Yup like I said I think the biggest problem is the wage stagnation. It means games need to be viewed at a certain price point. I mean you know one of the biggest arguments is that game prices have not increased with inflation. Well they cant afford to because consumers wages have only barely increased with inflation and so everything else is taking that extra increase, and consumers still probably have the same amount of income for entertainment. Season passes and gold edition of games plus those $200 statue edition of games is how they make the extra money.

veni veni veni posted:I think the carrot on a stick stuff is fine as long as it isn't intrusive to the gameplay, which can be a fine line. Look back at when TLOU came out and people would literally sabotage the team because of the stupid meta game. If it's just getting fake money to unlock cosmetic stuff or something, whatever. I guess my point was that this hypothetical restraint with 'digital baubles' on Respawn's part does actually show in the game's design, and there isn't actually any indication that if TF2 sold twice as much we'd be getting treasure chests galore, or even near the amount of content that a studio like Blizzard is capable of sustaining under that model. Not that it's any bother to me, but Respawn didn't exactly ship a game that boasts a create-a-character feature, they tied your specific pilot's look to a character class. They seem to have intentionally downplayed the ceremony of Advocate Gifts. Even the mission select screen for single player seems like something pulled from 2001 when Halo was shiny and new. The gameplay itself hearkens back to PC shooters of another era when skill-based movement was in style (something that inherently culls your playerbase), and there are dozens of in-jokes and nods to seminal FPS games from decades past. Hell, even having a decent story mode in the first place seems quaint. Decisions like these don't seem based in hesitation, accident, or misunderstanding of audience potential, but in the developer sort of defying contemporary conventions in game design. Titanfall 2, from a development standpoint, has far more in common with shooters from 15 years ago than it does with Overwatch. And I like it for this reason. With that said, I wonder how Titanfall's total sales compare to Doom's, another revival of more classic gameplay/design.

I genuinely don't understand how people enjoy Overwatch, it's slow, feels floaty and disconnected, there's no sense of getting hit, your weapons might as well just be pretend... I played it a whole bunch on the free weekend they did but nothing grabbed me in it, a few of the levels were nice I guess but if the gameplay feels like babby's first FPS then I've got nothing that tickles my balls.

I bought Overwatch around the time it came out and played it for a couple days and regretted the purchase and haven't had any desire to touch it since. Mechanically it felt fine to me and the massive player base is nice but Blizzard's style and tone is just awful. It's a bad game, unlike Titanfall 2.

I really like this colony map. The open spaces are great for my Northstar and Legion, Scorch and Ronin can cut through the buildings with good cover for ambushes and flanking, and there's all sorts of crazy runs for pilots on foot. I keep getting shot from rooftops, but that's just encouragement to keep going fast.

I picked this up during the free weekend, and have played it a bunch since (already regenerated twice). But I'm still conflicted on a pretty large portion of the game: the titans themselves. When I'm fighting as a pilot vs another pilot, the game is absolutely amazing. Flying around the battlefield at breakneck speed with split-second shooting mechanics, simply awesome. But when I'm going against a titan, either as a pilot or inside a titan myself, it just feels underwhelming. As a pilot, either I get 6 or so shots off with an anti-titan weapon to bring it down (and will die from a single hit from their weapon), or I rodeo it to deal what feels like trivial amounts of damage, and likely die in the process. As a titan, it usually ends up feeling like a slug-fest; I hit them, they hit me, we go back and forth, until one of us explodes. Am I missing something about titans? What does pulling a battery from a titan even do (I know you can place it in a friendly titan to give them a shield, but what does it do to the enemy titan)? Is there some sort of titan-meta I'm not getting?
|

As a pilot, you should never be trying to one on one a titan unless you have no other choice because, as you've noticed, you'll usually die very quickly. Ideally you want to wait till they're occupied with a friendly titan or chasing other pilots around, then let loose on them. Even in that scenario, it's a good idea to take your shot and then move somewhere else for the next one. Rodeo actually does a decent chunk of damage to the enemy titan, but the main benefit is that it gives you a ton of meter toward your own titan. Pulling a battery out of an enemy titan and dropping it in a friendly one is by far the fastest way to get your own titan. As for using your own titan, it takes a bit to get the feel for it, and obviously they all play differently. Learning what the different titans can do and how to handle them when you encounter them on the other team is big. Also, you may be playing a big stompy robot, but with most of the titans, you should really be using cover, positioning, defensive abilities, and the dodge boost (if you have it) extensively to put the hurt on enemy titans while limiting the damage you take. Titan v Titan combat is much more tactical and methodical than the pilot game.

