Lol Libya wasn't a Russian client state what the gently caress are you smoking. Libya has been under Russia's sphere of influence since the late 60s. Just look at how Putin had a poo poo fit after the US killed Ghadaffi.

The Iran-US nuclear deal was also the US gaining influence in a place that has historically been close to Russia. Russia is where they buy their weapons.

There's that true story about some guy's dog diving into a hot spring and starts yelping because it's boiling under the surface, and one guy is going to go in to save the dog and everyone' like "No don't" and he's all "like hell I'm just going to sit here and watch that dog die" and dives in after him. Anyway, his last words after being dragged out by others, blinded and with third degree burns all over his body and his skin peeling off, were "that was really stupid...That was a stupid thing I did." The dog still died.

I feel this story reflects on the sorry state of US involvement in the middle east.

Here's a better analogy: it's like sticking your dick in a light socket. Sure it seems like a good idea at the time, but there are completely unforeseeable consequences later

And if you replace "dog" with "Hitler" then the man is a Nazi!

I'm trying to express more of a feeling of powerlessness to make any meaningful change and most likely causing more damage by intervening but the alternative is heartlessly standing by and just watching it happen. Military action leads to escalation and usually regime change, destabilizing the region, a vacuum of power, insurgency, and the cycle continues. Relief and aid can only stem the bleeding. So it goes.

It never has been. Qaddafi's foreign policy was eclectic. He dabbled in pan-Arabism, and pan-Africanism, but Libya was never a client state of the USSR, despite their healthy weapons trade. Putin didn't have a poo poo fit, he and his government expressed the same sort of Westphalian reservations and critiques they do whenever the West does something ridiculously hypocritical on the world stage. Here's what I pulled from Wikipedia:

Russia – Special envoy Mikhail Margelov warned that the war could continue in spite of Gaddafi's death.[53] Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the killing of Gaddafi violated the Geneva Conventions prohibiting summary execution of prisoners of war.[54] Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said "All the world saw him being killed, all bloodied. Is that democracy? And who did it? Drones, including American ones, delivered a strike on his motorcade. Then commandos, who were not supposed to be there, brought in so-called opposition and militants. And killed him without trial",[55] Igor Barinov, the vice-chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense stated that methods of dealing with Gaddafi and the subsequent reaction of western leaders reminds the darkest episodes of Middle Ages than contemporary operations of democracy development.

We have the same influence in Iran as we had before the deal- zero. If anything, they respect us less.

Those examples weren't cherry-picked, they were the major instances where our respective "national interests" (bearing in mind what I said earlier about US foreign policy) collided. Libya wasn't a Russian client state, and Qaddafi came in from the cold during the Bush administration right after we turbofucked Saddam. Obama and Hillary's misadventures in Libya eviscerated our influence in that country. The influence of Russia in Iran was increased by the nuclear deal (which amounted to 100% American surrender on all issues) because Russia is the nation supplying Iran with uranium for their "peaceful" energy program under that very deal, and now the Russians are selling the Iranians tons of weaponry. Afghanistan? loving what? The Taliban was a creature of Pakistan, not Russia, and Russia has loved our involvement there because they've been able to weaken us by supporting the Taliban, while simultaneously selling us airbase access and the like. Obama's foreign policy was a loving joke, and it's because he and his people had no conception of American interests while concurrently believing themselves smarter than everyone else in the world (who actually did have a conception of their national interests). Huge loving shocker, they got played for fools across the board, again and again, by everyone who bothered to try.

He was about to murder a city filled with his own people tho

The tanks were basically rolling when we struck.

The only crime in Libya was our piss poor effort as assisting the new government. Ten times more spent on airstrikes (which are themselves self indulgent toy war) than on rebuilding a functional country.

E: And no, Libya was not a functional country beforehand as evidenced by the fact people preferred armed revolt to living under a tinpot nobody.
