We've got a 25 year exemption requirement here in the US meaning that Skyline is federally illegal. The flip side of that is that it is super rare being a 'new' Skyline so the guy thinks he can charge a premium for it. Just because he has a Florida title doesn't make the car legal in the Fed's eyes and they're the ones that go around and crush Land Rovers that aren't legal.

There is a ton of pent-up market demand for the Skylines we never got from all the kids who are now adults that played Gran Turismo. Since there are so many people in the US it drives prices skyward because there is always someone that is going to pay whatever you are asking.

I know the local importer here in florida claims to be able to make it so its a full legal title, with no restrictions on driving mileage or limiting it to non public roads. Then again, when I tried to ask detailed questions about how they got around emissions and safety requirements to register the vehicles, they got kinda cagey. Makes me sad, because they have a running 20B Cosmos that they drive to shows regularly.

Edit: Here is their listing for almost the exact same loving car, only 20k less. And by almost the same, I mean the spoiler, lug nuts, shift knob, battery and radio are the only visual differences. http://blackopsperformance.com/listings/1998-nissan-skyline-r34-gtt/

Lmao these loving guys. "Whats the difference between state and federally legal????" playing it like somehow it being legal in Florida makes it ok. Feds can still come around and crush your poo poo.
The cars they bring in will NEVER be federally legal, they can not enter the country until the build month + 25 years. Their cars will always have that stuck on them, they will always be rolling contraband and liable to get seized forever.

There is the show and display law, but the car has to be of historical or technological significance, or have less than 500 produced.

Eh so really I should buy something, ship it to the UK and register it for a couple of years until it is over 25 then ship it to the US where it will be easier to deal with since it would now have documents in english.

Chances are you can get it in the country no problem. Customs can't check everything and they don't care about cars over anything else. The risk is any time the feds can show up and take then crush your car after that. There is no statue of limitations, once your car is contraband it is always contraband. The only way to avoid this is to wait for it to be 25 years old. It can not enter the country until it becomes legal which only happens 25 years to the month of when it was manufactured. Come May all of the cars made in May 25 years ago become legal to import in the United States. They can not be brought in for sale as a typical car before that. Like was mentioned you can do some weird things if you are a dealership or museum but you won't ever be daily driving it and you won't be able to easily sell it later. This is why you see a lot of 'store in Japan till its legal' on some import service websites. Sometimes makes a lot of sense too since you can buy the car before the demand peaks right when it becomes legal.

They see the back and those lights and it says 'Skyline' and that's enough. Much like lifting a wagon and slapping black plastic on the bottom the words 'Skyline' mean a lot more to more people that the GT-R real Godzilla. It is an absurd price true but style over substance.

That is the plan just with it being stored in the UK with people I know rather than Japan. THe example of the R34 GTT for $50k, you can grab one from an auction in Japan right now for under $3k. So buy it now, wait and then bring it in. The also contraban thing sucks because it means I couldn't even get an old 180SX to autocross and just not register it ever.

Oh no, you can bring in things under different rules if you don't ever plan to road use the thing. It just has to be done in a way that makes it so the vehicle will never be road legal ever. If you sneak a car in though it will always be contraband and since people want to race around R33s and R34s and go to McDonalds and never use the drive-thru because lol RHD they always sneak them in because there is no other way to do it. That's what makes them contraband, just like the people that snuck in Defender 90s and then had them crushed. Those cars are always going to be illegal and the Federal government has nothing but time. It's like trying to pick a fight with the IRS, you will lose.
