Reminder: American Conservatism is literally a plot to bring back the Gilded Age. quote:On August 23, 1971, prior to accepting Nixon's nomination to the Supreme Court, Powell was commissioned by his neighbor, Eugene B. Sydnor Jr., a close friend and education director of the US Chamber of Commerce, to write a confidential memorandum titled "Attack on the American Free Enterprise System," an anti-Communist, anti-New Deal blueprint for conservative business interests to retake America for the chamber.[13][14] It was based in part on Powell's reaction to the work of activist Ralph Nader, whose 1965 exposé on General Motors, "Unsafe at Any Speed," put a focus on the auto industry putting profit ahead of safety, which triggered the American consumer movement. Powell saw it as an undermining of Americans' faith in enterprise and another step in the slippery slope of socialism. I have a Venezuelan friend who's basically been sending his entire paycheck back home to keep his extended family fed for the last few months, so yeah I'm hoping Maduro steps down but the road back to a functioning country is gonna be long, hard and hungry regardless of who's in charge (or what political system they claim to adhere to)

Phlegmish posted:D&D goon seven years ago: This time it'll work, you'll see Shame on a D&D goon for not predicting the total collapse of the petroleum market (though obviously the venezuelan govt is completely responsible for the consequences of the dutch disease that followed) If anyone is curious about what's going on in Venezuela and why people are suddenly protesting when poo poo has been bad for a while, I'll try to sum it up with the ~top 5 reasons~ 1. (henrique capriles) In march, the supreme court made an attempt to remove the last vestiges of power from the national assembly, where the opposition holds majority. The most popular opposition figure, Henrique Capriles, was very recently barred from holding any public offices for the next 15 years, essentially assassinating his political career. Obviously Capriles refuses to acknowledge the ban and to step down as the governor of Miranda, and has been encouraging people to take to the streets. 2. (bread lines in caracas) Shortages of pretty much everything except local currency and petroleum. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, but it's not edible and it has become Meanwhile the govt has been printing money like crazy, even going as far as flying in 36 747 cargo planes filled with banknotes*1. Inflation is expected to rise to something crazy like 1000 percent this year. The IMF predicts that at the current pace, the inflation will double THAT in 2018. 3. (armed police present after taking over polar's storage facilities) Pretty much every solution put forward by the govt has been heavy handed and has failed. I guess the state has tried to wrest control of the economy from market forces by taking ownership over several private corporations and production facilities, largely to enforce price controls over basic goods- even going as far as to directly seizing control over bakeries and fameously arresting a couple of bakers for allagedly making 'luxury items' like brownies and crossaints rather than normal bread*2 Foreign investors have also been scared away by Maduro thuggery like sending armed police to enforce their takeovers, like they did back when a (pepsi/cola affilated) brewery declared that they had to shut down half their facilities due to a lack of basic supplies*3 4. (pictured: not tiananmen square) Extremely poor handling of the opposition, which I guess plays back into point 2, but this wouldn't be a proper list without five entries, so.. Some thousands have been arrested so far and 5 protestors have been killed while the government claims that the people responsible are either criminals or foreign/opposition provocateurs rather than their own security forces. Protestors that have been arrested claims that they've been tortured and forced to produce false confessions about incitement and even planning a coup*4. The govt largely blames the protestors for the current chaos and compares them to terrorists, which I suppose is about as predictable as it is depressing. 5. (Maduro being burned instead of Judas at the holy week celebrations) Low oil prices killing an economy that was already on a downward spiral aside, Maduro suuuuucks and is not even a quarter as well loved as Chavez was. Not only did he barely scrape by in the elections with a point and a half over Capriles, there were also serious accusations of election fraud. His approval polls are down in the 20-30%s and those numbers would probably look even worse if polled today. All that said, and Maduro's ineptitude and severe lack of charisma aside, the common perception seems to be that this would have been inevitable even with Chavez still at the wheel: http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/post-chavez-venezuela-enters-downward-spiral/ *1 http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-02-04/hyperinflating-venezuela-used-36-boeing-747-cargo-planes-deliver-its-worthless-bank- *2 https://apnews.com/d7ff540901c746efb1cbc6c8dcbef10a *3 http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-venezuelas-largest-beer-company-suspends-work-at-2015jul30-story.html *4 https://www.thecaribbeanradio.com/for-venezuelas-government-protesting-is-terrorism/
