronauts so now i just post in normal games, and sometimes gbs, and once every couple years i'll make one post in adtrw asking "is --- good y/n"

eyyyyyy, my post got made into a thread title, woo! how are folks doing this fine morning, I have been stressed about politics the last few months like many have but lately it's been less stressful as the sheer incompetence of the GOP rears its ugly head, which has led to being less stressed in general and enjoying things more! Like video games!! There's a front page??? I lurked for about 2 years and finally got sick of seeing spider cock every 4 pages and registered an account and my life has honestly been enriched by the amusement and community of this place. Pretty amazing to think a goon was directly involved with one of the biggest political witch hunts in the past decade.

My hand got tired holding R2 constantly and Snake Pass made my first Steam refund. I don't mind driving games either but man that was some intense R2. Charming game though.

I lurked on GBS for at least four years before I ponied up money for an account. Old GBS was great. I'll never forget looking at Photoshop threads while sitting around a computer with my nerd friends in high school. One thread from 2004 in particular stands out. There was an anti landmine commercial in which there was a girls soccer game being played and one of them stepped on a mine that was buried in the field. People were screaming and crying and goons edited the poo poo out of that video. The creativity was astounding. Things like the Predator were were edited into the video and of course there were a dozen versions that played yakkity sax. Then there was another time an ex-girlfriend of mine asked my buddy to fix a picture of her riding her horse in which she blinked for the photo. We in turn made a PS thread with his account and it went all the way to PS Friday. Because we weren't complete monsters we showed her the thread and she thought it was great. Man I miss early to mid 2000s GBS and that article made me remember why.

It's low hanging fruit and not super original but I always fondly remember the game box and movie title photoshop fridays, my favorite always being an edit of Mega Man 2 that said "Always Jump Through Doors".

GBS pre-2008 or so was a pretty cool place that had a lot of fun and memorable threads. It went on a decline but stayed pretty good until the dark and gritty GBS reboot 3-4 years ago, and it's been mostly unreadable poo poo ever since. I don't even bother checking it anymore these days.
