So, what is the situation with the upgrade? I've got an employee laptop still on Windows 8, which is just terrible. Can I still just upgrade right to 10 with their key or do I need to turn some setting on or am I poo poo out of luck doing this free?

Well, this new Creators update did nothing to fix multimonitor fuckery with displayport/hdmi.. mostly windows and icons flying around when a monitor is in sleep or off mode. Its really annoying to say the least.

It's neither a Windows nor a video driver thing. The monitors are disabling their presence signal when they go to sleep. The video card thus sees it as if the monitor was unplugged and Windows correctly responds to this by relocating things that were on the now disconnected monitor. If the monitor that just told the system it wasn't there anymore was the only one remaining Windows reverts to a standard virtual desktop size which defaults to 1024x768 but IIRC can be changed with a registry key. In that case if you make it match your monitor's configuration you at least won't notice the problem. This is 100% a monitor problem and will not be solved in software. wolrah fucked around with this message at 19:54 on Apr 6, 2017 |

Displays going to sleep with such a defective cable cause windows to think the monitor has been unplugged. There are also some monitors that do not correctly provide status on pin 20, though those are rarer. For along time, Accell was the only brand that was doing it correctly for all their DP cables, though others may have caught up, so if you are using an older or generic displayport cable, it might be the problem.

Get Windows Blinds and just put all your icons in those? Then when the monitor comes back on things should be back where they should be at least. :/

I have only been able to replicate this when unplugging my monitor from the wall. Sleep or even the annoying Dell monitor "deep sleep" doesn't cause it. It really does seem like a monitor not behaving correctly.

I see it when I turn my monitors off. If I just lock it and let it go to sleep, everything is fine.

Are ytou sure it's the HDMI connected monitor which is having its windows/icons moved, not the DP one? That sounds like the monitor really isn't supplying sleep state info correctly, as HDMI cables don't normally do anything fancy. There is a way of modifying the registry to force the windows 'no monitor' monitor display resolution somewhat higher, but it requires a good bit of fiddling, so if you aren't comfortable with doing that, I won't post the instructions.

I have the Icon shuffle when I Uninstall/Reinstall drivers and move monitors around sometime, but the only time I get a lower res window resize issue is if I have something that throws up a fullscreen window that isn't the native res. (happened last night with Battlefield 1 on its first run in fact)

Displays going to sleep with such a defective cable cause windows to think the monitor has been unplugged. The monitor "disconnecting" issue is entirely on the monitor, and as noted it's usually only if you power off the device rather than just sleep mode. It's mostly a problem on DisplayPort, strangely the same monitors often get it right on HDMI/DVI if available. Usually when I've heard of it on HDMI it's when talking about a connection to a TV. Sometimes TVs will even stop asserting presence when you switch to a different input. redeyes posted:Do you think an active DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter might work to keep the sleep sense on?

You may want to try setting a "custom" scaling level at the scaling level you already use, doing that on laptops where shutting the lid resets the resolution fixes that issue for some reason. So perhaps it works for monitors falsely detected as being removed.

So this update has started jacking my file association for .pdf, which I have set to SumatraPDF, and giving it back to Edge. If I change it it puts it back the next day and even gives me a popup saying the association caused a problem and it's putting it back, which is about as endearing as a dog looking proud that it did a poo poo on the kitchen floor.

Check to make sure SumatraPDF is up to date. That usually fixes the issue. Oh, and change the default though windows default settings, not in the SumatraPDF app.

See I'm not quite on board with this explanation because: a. I had zero issues with this in win7, or for the first 3 months of win10. I've had my current DP + DVI 2 monitor setup since the end of 2015, got win10 in Jun of 2016, and got my nvidia 1060 in Sept 2016. Until that last one, the only thing that was different with the DP monitor was that I couldn't hard power-off it like I could with my old 2 DVI setup. b. For me, it doesn't happen every time the monitor sleeps. Maybe 1 in 10? If it was the monitor hardware, I'd expect that result much more consistently.

I kinda suspect drivers, because it's not like my monitors or cables changed.

I'm giving Windows Sonic for Headphones a try, and there's one thing I immediately like: It only turns on for audio streams with more than two channels. You would think this would be a pretty simple concept: don't do virtual surround sound if the source is in stereo. Every solution I've tried prior to this has forced it on at all times, which makes stereo sound like garbage.

This is kind of weird question, but does anyone know what happened to typing into windows start to use the search function? I'm way too used to hitting the windows key and typing in "Snipping Tool" "Firewall" "Updates" to quickly get around some programs and today it's just completely gone. I hit windows key and type and nothing happens. I see now there's buttons on the top left to switch from pinned apps to "All Apps" but the ability to use the search is gone.

Yeah I had that happen and restarting Explorer didn't help, had to reboot The start menu delay is probably the one thing that really bothers me about Windows 10 now. Not so much the delay as the fact it drops keypresses so your search ends up being 'rol panel' or whatever. Is there any way to make that more responsive, short of installing another tool to replace it?

Boy, the Creators update really did a number on my display, first with the screen failing to display at all, then turning into a kaleidoscope of digital static, then only refreshing the screen in games when they weren't in focus, and now it seems to have settled down to normality apart from a couple of games suddenly having some horrendous screen tearing. I may have to reinstall my graphics driver, see if that fixes it. I thought something was going to be off when the welcome screen at the end of the update process was offset by a hundred pixels and spilling onto my second monitor, and I wasn't wrong.