The Titan charge meter bonus from batteries is a huge deal. Rodeo is a pretty risky move, but using the Low Profile perk mitigates that risk (it delays their rodeo notification until you're almost done) especially combined with cloak (it hides your jump jet trails). It unlocks pretty late but can be purchased for credits and will thereafter be available permanently, even after you regen. The Thunderbolt is also great for building meter when fired toward a group of enemy Titans. As for Titan on Titan combat, if you're just slugging it out it sounds like you aren't using cover and your dashes effectively. Moving in and out of cover and dodging shots at just the right moment are key to minimizing damage on your Titan, and not taking damage is the key to kicking rear end. That's why Ion is so drat powerful, she can do major damage with a laser shot or two and be back behind cover before the opponent can react. Curve Tone missiles around and over cover by aiming away from your lock. Use the various shields at the right moments. Titan combat is more tactical but still fast and fun.

# ? Apr 6, 2017 20:26 |
|
Use Low Profile, Extra Battery, and Phase Embark. When you're at 70% of your titan meter find a titan to steal a battery from. Drop your titan when you get to safety with the battery. Boom, titan + shield. After your first battle in the titan duck away for a moment, pop out of titan, use your boost for Extra Battery and get back in your titan + new shield. Rinse. Repeat. Add Cloak to be an extra pain in the rear end, since enemy titans can't see you AT ALL.

Yea, stealing a battery takes a full bar of HP and then you have a battery to go in a friendly titan or your own for an even larger health swing. Unless it's someone who's good at Ronin and uses Phase Shift to avoid the battery damage, kills you and then puts the battery back in their own titan and gains hp.

Later this month we’ll have an F.N.N. where we will be revealing all the content coming with it, the trailer, and release date. Probably April 28th with the way the monthly drops have been going. also, to add to the rodeo discussion, pulling out a battery/dropping a grenade while the Titan is doomed is an instant kill and greatly builds your Titan Meter, giving you the Titan and pilot kill. I steal batteries every match, and yes, sometimes you get killed, but that doesn't defeat the purpose of trying (damage + meter). Eventually, after enough tries you'll be good enough at escaping that you'll enter a slightly higher skill tier automatically. And really, since they removed the 'stolen battery indicator' it's easier than ever to do. I don't even use low profile a lot of the time; just make sure the titan you're targeting has already used their electric smoke.

Also very helpful, steal the battery while the enemy Titan is engaged with a friendly Titan. And don't bother trying if there are other enemy Titans nearby. Also, if you're being rodeoed near friendly pilots, STAND STILL FOR FUCKS SAKE. I've lost count of the times I've tried to help a teammate get rid of an enemy pilot but they keep dodging all my helpful shots.

Go for titans that are distracted by your teammates and isolated so they can't get a friend to punch you off their back. If they pop smoke, back off and try again when the smoke is gone. Use cloak or phase shift or stim and get a height advantage/cover. Getting on the titan isn't hard, getting away with the battery is usually harder (easier now that they took the icon off, though).

Bridging off this, fake rodeoing then breaking off and running while they waste their smoke, then coming back around to jump on them again is SUPER effective. Also, the pilot response to a titan that crouches down inside electric smoke and stands still is to jump straight up and call your titan down on that very spot. 20% of the time you'll drop a loving titan on them because they haven't moved.

Ejecting with an enemy pilot on top your Titan will line up that pilot in your sights while that pilot is often turned around facing away from you. Rodeoing is usually too much of a risk that I usually don't go for it. 99% of the time I run the extra battery boost so I'll have that for my Titan or will give it out to a friendly Titan (but really I'm giving it away to build my Titan meter) runchild posted:Also very helpful, steal the battery while the enemy Titan is engaged with a friendly Titan. If there's a pilot on me I'll often immediately start spinning in one direction to line up the 180 degree punch when that pilot jumps off with the battery. For me it's just easier to already be in a rotating motion and just click the punch a second after I hear the pilot jumping off.

Also never rodeo from the front; the space to do so is relatively small in the front and there's a ground chance you'll just get punched into gibs.

This is a pretty good argument for warpfall actually. I've found that depending on when they pop their smoke you have enough time to pull the battery and get away still--you'll be at zero health for a second, but even if you don't get away you'll get a chunk of their titan armor.

I used to run Warpfall all the time, but there were so many scenarios where I would miscalculate the offensive drop and by the time I got into my titan it was at 1/3 health. Honestly, Warpfall isn't even much of a time saver versus Phase Embark. Phase Embark is such a good skill when used right and the titan boot screens are pretty much gone when you use it.
