I don't know that I completely agree with the the Murray firing, but he clearly mishandled the defense by ignoring it completely, and he also hired Dan Bylsma who is one of the worst coaches I've ever seen up close.

It's ridiculous to think that lots of players are going to magically turn things around now that Bylsma isn't behind the bench, but when I said yesterday that virtually every single defenseman on the team saw their play tank under Bylsma, it wasn't a joke. His inflexibility was hurting everyone on the blueline, which was in-turn stifling the entire team at even strength. They had 0 transition game, it was appalling.

Generally zone-starts are highly overrated when it comes to player evaluation since most shifts start on the fly anyways. Also Franson, for example, had similar zone starts and still managed to finish as a positive relative possession player while Ristolainen was their worst relative possession player.

His offensive impact is mostly on the PP. He is absolutely brutal at even strength in terms of possession and defense and he doesn't really score a lot given his large number of minutes.

I'm not really sure what they see in him to think he's a #1 defenseman.

IneffectiveMath took a look at some Buffalo D numbers on the twitters and it's a really interesting thing to look at.

https://twitter.com/IneffectiveMath/status/844944983098576896

he has better linemates than he has competition, he gets a ton of ice time, but video game tank is a really good term to use if you mean a very bad one who draws too much fire on himself and gets brutally owned. he might be better if he were used less and got more sheltered zone starts but that's because he's not very good at playing even strength hockey, since he currently is producing like a 5th/6th D-man 5v5. he is pretty filthy on the powerplay

Koopa Kid posted:

I mean he's 22, it's reasonable to expect that he'll learn to play D eventually. He's basically just a more extreme Morgan Rielly and their contacts aren't that different.

agree on the first part but man he and Rielly are running in opposite directions.. Rielly moves the puck very well at 5v5 and generates points at 5v5, he's a sieve like RR but Rasmus doesn't have any real positives there besides time sponge

To be fair, his back gave out. He had a history of slipped disks, but you can't expect a 24 year old to be forced into retirement due to what wasn't much more than a nagging injury.

If you want really bad they managed to commit a combined 16 years and $67M to Christian Ehrhoff and Ville Leino and got a grand total of 263 games and 101 points out of them.

the others? I dunno, we have a lot of dumb fans. I'd hate it, but to be honest whoever gets the job is going to have a rough year with the last year of the much declined Sedins, a couple kids that are probably all middle-sixers at best, half of a competent defense (and not one of them big on scoring goals) and an ownership that probably wants winning to happen right now.

I wasn't sure about Murray being fired but I will say that Pysyk for Kulikov trade was the dumbest poo poo, Pysyk owned

The Sabres defense is garbage and Murray did a lovely job with them. Of course he didn't have very long to prove himself either so who the gently caress knows what's going to happen now

Edit: I thought Risto was good but I also didn't watch many full games this season so I didn't really analyze his play that well. I don't know what to believe any more!!

My favorite part of the Buffalo rebuild is that they only had six picks in the draft where they got Eichel.

That, and when they traded a third for the rights to Jimmy Vesey, who had no intention of signing with them.

They did a bad job of rebuilding and didn't manage to get a lot of talent beyond a few high first round picks, and they decided to hand out some big veteran contracts way too early (Okposo, Moulson)

Pornographic Memory

They also gave a third round pick to the Penguins for the right to hire Dan Bylsma.

he was a coach on the Penguins early 90s Cup teams, head coach of the Whalers for a bit, an assistant on the Senators with some GM stuff in between I think.

Famously, after he was fired by Hartford, Pat Verbeek said it was the best thing that happened to the Whalers because no one respected him and all the other teams made fun of them.

you gotta post the article:

http://articles.courant.com/1994-05-21/sports/9405210429_1_pierre-mcguire-whalers-general-manager-paul-holmgren

quote:

We said McGuire was overemotional.

When the hallway curtain opened after a loss in Boston, McGuire was found by the media wildly smashing sticks against the wall. When the door opened after a loss in Pittsburgh, McGuire was seen knocking furniture around the coach's room.

We said he was full of himself.

Many times he privately said after a game how he outcoached the other guy. But it was something never really made public until May 3, when McGuire proclaimed that no coach in the NHL ``can outwit me.'' That quote ran in The Hockey News and raised eyebrows all over the NHL.

His fascination with trying to outwit the other coach may hurt the Whalers in the long run. Instead of playing kids such as Robert Petrovicky or Kevin Smyth long after it was apparent the team was out of the playoff race, McGuire would fastidiously match lines, go with aging veterans and make sure certain faceoff alignments were always followed. Instead of development, he seemed just to want to squeeze out two points.

Once when he was an assistant coach, McGuire bragged about his strategy to shut down Mario Lemieux. This was after a 7-3 loss and four goals by Kevin Stevens.

On the bench, players said McGuire would taunt the other team, saying he couldn't believe the opposing coach was allowing him certain line matchups. This braggadocio led Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr to mock McGuire in December. McGuire got Jagr for an illegal stick, and after Jagr jumped out of the penalty box, he scored on a breakaway. Although he had scored big goals in two Stanley Cup championships, Jagr called this overtime goal the biggest of his life because he humbled ``that know-it-all.''

Didn't McGuire openly complain about not getting the Penguins job before they hired Rutherford? I feel like people have talked about him as a potential GM for a decade now, without much explanation as to why.

That Jagr quote rules.

Firing Murray looks bad at first glance, but if he was still backing Bylsma and/or doubling-down on some other ineffective ideas, then sure, go get someone better who has a good plan for picking the next HC and building around Eichel.

Pegula has been pretty consistent at making head-scratching decisions in the NFL and NHL though, so I'll believe it when I see it.
