So how long before the NHL moves to mandate full-face visors instead of just the eye protective ones?

When the PA loses any semblance of power and guys with shields get grandfathered in. Also, they gonna have to get rid of fighting altogether. And still prob couldn't do it till all the idiots are out of hockey operations because they have a ridiculous idea that it would cause more injuries than it prevents because guys "feel invincible" in cages.

Full face protection fucks with the NHL advising refs to not let players take off their helmets/elbow pads (is the helmet one still a rule? all i find is articles from 2013 or so)

Being well over a PPG at age 21 in the AHL is usually a pretty good indication you've got somethin' goin there. Especially when you then follow it up with 33 in 40 NHL games.

Pretty hard to fluke your way to 75 points in 73 pro games in one year.

According to the NHL rulebook (under Rule 8 - injured players, I'd copy paste it but its too annoying on tablet) it basically says that officials may whistle the play dead at their discretion if they think the injury is serious but aren't required to do so until the injured player's team recovers the puck, and the subsection specifcally for bleeding players simply says that the player "shall be ruled off the ice at the next stoppage of play." The refs could have blown it dead if they wanted to, and it would have been justified by the rules, but they also did nothing wrong by the rulebook by letting play continue.

That's pretty much it, unless they thought Werenski needed immediate can't wait another second care they would wait until Columbus had possession to blow it dead. There are two notable examples of this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hzoOH6-DSY&t=202s

Van Hellemond was later fined by the league for disallowing that, saying it should have counted. And :laffo: at Kovalev going down so easily. If you find the original game feed they talk about how he's known for diving to draw penalties but he clearly can't be faking it because of how quickly he fell.

And then you have the flipside where they don't blow the whistle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTh9fo9znHk

I imagine the referee doesn't want to make that judgment call unless he has no choice.

A thing I really liked about Guentzel is that when they called him up the in that first callup and then at the start of his second callup he was getting 3-4 hits per game, either because they asked him to play that way or because a coach's kid is just going to do whatever to make himself be noticed. When he started getting time with the top 6, the hits disappeared because that wasn't the game he needed to play. 26 hits and 10 shots in his first 9 games, 35 hits and 71 shots in his next 31.

Think he was just trying to make his mark any way that he could. Then he started scoring and he realized hey I can do more or less what I did at the AHL level in the NHL too. And now that he knows he can score he's just dominating.

He's just so efficient with everything he does though. That's what I like about him. Look at his goals tonight. Two of them were bank shots. And he rarely makes a bad pass or bad decision with the puck. He's not necessarily flashy but he rarely makes mistakes with it.

Yeah, I'm not going to fault Torts for a seeming stupid descriptor because I didn't realize it was that bad. All I knew was he got a huge ovation when he came back on ice and then didn't come back in OT and just saw that and went :stonklol:. (On that note, what even IS the rule when a player is bleeding profusely from an obvious injury? What happened seemed hosed up on the surface, but there's probably some good reason I haven't thought of as to why play kept going.)

Trainers needed to give him the Ricky Rudd treatment, eh Boomer/iospace?

Face injuries can bleed profusely even if minor. The rule broadly is that you can't be actively bleeding and go on the ice. Others after this post explained better about stoppage protocol than I was going to.

I mean with that kind of head impact the concussion spotters should have made him go through he protocol but idk if that happened.

The sane answer would be "immediately" but the players prefer visors and the league likes having the pretty hockey faces to market

If the change was going to happen you'd have to roll it up starting with junior hockey as was done with brain buckets, and grandfather any of the big whiny babies that didn't want to switch. I think it will happen in the next 10 years but not the next 3

Don't worry, it's gonna go to game 7. You then got to weigh Toronto's ability to embarrassingly squander a game 7 sure win and the Caps superhuman ability to not even show up for a game 7 and get draped over a barrel.

Barry Trotz is threatening to tweak the lineup tonight which usually means Backstrom and Kuznetsov switch places. I would hope that wouldn't prove necessary, but we'll see. I also suspect that Holtby will be on a short leash tonight, if only to light a fire in the rest of the team as opposed to him deserving of being pulled.

I would hope it would mean Nate Schmidt would be in the lineup but lol at the thought of Trotz replacing Brooks Orpik or Karl "iron man" Alzner with anyone no matter how much better they are.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Backstrom and Kuznetsov flipped. Kuznetsov and Ovechkin seem to benefit from playing with each other.

It would be a mid game decision if the Leafs go up 2 or 3 goals in a row or something. He's done it plenty of times during the regular season to mixed results. In fact I think that crazy 6-5 win over Toronto was one of them.

Unless a player is killed on the ice by an injury that would plausibly be prevented by a cage, I don't think you'll see them. Vision, fighting, danger to un-caged others, marketing faces, etc.

The Wings were the better team and badly out-shot the Caps, but there were 3 games decided by 1 goal including OT in game 2. If Tikkanen doesn't miss an empty net and the Caps are up 4-1 in game 2 I think they win that and split on the road, come back home with confidence and maybe they have a shot. Taking a game from a heavy favorite on their own ice is exactly how an underdog team steals a seri FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
