So I help low-income students complete their applications for financial aid, and it's a super loving annoying process. One of the few things that makes the process easier is this thing called the Data Retrieval Tool, which allows people to directly import their information from the IRS into their FAFSA. Without it, schools often crawl up students' asses looking for documentation to confirm that the information provided on the FAFSA is correct, and for a lot of the people I work with, that documentation is hard to acquire and submit, for a variety of reasons. Now the Department of Education has convinced the IRS to take down the Data Retrieval Tool indefinitely due to concerns about "identity theft," despite no evidence that this was a problem, and is loving over thousands of students for no reason in the process. Cool times.

In my experience, if you're a fully Pell eligible student, odds are the schools will follow up with you requesting further documentation from the IRS unless you can use that tool, and I have students who are estranged from their parents or dealing with other things that create multiple additional hoops that they will have to jump through in order to receive financial aid now, and all for the financial aid equivalent of "mass voter fraud"

Charter schools do all kinds of poo poo to artificially inflate their grades. A charter school in northern Michigan lets students retake classes they failed online and then substitutes the online grade for the failing grade. It's bullshit but they get away with it.
