I wish I had attribution for this quote quote:Transhumanism was invented sometime between "I wish I had kickass rad claws like that sabretooth" and "I bet I could use this rock as prosthetic fist." I love how many people don't "get" the kid's clothes in this comic and bring up how weird it is: Now imagine that but 200 years in the future and objectification of the human body has been amplified by several orders of magnitude until everyone's a weird uncanny valley parody of a blow-up sex doll or something

John Sladek wrote a series of short stories called 15 Utopias. One of them involved a future beauty pageant where the lead male contestant has a three-foot coxcomb, and eyes in his female breasts while the lead female contestant has a hundred pounds of implanted fat, extra fingers and toes, and a pair of antlers. There's another contestant with an elephant trunk for a dick.

I read some scifi short story that must have been 1960s or older which started out by saying it was a love story between a man described as "bronze" and a woman who was a gymnast. Then over the course of a few pages it explained that the man was literally bronze, in a radiation-proof space travel body, and the woman breathed water and was covered with a fine layer of insulating fur, and the two of them having sex was physically impossible but they traded recordings of themselves to simulate loving in a computer before the man shipped out from her planet on his spaceship.

http://lesswrong.com/lw/oul/openai_makes_humanity_less_safe/dqng So some AI researcher claims to have received death threats by rationalists who fear that the machine god of their collective nightmares might come alive, and are concerned that this researcher isn't taking the threat of malevolent AI gods quite seriously enough. What does preeminent rationalist (and scientific racist, hereditist etc.) gwern have to say in response? quote:Death threats are a serious matter and such behavior must be called out. If you really have received 3 or more death threats as you claim, you should be naming names of those who have been going around making death threats and providing documentation, as should be possible since you say at least two of them were online. (Not because the death threats are particularly likely to be acted on - I've received a number of angry death threats myself over my DNM work and they never went anywhere, as indeed >99.999% of death threats do - but because it's a serious violation of community norms, specific LW policy against 'threats against specific groups', and merely making them greatly poisons the community, sowing distrust and destroying its reputation.) So not only are you poisoning the community by complaining about death threats without making all info about them and yourself public (or putting them in the safe and trustworthy hands of some lesswrong notable, who'll be guaranteed to handle it in an unbiased way and not use it against you), but also by making vague unspecified claims about specific documented things that now serve only to embarrass the rationalist community. And dare you make the simple observation that the SSC comments are a cesspit of racism and sexism, and that SSC is infamously amenable to such views.

A friend who is an artist just scored a grant for a project on transhumanism. She's taking a strictly outside view, but even with that she's disconcerted by what a can of worms she's opened up. And the worms all hate each other. We met up for too much coffee today and I told her all about what I thought of it, because you may have noticed I think a thing or two. I wrote up some notes from it, just my bits not hers. tl;dr transhumanism the label and subculture is actively detrimental to what good ideas are in it.
