The reason why I haven't been back is I went there a few years ago around the Indy GP. Parking lot and dining area were about 2/3 full, so not a bad crowd and not overbearing for the staff. I was sitting with my now-wife-then-girlfriend outside sharing a table with a family of four and another family of four across the dining area seated after our table got their drinks before any of us did. I asked the server when we would get our drinks and she said in a panicked voice, "oh, we serve bigger groups first because it's easier." All six of us were amazed at that excuse.

We got our drinks and our food came in to-go bags at the same time even though we didn't ask for take out--felt like the staff wanted us to go away. poo poo service and bad excuses are why Mug-n-Bun is poop.

I think having a seat in the grandstand is probably a better way to go.

Somebody posted this earlier:

Synthetic Hermit posted:

I sat in Upper H Stand, Sec 22, Row Z last year, and was quite happy. It was too far away to see the pole, but the view of turn 4 and the pit entrance was excellent. I just did a search for Upper H Stand, and came up with Sec 24, Row Y (approximate view - the fence is closer in reality), which is even further from the pole, but would compensate with a better view of the turn 4 entrance.

Tip: If at all possible, get a seat close to the aisle (at least in regards to H Stand, numbers closer to 1 - sections there are paired, with each one being 15 seats long). The bleachers are crammed like sardines. Also, absolutely wear sun protection, hearing protection (unless you're half-deaf already), and bring or rent a cushion. Plenty of water too. A covered seat is far preferable, if you can find one. In fact, I also did a search for C Stand, and found some covered, high row seats (approximate view). Better pit viewing than H Stand for sure, though I personally prefer seeing the turns up close.

I've only been once, so you'll need ask/look around for info not about turn 4 or the front straight. Try futzing around with that 3D viewer, this guide, and the available tickets until you find a sweet spot.

And don't forget about parking. You can buy a pass, though be warned that the closer to the lots you get, the worse the traffic is. If you want to park quicker, there's a good amount of unofficial parking available (people's front yards), at similar prices to the official parking.

Don't they rattle this around every goddamn time the contract is almost up?

On IMS seating: The only seats I've ever had that I didn't love were up way high, about midway between the exit of 4 and the start/finish line. There wasn't really a good view of either the exit of 4 or the entry to 1 so you didn't get to see that much actual track action. Good view of the pits, though.

The second "worst" was up high in the 1-2 short chute, only because there is absolutely zero cover and it was one of the hottest 500s I've ever been to. It's not Arizona, but you're still going to be in that seat for a long time - shaded seats are by far the best. My ideal seat is as close to the entry of 1 as possible. In the lower grandstands, up as high as you can get before the upper deck obstructs your view.

Best seats are probably the E Penthouse, but good luck ever getting your hands on those tickets for raceday. I managed to get into those for the Freedom 100 one year:

Yeah, Chris Pook constantly tries to get the city to cough up $150m+ of public funds to him to run an F1 race. He's essentially angling for the sports arena cashgrab model.

Zak Brown posted:

Brown outlined the vetting process that will be used to make a final decision on whether McLaren will assemble a team to take on the likes of Team Penske, Chip Ganassi Racing, Andretti Autosport and other front-running IndyCar programs.

"We have three criteria: One, we need to make sure we can be competitive; two, that it's commercially viable, and three, it fits out brand," he said. "I think the Indy 500 ticks all those boxes, and I think IndyCar ultimately ticks all those boxes. We're a fan of IndyCar; we think it's a great form of motorsport. We've done it before. And if we can tick all three of those boxes, in the future, IndyCar would definitely be something we would consider."

The rights to E Penthouse (and to a lesser extent, the vista decks) tickets are passed down within families. You have almost no chance of getting them without working your way into the will of someone who already has them.
