That X6 finale took a shitload of the wind out of our sails, so we're still recovering, but we're getting back on our feet. I brought this video up in our Breath of the Wild thread as well, but we had a Patreon hangout last week where we talked about the status of a bunch of stuff, and The Super Sonic Let's Play was among them:

Either way, looking forward to continuing with the series!

Ah, the last of the Game Gear games. I don't remember this game being completely terrible but it's not a great one either. Though technically wasn't Sonic 3D Blast released before this?

Same week (if not the same day) in November 1996. Tiebreaker was that Sonic Blast came out in Japan in December 1996, but Sonic 3D Blast didn't come out in Japan until 1999.

BONUS POINTS: Sonic Blast is the only game in Part 2 of the Super Sonic Let's Play that is a standard-form, sidescrolling platform Sonic game. Knuckles' Chaotix takes the silver medal for coming close but needing the stretchy ring tether, and Sonic Jam gets a participation trophy.

Sonic Blast looks and plays like a third party Sonic game ported to the DOS would look like. This just makes Sonic 3D Blast that much better looking by comparison, so I'm fine with that. I can't really fault them for attempting to make a Gamegear game look 3D and fancy when the systems are putting out more robust games...but holy hell is it a gaudy mess. Seems like the levels are either completely flat , or full of a bunch of random platforms and pipes with no sense of momentum or level progression,.

The genesis special stages make me motion sick as well, I have to focus on the bridge because the background is doing something it really shouldn't. That said the way you guys went from "oh god this is going to suck" to "holy poo poo sonic 2?" in 3 seconds flat was amazing and I'm glad we were able to convince you to play this version. As far as the level layout, I'm reasonably certain that the absolute level map is the same, but for instance the rock you spindashed through to get to tails is a solid wall with a single cracked part in the genesis.

Also here's the genesis music for Green Grove, which will be relevant a game or so from now.

I KNEW I RECOGNIZED IT. When we recorded the Special Stage bit, we had to play a little of the game itself, that's the tornado-y bit from Emerald Coast! (And another one, I still can't place it.) The Genesis intro (and Panic Puppet 1) is Twinkle Cart too, holy poo poo.

I'm... honestly SUPER surprised they reused so much from this game, though I guess considering the concept art shift they were already gearing up in the first place.

:ssh: The tornado's from windy valley.

And the reason why there's some music re-use is because the Genesis version was the first game Jun Senoue was the lead composer on. He did some sound work on S3&K but the genesis version was the first one where he made the songs. Unfortunately the only two tracks that have references are Twinkle Circuit and The Sky. The Saturn/PC version had the same composer that Sonic R did.

Speaking of music. Here's the genesis tracks for Rusty Ruin.

The Rusty Ruin ones are great, I think they would have fit in perfectly with almost any of Aspect's GG games along with 3D Blast.

I've been listening to the soundtracks side by side, and there's bits and pieces I like better out of both of them. The Saturn version definitely shows it's pedigree from Sonic CD, and leading on into Sonic R, and has a constant melodic motif (You can really here it when you compare the saturn version of Rusty Ruin with a song from a later zone) Whereas the Genesis version has some songs that fall somewhat flat, probably due to the soundfont, which is odd considering Sonic 3&K had an amazing soundfont which got re-used for Ristar. Though maybe that had something to do with Traveller's Tales being involved. Third Party genesis games tended to have really lovely soundtracks.

You can still really hear Senoue's trying to hammer down sonic's "style", which only gets more obvious with the tracks that got full remixes in Adventure.

The Saturn was my first Sega system, and 3D Blast was my first Sonic game after being a fan for a long time thanks to the cartoons and comics. Game's obviously not perfect, but I'll always love the special stages and Richard Jacques' wonderful soundtrack. Rusty Ruin is probably my second favorite theme in the game, and since it sounds like an Enigma track I was always reminded of it whenever I saw the Pure Moods commercial.

But that's next world, let's hit the low point of the Genesis soundtrack with Spring Stadium.

See, the Act 1 theme is bearable. Even seems to carry motifs from elsewhere in the game.

Act 2 on the other hand, makes we want to stab myself in the fact until humming Carnival Night Zone's music is the only thing that distracts me from the endless pain.

On the music front, Diamond Dust Zone.

I really prefer the Genesis music to the Saturn music again, cause Saturn's trying really hard to be Christmas-y which doesn't really fit beyond the fact that there's snow.
Also remember the act one music, it will come back in the place you least expect and you will hate yourself for it.

And since we're here, Volcano Valley. The genesis music is more traditional whereas the Saturn music sounds like someone invented a time machine and stole some tracks from Kingdom Hearts. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Gene Gadget and Panic Puppet

And while we're at it The Final Fight

I'm not sure whether I like The Saturn or Genesis versions of Gene Gadget more (The "Early 90's electronica" asthetic was pretty novel in videogames back then) but the genesis version of PP Act 1 is probably one of the best Genesis tracks, period. Which is why act 2 is such a weird let down.

As far as the game itself. It was an End of Life game that was taxing the Genesis' hardware as it stood, and was a floaty mess besides because forced perspective isometric games always are. The Saturn version isn't any better because it's the same engine with a shiny coat of paint over the jaggy bits. I still like it for the soundtrack, if that wasn't blindingly obvious.

Are you definitely not going to be doing any of the game content? I know Sonic 2 and 3&K has been done to the death in this LP, but a run through of Sonic 1 on Easy with spindash could be a pretty quick way to show off some of the port differences- especially as Easy drops so many Acts.
