the BC Greens are going in the opposite direction apparently:

quote:

Weaver would double the foreign buyers tax on real estate from the current 15 per to 30 per cent provincewide. He asserted that the proposed tax is “not biased against any country, it ensures that people who live in British Columbia and work in British Columbia are able to afford to live here.

The Green party platform also supports a sliding property transfer tax (PPT) from zero per cent on the first $200,000 of a property’s value to 12 per cent on a property over $3 million.

Currently, the PPT is one per cent on the first $200,000, increasing to a high of three per cent at $2 million.

The Green party would also tax lifetime capital gains in excess of $750,000 on principal residences.

It would also transition the homeowner grant to a system of income-based grants in 2019. In January 2017, the government announced it was increasing the homeowner grant threshold from $1.2 million to $1.6 million.

The party also supports a progressive property tax system that imposes a surtax on property value and allows homeowners to credit rental income and their previous year’s B.C. income tax against the surtax.

For the low price of $200 million a year you too can save everyone in the province $30 a month on their rent.

I just like it when waitstaff or bartenders are good at their job, frankly. As long as they don't look contagious, I don't give a gently caress what they look like, or what gender they are.

Ooh that's a good strategy for getting rid of people who are in the bar reading books. I do think there's always a risk you agree with him but maybe he could pivot left in that case.

So houses are really expensive. My girlfriends parents stopped pressuring us to buy a house. Now they're giving us money to invest in the American stock market just in case the Chinese and Canadian housing markets collapse and total both economies.

Apparently China tried building a whole bunch of suburbs around Beijing to lower prices there, but they just ended up getting scooped up by speculators and still being out of reach for any normal people. And worse, in China you only get to own a place for 70 years before ownership reverts back to the government. So the fact that they now think that the Canadian housing market is still a bad investment even when you can keep your house forever shows how overheated this market is.

The BC NDP has released their election platform. What's the NDP's plan to make housing more affordable?

(the good kind though I guess maybe)

quote:

Building homes:

Building 114,000 affordable rental, non-profit and co-op housing units through partnerships over 10 years, building on public land where available. As much as possible, we will build with innovative BC-manufactured wood products, creating new markets for BC wood products and new jobs in BC’s forest industry-based communities.

Protecting renters:

- Providing a new renter’s rebate of $400 dollars per rental household per year.
- Closing the BC Liberals’ “fixed term lease” loophole and ensure controls on rent increases are enforced.
- Passing legislation requiring fair treatment during renovations and demolitions of rental properties.

Taxing speculators:

- Closing loopholes that let speculators dodge taxes and hide their identities, and charging a yearly 2% absentee speculators’ tax to crack down on empty homes.
- Directing revenue from the absentee speculators’ tax into a Housing Affordability Fund.
- Establishing a multi-agency task force to fight tax fraud and money laundering in the BC real estate marketplace.

Serious though it's actually pretty dope your gf's parents are tossing you cash to invest.

Both my and my partner's family are decently well off, and I'm fairly certain they would gift/loan us a substantial chunk if we wanted to buy a property beyond our current means. Everybody's doin' it. Especially if we got her knocked up first. Gotta think of the grandbabies you know? Can't grow up in an.... apartment building. *shudder*

But if I were to ask for a chunk of cash to invest, they would probably look at me like I'm insane. Shame because a down payment sized chunk put away and invested for the next 30+ years would go a hell of a long way towards securing our own retirement, university for any kids and taking care of them during their sunset years. I'm likely going to be funding their later years to one degree or another anyway (no dad you really don't need to buy a bigger boat), be nice to let it grow usefully in the meantime.
