It wasn't a joke, I support trans people in sports 100% but men don't belong on women's teams.

Well, they can just can hitch along with Nill next offseason or so.

They could try to repair the D corps with a few signings, but the picking are slim outside of shatty and Alzner, and either one would be expensive and loooong. I'm sure Nill is still fine with the worst goaltending in the league, so nothing matters there loving whatever. Team should be healthy next year, so should be a playoff threat again. Another year to spin the wheels and waste more Seguin/Benn prime. Hooray!

The NWHL specifically has rules allowing transgender players.

quote:

Eligibility Guidelines

Considering the most up-to-date medical and expert information available at the time of the implementation of this policy, participation is open to:

1. People designated female at birth, regardless of their gender identity.

1.1 The athlete may not take testosterone hormone therapy. Athletes transitioning to male who undergo hormone therapy will be ineligible to compete.

2. Those who transition from male to female are eligible to compete under the following conditions:

2.1. The athlete has declared that her gender identity is female. The declaration cannot be changed, for sporting purposes, for a minimum of four years.

2.2. The athlete must demonstrate that her total testosterone level in serum is within typical limits of women athletes.

2.3. The athlete's total testosterone level in serum must remain in the typical range of women athletes throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category.

2.4. Compliance with these conditions may be monitored by testing. In the event of non-compliance, the athlete’s eligibility in the league will be suspended for 12 months.

Yeah their transgender policy is terrible. With that logic there's no reason to ban men who simply have low testosterone either.

My curiosity is more about what happens if they start taking hormone supplements (and it doesn't run afoul of league doping policy). If they bulk up, could a transgender professional hockey player physically compete in the NHL?

I don't see why not, there have been plenty of under-sized players that have done well in the NHL.

Plenty of the women on the US/Canadian team are definitely already big enough to not even really be considered "under-sized" too. Hilary Knight, for example, is like 5'11 and probably around 170lbs. She's has the frame to play in the NHL she's just not fast enough to play with the men. I dunno if hormone supplements fix that.

I think the harder thing to overcome would be a lifetime of playing no-contact hockey and then suddenly switching. That would affect almost every aspect of the way you play your game, I'd think.

It's not a testosterone policy, it doesn't have to cover every possible testosterone situation.

So what's the point of calling it the national women's hockey league unless the implication is that trans men aren't really men?

DOOMocrat

In soccer, the USA women's team will lose to U18 boys teams at training camp and the only sport I know of with a bigger gap from the top tier to everyone else is probably hockey.

Testosterone & safety aren't the issues as much as performance. If the mold-breaker player comes along, let her in. If you can play etc etc. I just don't think it's likely, even at goaltender.

I have no idea and am not qualified at all to speak to anything about transwomen playing in women's leagues.

Yeah but there are so many men playing hockey since childhood that we are actually probably seeing the best players in the world whereas in women's sports how many young women stopped playing sports as a kid because they didn't see a future in it professionally.
