They've said they're looking into the same Fox Sports West channels that carry Ducks/Kings for their TV broadcasts. That might sound weird, but Vegas is a tiny media market by way of isolation that can't support it's own RSN. Cox locally offers these Los Angeles based RSNs, but also exempts them from their skinny no-sports packages so any residents who don't care can opt to never see games. What Vegas cable doesn't offer, as the asking price is so high that Cox refuses to inflict it upon customers, is SportsNet LA, the LA Dodgers channel. As that channel is about the Dodgers 24/7/365 even during the MLB offseason, one has to wonder if Charter and the Dodgers have considered ceding a few hours here and there to the Knights in order to push Cox LV into picking it up and adding another cable system in a 2M population area to shove dollar bills into their filthy mouths.

Well, for one thing, it's Sportsnet LA, not Sportsnet LV. The other thing is that it wouldn't necessarily mean that Cox would have to pick up Sportsnet LA. I have Spectrum in Austin, and I haven't been able to watch the Astros since they were in the NL.

Ok, bumping this with a thought. I know there's a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth here because the raiders are shipping over to Vegas too. I'm not worried. Why? Look at Nashville. They have both the Titans and the Predators. Look at how rabid Nashville's fans are. If Nashville of all places can have a fanbase like that with an NFL team in the same city, I don't see why Vegas can't either.
|
# ? Apr 27, 2017 15:47 |

The Titans have a fanbase that can be measured in the dozens. E: and yeah the NFL/NHL fanbase overlap isn't particularly huge, but the NFL is a juggernaut in every conceivable way now, and it's not hard to see the Vegas Raiders quickly overshadow the Knights. This will obviously also depend on how well the Knights market themselves too.

The other thing to remember is the seasons don't particularly overlap. I mean yeah, the beginning of hockey is towards the end of the NFL season, but the playoffs are months apart.

# ? Apr 27, 2017 16:00 |

not only do the seasons barely overlap, but NFL games are typically on Sunday afternoons, with maybe one or two games per team on a Monday or Thursday night.

Titans aren't even the biggest distraction from hockey in town, college football is way bigger.

I think the next expansion team should be a gypsy team with no home arena that plays 82 road games a year. You could stick all the players nobody likes on there and laugh at them when they go 10-70-2

I don't know if the tickets are going to decline and the thing is going to be a huge fuckup, but if it does, the Raiders actually will probably play a role because the media here is just fuckin' hyped as hell for the Raiders. There seemed to be very little taxpayer revolt to the politicians making such an expensive pork barrel project without any input from residents or a public referendum. But the alt-weekly was people in silver facepaint on the cover last week, tonight's leading news story was the excitement/disappointment of the Raiders draft pick, and the classic rock and Motown station every few songs has a drop of a voice saying "The Las Vegas Raiders, I like the sound of that!" I think that the hockey team will actually be on the Strip in a casino-owned arena gives it an edge in terms of "casinos buy seats and give them away". I'm sure casinos will buy a bunch of Raiders tickets too, but it'll probably be a harder get. MGM is probably looking at this as an alternative to showroom entertainment because they have drained the Cirque Du Soleil well bone dry with their rapid expansion in the late 2000s. There's a large Kings fanbase visiting as well as significant fans locally for the Hawks, Sharks, and Wings. I doubt Vegas vs Columbus will sell out, but Vegas vs Big_City_Here should do alright. It's going to have nothing to do with the Raiders. If they're poo poo forever no one will go, if they can have some success, they'll be fine.

I've read that Vegas is a city of transients, not unlike LA. Is that true? Because if so, it could help. I remember reading that one of the reasons LA typically gets considered for franchises despite losing teams often (in the NFL, anyways) is they figure with people moving there often for work purposes there'll be enough of any type of fan that just about any type of team can work there. Of course, LA has a ton of population thanks to suburbs (something like 18 million CSA, Vegas has 2 million). I want this team to work out, if just because expansion is always interesting.

How many cities have the population and fan base to turn vegas games into home games? There's probably a lot of teams that will have fans that will take over when they are contenders, but who's going to send fans regardless of performance (like the Northeast teams in Florida)? I'd guess the 3 Cali teams, Vancouver, and O6 would have enough people to take over year in, year out. Are there enough people in Alberta to invade regularly? Philly?

People form alberta regularly go to vegas for the weekend. Doing it for hockey would be a bonus. It's usually $300-$400 for 3 days hotel and flights. Make it $400-$500 with hockey tickets and the arena will be sold out to flames fans for calgary games, and to oilers fans for oilers games. The oilers sold out their arenas on a 10 year losing streak
