Season stream is cancelled for this season. My internet issues won't be fixed until Thursday and I don't really care to reschedule the first stream or rush to get the second stream prepped Friday night.

Come Summer I'll put up another poll and hopefully that one goes off without a hitch.

Really enjoying Alice & Zoroku so far. Probably off to the strongest start of anything I've picked up this season.

As the resident Shinkai-hater, here are my fresh impressions of Your Name:

Structurally and visually, this movie is spectacular and definitely his best work. 5cm/s is still far and away his best work visually, but this still has some great visuals. The other reason this movie is because the ending is FINALLY not a rehash of the Voices of a Distant star ending. I was so happy about that, especially since there was a scene towards the end that felt like it was directly referencing the 5cm/s ending.

But this is still a Shinkai work, and it still, for me, falls in some of the same pits. In everything he does, the setting and the mechanics of his stories are specifically contrived to create maximum melodrama. And so, as usual, melodrama becomes the purpose, rather than an element, of the story. Its the same case here. He also reuses the same themes of listlessness and longing the all of his other works do, and presents it in similar ways. The only reason I think this is his best work is because its the best iteration of those themes.

So yeah, I liked it in the end, but I still hate Shinkai as a storyteller.

Edit: I just wanna add a bit more b/c I feel like I mainly harped on the "Sinkai-ness" of the movie.

Firstly, it was a really fun movie, overall. It has lots of cute and funny moments and the supporting characters are all fun foils for the two MCs to bounce off of when body-swapped.

Secondly, its not that I hate melodrama. I keep Angel Beats as one of my all time favorites, and that's chock full of melodrama. The difference between Maeda and Shinkai for me is that Maeda's melodrama feels earned. The melodrama come from the saturated emotional weight of his stories. But in Shinkai's work, the story feels engineered for melodrama, rather than being a symptom of the story. Im not sure how to articulate the difference better than that.

Judging by the OP/ED, it doesn't look like it's going to the more weird and borderline H parts of it (it's been a while since I've read the beginning though). At the most, I think it'll go down like a fairly standard Shonen Battle series rather than what the manga is (the same thing but with more porn).

Eromanga-sensei seems okay too. Nothing too outrageous too judging from comments from 4chan. If you liked Oreimo, it seems like it might be more of the same (which makes sense for obvious reasons).

Same and I really like how they portrayed the fact that Sana grew up in a laboratory enviroment with the staircase. It's such a small thing what happens there but it was just so :kimchi:.

New Eccentric Family is good and tanukimum is still very cute and the Tsuchinoko Expedition Squad (both new and old) is adorable

Benten's exit was ridiculous :3:

Tonight, I watched Your Name (fantastic) and the first eps of new Bahamut (good, fun), Re:Creators (promising, funny post-credits scene), KADO (boring, all setup, dropped), and... I thought there was something else, but I guess not. Anyways, watching things in that order was a bit disappointing, we would have reversed it had we known.

In other news, I get a bad vibe from "Clockwork Planet". Finger scene aside, it sort of reminds me of "Big Order" for some reason, and that makes me cautious.

I tried getting into the manga at one point and ended up dropping it when the MC started on his quest to gather the robot girl's little sister to begin assembling his harem.

From skimming the raw of the first episode it, looks like ID-0 is going to be about teleoperated robots mining space crystals, and some sort of corp vs space punks conflict.

Amazon was much faster in putting out Zero Mahou compared to Bahamut, just an hour delay from the original broadcast. Hope it keeps up that speed.

Zero Mahou itself is a fine adaptation, it cuts out a lot of the exposition and gets going much faster than the LN. Not sure if that would make the mechanism of the world more confusing but a quicker pace is fine. Maybe a little is lost without full access to the MCs irreverent thoughts. Also, this being animation there's a more constant reminder that yes, this is a furry guy.

Dropped the Laughing Salesman after first half of episode 2.

Hinako Notebook is cute. I like the varied outfits. The only concern I have is the MC's "gimmick" of freezing up, I just hope it doesn't get overused.

Sakurada Reset certainly has dull direction yes. Most of the episode was just talking heads in irrelevant situations. The set-up has potential so I'll try to watch at least the first arc out.
(Also why is the official English title "Sagrada"? Nothing about it seems to be sacred/divine, nor does it have any relation to that peculiar church in Barcelona.)

Three of this seasons Amazon acquisitions finally turned up on the UK site, but their layout is still abysmal and they can't even be trusted to list all the anime they have in the anime section. But there's a bunch of western crap in there to make up for it! :effort:

when creators do this thing it always kinda ticks me off. it's one thing to say that you didn't personally feel satisfied with what you accomplished with the work but this kind of thing is basically just insulting everyone who found meaning in your work and crying 'oh, what will i do with my five billion yen.'

The local theater airing Your Name in Philly is doing it for just a week apparently :(

On the plus side, I'm going to see it tomorrow with a friend! I managed to avoid seeing the online rip when it was first released so I'm super excited.

My local theater is showing it this week but only a single show each night for the sub but 3-4 of the dub. Those single sub shows are also mostly sold out except for the crummy front row seats that make it real hard to follow the whole screen when you also have to read the subtitles. I hope it works out well enough, I was really looking forward to this but didn't think it'd fill up this bad.

When this place ran The Boy and the Beast last year that got pretty equal coverage, maybe the subbed ones just sold like poo poo.
