The AI is almost as stubborn as me when it comes to bad ideas. Its a shame for them the Kiddo Butai is now in range. The Kido Butai is near Fiji – and finds their favourate prey, Battleships! And behind the Battleships, the heavily laden troop transports! We lose some of the straggling planes. More letters to send home. This guess of mine has saved thousands of Japanese lives. We murder more Kiwis. These guys are wiped out by attrition. Once again I get lucky and find a loaded troop transport and its battleship escort! No battleships, I must sort this.

"Uh, sir, the convoy has been wiped out. ...again." "Impossible!" "T-that's what you said the last time, sir." "Don't interrupt me! All right, line up another convoy. 20 AKs and 1 DD for escort, just like the last one. This time they're sure to get through."

I know it's easy to roll your eyes at the AI sometimes in these games, but I'd much prefer people giving theories as to how things like this could have happened in the real world. I know the USA has a massive industrial advantage, but what if the generals really were super venal or forced into bad decision-making by service rivalry or political pressure. It's almost disappointing that the historical American performance was so efficient, it would be nice to think about how a corrupt, hosed up American Command could botch their great material advantage.

The yellow press told them that Luganville was the key to the Pacific and a mass popular outcry forces them to keep attacking it. Now that they've lost like 15,000 troops doing so, the outcry has shifted to "We can't let all those marines drown for nothing" so they just keep going, but they keep rushing every invasion in an attempt to mollify the public.

7 April 1943 US destroyer Aaron Ward (this one), badly damaged by JNAF dive bombers and sank while under tow to Tulagi. Aaron Ward had narrowly survived the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal five months earlier.

A literal sunk-cost fallacy. Also, MacArthur is probably involved in some way (maybe he is in charge instead of Nimitz). He vowed "I shall return" to Luganville.

You may not have sunk any BB's but those two torps and a fire on the Washington is nothing to be scoffed at, it was one of the newest BB's of the war and sending it for repairs for a while isn't a bad outcome. Providing tomorrow doesn't finish her off anyway! Two South Dakota's on the loose could do some serious damage if they haven't turned back for repairs.

Wiki page for the USS Washington posted:Washington suffered no losses to hostile action during the entire course of the war, although she had some close calls: she was almost hit by "Long Lance" torpedoes off Guadalcanal, and was hit once by enemy ordnance, a 5-inch shell that passed through her radar antenna without detonation. Not anymore, ha ha ha ha ha

Not bad! That's a lot of mauled Allied troops.. And transports.. Think there's any chance of getting the BB's in the next few days and sweeping up their remaining forces in the area or they likely to have skedaddled?

Air-dropped torpedoes should send them heading straight towards a safe harbour, so they're probably continuing on their mission as planned.

It did, but Liberators were pretty well armed (10 50mm cannons), were designed so they could take a bunch of damage and keep flying, and were high altitude bombers, and the Zero wasn't as effective at high altitudes.

Clunk! Awww. Boom. We sight the burning battleships. We sink one, but the flak cruiser hammers us – and is a much more valuable target! We get to close to Fiji and they send a grab bag of fighters after us – to good effect. We bring down a load more fighters in Burma. Two liberators? It must be xmas! We lose more planes than I would like today. I think its worth it.

edit: actually, scratch that, I can't do math. Still, I'm pretty sure that the Americans have lost half of the battleships they get from both the South Dakota and North Carolina classes. Not counting those from the Iowa class that have yet to be seen, they are quickly running out of fast battleships. zetamind2000 fucked around with this message at 18:37 on Apr 8, 2017 |

I don't think the CLAA was a better target than the battleships - late war those things are absolutely devastating in shore bombardments and the fast battleships do a great job absorbing bombs for fleet CVs. The US get something like 14 fast battleships for the duration, including 4 Sodak, 4 NC, 4 Iowa, and Alaska/Guam CBs. What's the total battleship sunk tally now?
