Reverand maynard posted:the difference between books written by LTs and captains compared to those written by majors and higher is almost bizarre with how different their views are I idolized that book through high school and college. Probably within a year of commissioning I began to deny having ever owned it when asked.

gently caress y'all, not dead and still posting, but spent an inebriated day a few weeks back Facebooking a colleague I hadn't seen since he was guarding an intersection in downtown Baghdad in 2003. Goddamn, but the sight of dozens of DPICM artillery rounds arcing through the air to pound the capital... Anywho, quick opinion question: if I end up in a part of the country where there are cool confrontational protests, what kind of attire/accessories can I wear to indicate "I support the leftist/socialist cause but also was in the Marines in two wars so gently caress you fat baby boomer chickenhawks and up with national minimum income and free healthcare"? I'm just concerned that I'd come to some protest and get beaten by the Black Bloc for having a USMC hat, or not being able to use ARE TROOPS cred to shame civvie mouth-breathing Proud Boy kids.

I don't think you'll be convincing the kind of person who goes to that kind of event without cult deprogramming techniques and or a bag lunch to the head. Most of them aren't going to be there for reasonable conversation. Also, nice to see you're still here.

Option b: don't be that guy. Like, if there's some sort of veterans group a la standing rock that's a cool way to organize with like minded people who you can relate to based on shared experiences. But if some trust fund chicken hawk really gets under your skin just tell him you don't recall seeing him in Baghdad '03. Being decked out or not in nine line apparel isn't really gonna mean much to most on either side at these things

The dress uniform is kinda bitchin I guess and it was a great place to focus my teenage/early 20's misanthropy. Also, you can form some brilliant vivid memories that last a lifetime and wont leave you alone, ever. Awake, sleeping, showering, making GBS threads parts of the waking nightmare will always be with you and when you finally die you get eternal firewatch.

Thanks to the Marines I learned how much liquid hot magma can be stored in the human waste system, how long it takes to purge it, and just how many times I can read the walls of a portashitter before the pain takes my vision. THANKS 1775 OORAH KILL

He was a really cool, and I'd never seen him get aggressive like he did in that video. The last I heard of him, he went on a speaking tour after that video, was a contestant on Survivor, and now does advocacy work of some sort.

MassivelyBuckNegro posted:the only honest man in gip TW: a small sprinkling of motivation Realtalk: I was a huge fuckup as a kid and all the way up through high school. Fat, lazy, with no real sense of purpose or direction. My greatest aspiration after high school was to go to community college to study computer science (something that, knowing the math requirements for now, I would have surely failed out of) and play video games. Had I not enlisted, I would probably still be living somewhere near my hometown, probably still incredibly fat and very depressed. I probably would have been a brony too The Marine Corps kicked my rear end in just the way that I needed. It taught me that even though I was a piece of poo poo, I could stop being a piece of poo poo if I tried really, really hard. And so I tried harder than I've ever tried at anything before. I actually started to care about things, including myself. I realized that instead of seeing a goal and thinking "Man, if I weren't such a sack of poo poo I could totally do that thing", I could actually, you know, try to do that thing. I'm still kind of a piece of poo poo, but I've kept the weight off for almost 15 years now and I'm far more mature and worldly than I was back then. I go to a very good school, and my job prospects are looking good. I also started settings goals and achieving them, like learning an instrument, or learning a language. I've won a few prestigious scholarships, which is something that would've sounded ludicrous if you told me back in high school. All in all, I'm doing pretty good. Granted, I almost offed myself a few times because the adjustment really loving sucked, but thankfully I never went through with it. While I can't claim to be one of those hilarious brokebrain dudes who writes everything in all lowercase and is all wacky and zany, the service did gently caress with my head a little bit, but thankfully the school's counseling service is surprisingly good at handling service-related issues. With graduation coming up next month, I'm reminded that I really got a good deal out of the whole thing, and even though I would change a few things if I had to do it over again, I'm very glad that I did it. So yeah. Enlisting was a net positive for me. Sorry for taking up your time, but thanks for listening anyway.

I'm envious of you guys here who've gotten good degrees, jobs, and opportunities...I don't have much to show for it all, but I'm working on it. Also yeah I was an idiot dork nerdy kid just like you were, army gave me a good kick in the rear end. I need to channel that attitude of "just do poo poo" again because I've been just focusing on how hosed up, angry, depressed and hurt I am instead of trying to move on in my life

I joined because all my friends were going to jail or getting killed trying to pretend we were drug dealers. I stuck around because I had a kid right before my first enlistment was up and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to support my family with a real job. After that I just stuck around for the retirement benefits. It's been an interesting journey and I agree that the Marine Corps helped me figure out what was important to me in my life. I have always had a love/hate relationship with the military but if I had to live my life over again I don't know that I'd change the fact that I came in. I was a poor rear end white kid with no prospects in life. Now at least I've set my son up for success in his life by making sure he goes to good schools and I gave him my GI Bill.
