I spoke to our agency and liaised with the embassy so hopefully should be fixed tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Trying to get info from the Vietnamese immigration services was like getting blood from a stone.

We went to the killing fields and the national museum this morning and loved(?) it. Super imformative and sobering day. Thanks for the food suggestions as well because the local BBQ was awesome.

My one additon, if you're still there, is to wake up early (or head home real late) and sit down to some pork and rice (bai sach chrouk) on a streetcorner. They close up shop by like 8 AM or earlier, but it's so worth trying.
Yes! Also, the morning fried egg noodles and pork is solid. Love that stuff. Agree completely, do street markets in the morning for sure.

Oh, I completely forgot, if you like Mexican food, they now have a restaurant rivaling La Monita - Mexicano. It's over in BKK1 I think. Unbelievably good chips and salsa and guacamole and tacos and enchiladas and... everything. Owner is apparently a douche with a nightmare girlfriend, but his brother pretty much runs the place and cooks and they're Mexican. It is fanTASTIC.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

Eat as much as possible, particularly nyonyua cuisine. Check out the street art as well, it's really cool and well done.

Yeah just eat all the street food, they are all amazing. If you go online and search for hawker food recommendations pay attention to those created by locals, and any place that has a queue would usually be good.

Avoid food courts especially one called "Red garden" something, it's an odd tourist trap and the food is poo poo.

You can rent bikes, get a map and ride around to look at the street art and go to the tiny port. Then in the evening take a drive to the beaches at Batu Ferringi where the night life is.

On the safe side go for USD 50 per day (not counting accommodation) in case of alcohol or uber / taxi, but even then it's over compensating

There's a good museum in PP that's just full of ancient Brahmic statues. Not sure the name of it but it was pretty cool and relatively cheap to get into. The Genocide Museum is also worth seeing if you want to have a somber day.

Dusit district or like the Dusit Thani hotel? I'm assuming district, but it's historically rare for tourists to stay there it why I ask, heh.

If it's the district, Phra Nakhon is the next district heading South toward Khao San Road. If you go toward the river and get on the road paralleling the river closest to it - Pracha Rat I think - just after you cross into Phra Nakhon, under the big expressway bridge, you'll see street signs titled Sam Sen Soi #. Between Sam Sen Soi 2-6 is a new backpacker district that's more like the relaxed KSR that existed sometime before I got here for the first time, heh. It's not amazing over there, but they do have some very interesting and/or cute places. Look for Chillax Hotel on Google Maps. Cinema Winehouse is over there, Wunderbar is cute and has good food (Western specifically), Snack Bar serves Canadian food of all things and has some of the only poutine in Bangkok, though when I sent a photo to my Canadian friends on FB they passed it around and made fun of it, so probably not good. There's a khlongside bar that's on the right as you approach Chillax, nice place to sit and have a beer.

If you continue and turn right onto Phra Athit toward the old fort and Thammasat, there are a shitload of high end Thai university bars with everything from loud (Thai) pub rock to jazz to sitting idly and drinking and so on.

If you want anything more like a fancy night going out on the town, head to Thong Lo and Ekkamai.

EDIT: I'm in the provinces and I'm starting to give directions like folks here, heh. Sorry. Go to the market, take a left, look for the old lady selling mango, it's not fresh, anyway, ignore her and then look for the kanom chin restaurant on the right and after that you'll see a small road next to Wat Fai Luang and you want to turn in that road and you'll know it's the right one if you see the old auntie on the chair outside a pink house be....

Thanks for the info, yeah I'm staying at Uma Residence which appears to be on the outskirts of the Dusit district. Just doing a night in Bangkok between flights and it had really good reviews. Like you said a bunch of cool hipster bars popped up on my searches, Sky Train Jazz Bar looked kinda cool. Would I be welcome in some of those more local hipster type spots?

Oh yeah, sure. I'm not sure exactly how the hipster bars in the West are, but here they're mostly insanely wealthy Thai kids dressed in what they unironically call "Gatsbeee" style and no one will care, but the service is usually awful because the owners are also rich and/or artsy kids who have a bar to play with their friends. Skytrain Jazz Bar is actually a very cool environment, it's between work and home for me and I've been twice now, but the service is lol awful and it gets pretty packed at night (my second visit didn't last long). If you don't mind a crowded, loud bar with bad service, interesting decor and a great view it could be a good option.

Not far away is the hiptser (GATSBEEEEEE) mecca of Ari, which is mostly restaurants where the same people plus some young professionals eat and then drink until late at very twee restaurants. I was almost hit once by a twee GATSBEE twat driving a quarter scale replica Mercedes or something. It's that twee. You're also not ridiculously far from Silom, you might look up Wong's and Smalls - or if you're up for it and around tomorrow, huge cultural event, the last day Cheap Charlie's will be open in its location. I can't claim to ever even have liked it, but like every expat here I've been many times and it is a landmark, heh.

EDIT: Oh you mentioned Jazz, I completely forgot that Brown Sugar has relocated over by Phra Athit. It also has horrible service, but at least traditionally was the best jazz/blues bar in town (Saxophone is poo poo, IMO, though it does have talented musicians sometimes - but it's right by Skytrain Jazz Bar, so maybe give it a go and then see a hearing specialist tomorrow).

We always stay at Uma when we have to spend a night in Bangkok. Awesome little hotel for the price.

Can't really help with the nightlife stuff though because we always have a kiddo in tow.

I haven't been there in 14 years, but it was set to be a tourist zone with a dirty beach then, so I'm not surprised.. Enjoyed it, though. Can you still spot the Russian era brutalist dachas a bit out of town as you head North or South? Those were fascinating to me. Like, hey, you can build anything, it's a tropical paradise, you don't have to build square concrete flats with rusty swingsets.

On a separate note, if anyone is planning on going to Kan(chanaburi) I am full of good advice at the moment.

I'm getting a lot of conflicting information on Song Kran in BKK.

Some people say the celebrations aren't going to be much. Others say same as usual. I read a report in the nation that said KSR and Silom have both been closed to traffic for the festivities.

Is it going to be just show up and see what is happening?

It was 90 here last week when I was in Osaka. Now I am here and it is forecast to be 95 which is doable. 95? Naw says mr sun, try some 103 on for size. Still better than the 105 last year.

That ended up being a really wonderful experience again. And my friend for whom we have come to celebrate his birthday said the exact same thing I said last year: I'm coming again next year.

Song Kran is such a great thing. I think my favorite part is seeing the little kids being so happy to be able to squirt water at the adults. They all seem absolutely tickled by it.

Happy New Year, y'all.
