The difference between the X-men and the FF is that there actually is a decent chunk of dedicated X-men fans out there. The reaction to the FF slowly being removed on the official forums is pretty telling, people are (outside of a few diehards) mostly going "oh well", "that sucks" or "lol Disney" but if they tried doing it with the X characters so would the oforums revolt.

e; they are changing Reed Richards quotes on items to Hank Pym quotes

Aren't the FF invovled heavily in a lot of the story lines in the comic books though? Which makes it even more hilarious that they are failing in the movies and in video games.

Absurdly low considering where the industry's been since the late 80s. Cape books are a niche market for ubernerds and old grognards, only the very few most successful titles can break 100,000 copies a month and depending on the property, less than 10,000 can sustain an ongoing (for a while, at least). Compared to the heyday of the 40s-70s when the biggest titles routinely pushed over a million a month... yeah.

Superheroes have never been more popular. Comic books have never been less so.

20-25k is the cancellation line for DC or Marvel usually. But digital sales are never released, and some stuff sells a lot digitally.

The Fantastic Four don't have their own comic right now, their last one sold like crap, but Thing and Johnny are in other comics. And they were a major part of the last big Secret Wars event.

I don't see why FF movies keep getting made (although after the last one, hopefully the series is dead for good). It has no cultural relevance anymore; it hasn't for over 20 years. Fans don't give a poo poo, yet studios keep pumping out lovely movies. It's almost like fox execs have no idea what they are doing!

Something something ducks quacking like ducks.

But yeah, Dr. Doom has held more relevance than the heroes he's supposed to be arching. No matter how many times they make up some convoluted story about how Reed is the superior scientist who built a Council of Ric- Reeds with his alternate selves. And they still gently caress up his character more than anything in every single movie.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Marvel is more interested in the FF rights for Doom/Surfer/Galactus than the actual team these days.

I would have actually liked the last FF movie if there's been no executive meddling I think. Weird body-horror science vibe it had was interesting, at least up until the second half and the obvious, lazy reshoots.

And I actually really liked head-explody Doom.

They knew exactly what they were doing. They had to make the movie to keep the film rights and that's exactly why they did it.

You don't blow 100 million on a movie just to keep the rights, the one time they did this in 90s the movie cost them like 100 bucks. They still made a better movie than the last one though.

Yeah, you also do it to suck up a huge amount of tax breaks for your entire studio for running at a loss.

Somehow I don't think deliberately burning $100m generates tax savings worth more than $100m (otherwise just keep the money), but I wouldn't be shocked if there were magical tax rules in place for Hollywood.

The trick is burning other people's money by using filming incentives and investors as well as funneling those "losses" into legally separate production and effects companies. Tax break movies have a long history because not only do you get to shuffle a lot money around now, it may very well even make back its budget in time (as FF has) that you can then use to plow into your next 'loss'.
