That's the rub. I Iike a lot of things AV does so it's like "if only he could get over his flaws!" but this team shouldn't be in the playoffs and still playing like no one has a clue where their line mates are or what they're supposed to be doing on the ice. I could write up a big effort post later about other poo poo that drives me crazy and seems like it can only fall on the coaches but I'm phone posting now

AV gets a lot out of some guys but in many ways this team has no discipline at all

I think he made a beautiful post and did a great job and he is good.
Guentzel was sharp, but one goal was a lucky bounce to his stick and the GWG was all Crosby. But then I thought Murray was overhyped too so what do I know.

I just find he does an exceptional job of finding open space in high danger areas. His positioning in the offensive zone is really good.

i mean sure, if guentzel and sheary were playing with bonino instead of crosby, they probably wouldn't be particularly remarkable players. but still, jake especially seems to have the awareness to take full advantage of the opportunities crosby produces, while also having enough skill to be dangerous if left unattended

not a huge sample of course, but even over his 40 games in the regular season he was producing at a ~35 goal / ~70 point pace

I mean, I don't think he's a fluke. He's incredibly smart, has good vision, good hands, and a pretty good shot. He's fairly quick as well. His only downside is size because he does almost everything well.

He absolutely ripped up the AHL too. He's for real.

I think the difference this year from past seasons is Crosby has two good wingers with him. I don't think they could survive losing Letang without Guentzel/Sheary around but those two are a luxury even last year's Pens did not have. Kunitz was good for a while of course but Dupuis was never as good as this year's Sheary/Guentzel.

I don't agree with that at all. They'd still produce whether with Crosby or not. But yeah I mean they definitely take it to the next level with him. But those two are too good individually for me to think it's all Sid. There are shifts where they are the ones carrying play and Sid is the passenger and it happens on a regular basis. Sid has never had that before.

Why the gently caress couldn't this whole series have been games like that? I'd have taken a bitter loss to PIT in 6-7 of tonight's games.

Yeah, I'm not going to fault Torts for a seeming stupid descriptor because I didn't realize it was that bad. All I knew was he got a huge ovation when he came back on ice and then didn't come back in OT and just saw that and went :stonklol:. (On that note, what even IS the rule when a player is bleeding profusely from an obvious injury? What happened seemed hosed up on the surface, but there's probably some good reason I haven't thought of as to why play kept going.)

Trainers needed to give him the Ricky Rudd treatment, eh Boomer/iospace?

Even if you think Polak sucks, and he kinda does, the Leafs sure as poo poo don't have the depth to replace him. But if that guy seriously thinks Gardiner is worse than Polak, he's an idiot.

Similar to any other injury, if the player cannot remove himself from the surface of play but the play in question is not further endangering the injured player or the injury itself is not life threatening, the play continues until the team of the injured player gains possession. In which case, the play is blown dead.

Also, it's all discretionary too. Like, if Pittsburgh had fuckin pulled their goalie or were trying to set picks with Werenskis laid out body then they would have blown it down. Probably. Unless it was Tim Peel and then he would have penalized Werenski for delay of game for bleeding all over the ice.

yeah, poor wording on my part. i don't think they're passengers to sid, but i don't think jakey would produce at a ~70 point rate without him. but that's not a knock on him -- what i'm really trying to say is that i think his skillset is especially well suited to produce with crosby, and it takes more than being a passenger to score at a 70 point pace, even if you are playing with crosby.

According to the NHL rulebook (under Rule 8 - injured players, I'd copy paste it but its too annoying on tablet) it basically says that officials may whistle the play dead at their discretion if they think the injury is serious but aren't required to do so until the injured player's team recovers the puck, and the subsection specifcally for bleeding players simply says that the player "shall be ruled off the ice at the next stoppage of play." The refs could have blown it dead if they wanted to, and it would have been justified by the rules, but they also did nothing wrong by the rulebook by letting play continue.
