The backstory here for anyone wondering is that the guy is an Indonesian artist who was working for Marvel, but did things like sneak in references to the Quran about not trusting the Jews or Christians into the comic, as well as reference protests in his home country where muslims were protesting a Christian governor accused of blasphemy for quoting the Quran. After things blew up he got an invitation to go hang out with Islamists which he accepted and posted a picture of the meeting on facebook and in interviews said stuff like "I tried to tell my side of the story, but Marvel is owned by Disney. When Jews are offended, there is no mercy".

Yes they shitcanned him, he declared his career to be over and warned other people to be more careful about making the same mistakes he did(seemingly not in an apologetic way), and they've taken to editing the digital version of the comic to remove the references while the paper copies have started showing up on ebay where they're more expensive than the variant covers, and apparently the last edition of the comic the guy did has had orders spike as well. Sometimes I read these dumb things made by crazy people- on the left and the right- and they never come off like they want to provide useful information; they want to write the AD&D players manual for how to justice socially, or how to pick up chicks, or how to be a cybernazi, etc. Like, I go to DSA meetings and have worked with people at magazines like In These Times, and participate in our city's AIDS walk and all of the people I've met in these places who are getting poo poo done just... want to get poo poo done. Not roll a D20 for oppression and add their privilege modifiers to see in what order they're allowed to use the megaphone. All of this poo poo seems like it's being generated in lieu of doing something real. (In this case literally) It's the "I'll make the wiki" way of participating, except for a lot of people who are just living their lives, internet maniacs are their only contact with progressive ideas, so they're spoiling the whole thing before it can take root.

i'd say that students at Reed College calling the director of "Boys Don't Cry" misogynistic insults, shouting that she made money off the lives of trans individuals, and demanding that she come out as trans take the prize for "most counterproductive LGBT activist shouting match" how prevalent is demanding the outing of a person in younger LGBT circles? because that's a pretty sick thing to do and i'd never want to involve myself with people who think that this is a productive form of activism
