My first reaction is that that is loving hilarious. My second reaction is to imagine being somebody who worked on Battleborn, and to have suffered all the indignities that it did, to top it all off with your own loving boss trying to shill the game by riding the coattails of Overwatch's porn community. Game development is a grueling job that's often fruitless and thankless and lacking in dignity, and at Gearbox you will never forget that.

DStecks posted:DNF is like the one thing you can't blame on Gearbox. I dunno, I think I'd still blame Gearbox for their approach to the situation. Everyone figured that they were going to grab the IP and quickly bang out a $20 throwback shooter using the existing assets to speed up development. Turns out they just polished the corners on the existing nightmare that was DNF's state at the time of acquisition and pushed it out the door. So the specific state of DNF can't be blamed on Gearbox, because they didn't actually make it that way, but we can absolutely blame Gearbox for going "lol, finished game for sale? Sure, we'll take that" and pushing it out the door. Still, though, part of me is glad they did? Duke Nukem Forever is this awful, but fascinating, interactive archeological dig through the sediment of a decade of shooter design fads.

I still really don't know why people compare(d) Battleborn to Overwatch, it was the most born out of nothing comparison I've seen in a while, outside of just "They both have colorful visuals and the shootbangs" pretty much.

They're both multiplayer only FPS games with diverse casts that take cues from MOBA games. Games like this live and die on having a dedicated player base, and being as similar as they are players are generally going to pick one or the other, not both. Being released so close to one another was probably the real nail in the coffin too, if Battleborn had been released months later I think people would have been open to a different flavor of MOBA Shooter and given it chance, but as it was most players looked at both games and decided to save their money for Overwatch.

They're not really the same game but they're very much the same style, and that's what matters for first impressions. If you're looking at 2 different games that seem very similar, but one is being lauded as one of the best games coming out and one is, at best, getting reviews that boil down to 'eh it's ok? Like, it does it's job reasonably ok?' you're gonna probably get one.

Battleborne might have had a chance (quality aside) if Overwatch hadn't just poo poo on their chances with a free test-drive weekend two weeks prior to its launch date.

There's also the fact that they dicked over Interceptor twice. The first time being when they collaberated with Gearbox with a fan recreation of DN3D in between Duke's right purchase and DNF's release.. The project's cancelation eventually lead Interceptor into being noticed by 3D Realms and making the Rise of the Triad reboot. The second time was a lawsuit between Gearbox and Interceptor over another Duke Nukem game that eventually became Bombshell.

The project's cancelation eventually lead Interceptor into being noticed by 3D Realms and making the Rise of the Triad reboot. Even beyond that, Gearbox has a laundry list of instances where they've screwed people over or pulled loathsome stuff. Prior to this, the big complaint was about how they pulled the Megaton Edition of Duke3D (along with most every other Duke game that was on Steam or GOG) and in it's stead, they put out the World Tour re-release, which despite having pretty good contributions from some of the original level designers, had content missing from the Megaton Edition (despite costing more), lacked mod support, and had poor audio. LGR, who is unabashed Duke Nukem fan, didn't think too highly of it. Before that, there was some controversy with the Android port of Duke3D (The "Hail to the King Collection"). I don't remember all of the details (if you ask over in the Early FPS thread, they might be able to give you a better outline), but Gearbox put the kibosh on the port, which greatly affected the developer. It looks like it got mostly ironed out, but it was still a real ordeal. I did a search, and there's a TechRaptor article detailing it, but like I said, someone in the Early FPS thread might remember more of the details. Moving away from Duke3D, one of things I don't see people bring up a lot is how Borderlands underwent a style change from it's initial reveal, and that it was ripped off from an animated short film called CodeHunters. There was also an article in PC Gamer a while back where Pitchford talked about doing sequels/follow-ups for Brothers In Arms and Duke Nukem Forever, in which he expresses the idea of outsourcing the work to another developer, which is the same thing that happened with Aliens:CM.

He's an rear end in a top hat for sure, but the people who are still actively orbiting him are the same people who hang out on kiwifarms. Also, he made some offshoot statements about the gator thing being stupid when it was relevant (broken clocks and all that) and that brought a lot of gators into the "community" based around making fun of him. I was part of it at this time but decided to bail around the same time when they started harassing a friend of mine for the horrendous crime of being a woman online.

A friend of mine linked some "Top 10 Cringy DSP Moments 2016" video a little while ago and I was struck at just how petty and indignant it was. Amongst actually embarrassing stuff (the bizarre Staycation he did with his gf and the jerking off on stream incident), most of the entries were really just Phil saying a dumb thing, yet the video and the comments were making them out to be THE WORST THING EVER SAID, especially when it was DSP saying he didn't like a certain game. The bizarre moralising and indiginity reminded me so much of how creepos on the CWCiki used to talk about Chris-Chan. Trying to justify their searing, obsessive hatred of someone really not worth the effort of bothering with under a guise of moral righteousness. It was almost like they were... signalling just how more... virtuous they were.
