You know, every few months or so we do these "recommend a Batman story" thing and while there is nothing wrong with these lists, I am also kind of curious about some anti-recommend Batman lists. Which stories should people avoid and why.

Avoid Hush if you're already familiar with the ins and outs of Batman and cape book story structure. It makes a half-decent "baby's first Batman," but the more comics you read, the more glaring its faults become.

Also, I can't believe I'm the first to mention Kevin Smith's Cacophony and Widening Gyre. If you like yourself, don't read them. In fact, you'd be better off never reading a comic with Smith's name on it. For a man who loves comics in general, and Batman in particular, he is really loving bad at writing them.

I read Cacophony and it was dire, and have heard only bad things about Widening Gyre, but I have also heard good things about his Green Arrow run and I seem to be one of the only people on this forum who liked his Daredevil run.

I used to speak highly of Quiver and Guardian Devil, but it turns out that was mostly because I was fairly young when I read them. I revisited them when my podcast did a feature episode on Smith a couple years ago, and they didn't hold up at all. They're better than his Batman stuff (his most recent burrito fart is better than his Batman stuff,) but still really sloppy. It's really obvious that they're some of his earliest comic work, because they're hopelessly, hilariously dependent on narration boxes. Especially Guardian Devil. Drawing from memory, so there may be some exaggeration here, but there were pages in that book with more caption boxes than art.

Apart from writing narration like Claremont wrote dialogue in the 70s, his work is guilty of haphazard story structure, inconsistent characterisation, and plot twists so far out of left field that they abruptly change the very genre of the stories, typically in the final chapter. None of that explains his Batman books, which are so completely hosed that I can't begin to explain them.

So my students are writing short plays. They can basically write anything they want; the content doesn't matter. They're just learning how to write scripts for a bigger project we're doing in a couple of weeks. Anyway, I'm getting pretty some nerdy poo poo like Japan ceasing all exporting of anime which leads to a war between the US and Japan.

But the best so far is Suicide Dogs: A story in which the members of the Suicide Squad are captured and their dogs must save them. The dogs are named Harley Quinn Dog, Deadshot Dog, and Captain Boomberang Dog.

Still less nerdy than the play about Sonic trapped on Cybertron.

Look at all the poor opinions I have

This doesn't surprise me, if you are an artist in Canada, you p much have to lie to board patrol because they are all "WARRIORS" protecting "AMERICAN INTERESTS". I teach and perform improv in Canada and that means, it is professionally beneficial for me to go to improv festivals (where you don't make money, unless you run a workshop, but even then not even enough to declare on your taxes) I know groups of people who have been flagged on entry because they are going to perform a free show at a festival they didn't have a work permit. When a group of friends crossed over the boarder patrol thought that one brown guy in the car was suspicious, googled them, found their improv teams facebook page, turned them away because they posted they were going to an american fest. Where they aren't paid.

Bands are ten times as frustrating. When I played when I was young, my mom would drive our gear claiming she was selling it (no one suspects a 45+ white women) and then we would meet up with her and move the gear into the car.

Apparently it was easier to cross pre W Bush era but when they changed immigration to "Keep out the mexicans" they really just kept out Canadian tourists, artists, and skilled labour.

Y'all countries hosed up

Dark Horse sucks, their new edition of Ghost in the Shell still has the sex scene edited out.

For gently caress's sake, Saga is a best seller and has graphic sex scenes, Sunstone is a best seller and is just porn, but Dark Horse doesn't think Americans can handle half a page of gay sex

Because of two stupid pages you'd probably have to keep it bagged or behind counters in stores.
Other than not doing it digitally, I can't really blame them for not bothering with an adults only edition.

Those two pages are all that Sunstone is, and Sunstone isn't bagged or behind counters. Saga has tons of full frontal nudity and actual graphic penetrative sex, and Saga isn't bagged or behind counters

Some teeth long for ripping, gleaming wet from black dog gums. So you keep your eyes closed at the end. You don't want to see such a mouth up close. before the bite, before its oblivion in the goring of your soft parts, the speckled lips will curl back in a whinny of excitement. You just know it.

In fairness, it should be, it's straight unapologetic bondage porn. Hell, Sex Criminals is at least bagged.

Teenage Fansub
Jan 28, 2006

We can all agree they're reprinting it because of the movie, right? It's a mass market movie, so it makes sense to print the mass market version.
Saga and Sunstone would be hugely impacted in cut back Teen rated versions. The books are noted for that stuff and it's intrinsic in the way two pages of pornography really isn't to GITS (I'm guessing.)
It's definitely censorship, but I can't blame them. I think it's completely understandable to not put it out unless there's a real audience for a second special version (again, except in digital form where the extra cost would probably be negligible.)

It's just another example of how hosed and terrible Dark Horse's manga department is. They've left Battle Angel Alita out of print for over a decade, and they keep licensing manga, realeasing a few volumes, and then just giving up. They did the first 14 volume of Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service and then just stopped, started rereleasing it in 3 in1 omnibuses, and then just stopped after the fourth one. They had abandoned Drifters and Blood Blockade Battlefront until they got anime series that drove up interest again. And they charge fifteen dollars per volume for Berserk.

Dark Horse is bad
