Yeah, but he was traded to have a shot at the playoffs.

He had 6 goals in 19 games, if The rumors of him going to the oilers came true, he would have been 6th on the oilers with those numbers. 8th with his 9 points.

Botterill has been the GM of the WBS Pens, and they managed to win the the Eastern Confernce, and still have a chance to finish #1 overall, so he's not doing so bad. (Especially since the team has been in Pittsburgh for most of the year.)

Fire Benning. Hire Lombardi to a decade-long contract. Wait for Benning to get re-hired. Make Twitter post via official Canucks account to Benning's new team about how that's 10 years of our GM being better than yours.

Miss the playoffs anyway.

e: Maybe Sutter caused them to have the worst shooting percentage in the league this year?

Actually, if you look, LA has maintained a remarkably consistently terrible shooting % during his tenure, so there's an argument to be made that his system, which suppresses his team's offense generally, also suppresses shooting %ages.

Edit: ah, I see now D C pretty much beat me to this. Tbb, this is basically the same system and effects thereof that Sutter ran in SJ, and which worked well to elevate a mediocre team, but tended to depress good teams. I largely agree with the analysis someone wrote up recently on the Kings getting hot and/or lucky enough at the right time en route to their two Cup wins. Deano has also made some dumbass moves (the Doughty holdout, eg). I don't think LA is going to be hurting as a result of the firings. And you can expect Doughty's production to balloon next season.

my impression was that the talent on the kings roster has been declining every year. maybe sutter's system isn't the most exciting, but it seems pretty effective. he just doesn't have the caliber roster to execute the system as he had a couple years ago.

there's something to be said for needing to adapt your system to the roster you have, but imo lombardi's moves and long-rear end contract signings have seemed like the bigger problem for the kings than sutter's system. if i was an owner looking to shake up my front office, i'd be calling sutter way before i'd call lombardi

That and every year since he's been their coach, it produces good fancy stats numbers but doesnt translate to actual goals. His system doesnt work anymore and he wont adapt.

It's too careful, and its good the forwards are coached into defense first, but when they get behind they wont open the game up, they have enough offensive talent to risk it but never did.

I agree with firing of Sutter, I wanted that to happen last season, I'm not happy Lombardi is gone but I bet it was a "if you fire him I go too" sort of situation.

What I dont agree with is setting Blake as the GM, not enough experience in the front office.

Yeah. I saw that Dellow has a theory about that in this thread:

The kings will be fine as long as they don't have 16 million tied up in no trade clause contracts for kopitar and brown until 2022 (I take a big drink of coffee and hold it in my mouth while opening capgeek.com)

They're probably stuck with Gaborik forever too and they have $1 million in dead cap space from Mike Richards. Kopitar will probably be better but that's still a hilarious amount of wasted cap space.

They already have $45M committed to the cap three years from now. I guess that's a small price to pay for two cups, but that's still great.

Lombardi lost track of what he was good at: drafting and hiring good people. As soon as he started trading high draft picks for short term players that don't have a huge impact, he lost it. Sutter depressed the team's offense and was unable to prevent the team from taking too many penalties. The Kings are the best team in the league at 3 on 3 since its introduction, the team can play up tempo and has offense. Anyway, it all depends on Rob Blake now, who is a complete unknown in the GM position. He managed the Ontario Reign well though!

Ron Hextall was assistant GM previously in LA and he's done well as a full bore GM now so there's something to go on.

I originally thought Blake had been hired purely because he was a star for the Kings, the fact that he has actual experience is a good thing for the Kings. He might still suck, but maybe he can sucker somebody into taking Brown off their hands.

Part of me wonders if Lombardi was fired as soon as upper management saw his protected player list for the expansion draft and the players he's super "loyal" to were on it.

I mean, they already had justification to be rid of him, but the fact that he might have protected Brown and Martinez could have well been the nail in the coffin. Unless either side publicly talks about it, we can only assume.

Was Lombardi in charge during the Voynov situation?

No, they did a thoroughly exhaustive search of all GM candidates and found that Rob Blake just happened to be the best candidate possible. Just like Garth Snow just happened to be the best option for the Islanders, Sakic for the Avalanche, Francis for the Hurricanes, Hextall for the Flyers, etc.

Also all of the above teams are really good at hockey.
