What's the service interval on the timing chains and/or tensioners on a 4.6? Mine rattles a little bit at cold startup, and the idle seems to lope a bit. I actually like the idle, because lopey V8, but I don't think they're supposed to do that, and I'm concerned that the cams are wandering around a bit. Random VVT, as it were.

Bought a commuter today. The bus is not enough for 30 miles each way.

No records, 157k, 2008, slight stumble at idle, and no rear seat or under-stereo dash area or center console.

I'll fix the console by 3D printing cupholders and other bits and bobs (there is a big aluminum t-slot track I can easily design things to attach to), but the area under the head unit, I assume, had something there.

It only stumbles when in Drive, when holding your foot on the brake, with the AC on. In park, AC on, it's smooth. I've purchased a set of new COP coils, spark plugs, and a fuel filter and tool.

On the first drive, it was perfect. The second drive, it stumbled on a freeway onramp, and flashed the check engine light. Cycling the AC on and off caused it to stop.

It did a perfect pegleg burnout, so no LSD. Recommended gear oil? Or just go by the manual?

I actually like the stock headunit, so I bought an iSimple FM bypass (jacks in-between the antenna and direct wires to a station, no transmitter) with Bluetooth and an aux port. Cheaper than a new stereo and wiring kit.

Saw the oil was about a quart low, but no smoking, so I don't know if it's just like every 4.6 and slowly eats oil, or if it was low from fleet service.

Anything major I should check out? No weeping by the Tstat, yet, but the engine was clearly steam cleaned. Also, do rear seats from able Grand Marquis fit? I've gotta fix that.

I'd check the suspension if you haven't already just to make sure the ball joints are tight and nothing is obviously worn, also rear axle seals/bearings. I'm only mentioning it because I just had to do mine. Grand Marquis rear seats should fit, they're basically identical cars. I believe reading somewhere they used an '86 for the original movie car, but I could be wrong. They look completely the same between '79 and '87 so it could be any of those. That one that guy built looks amazing!

So, I figured I'd go ahead and document what I've had to do on this car since I bought it to show off some of the common issues as well as justify taking tons of photos over the course of owning this car since August of last year. I've compressed some of the images to make it a little more mobile-friendly, but it's still a lot of pictures. To start, I was hunting high and low for one of these wagons; I don't know why I wanted one so bad, but I was really looking for a Bronco at the time and I had just come off of a '94 Thunderbird V8 that I adored. I had test driven one of these wagons in Dallas, but it had a bunch of mechanical issues and the owner wanted way too much. I finally found this, sitting at some mom 'n pop car lot in Texarkana, Arkansas. I went and picked it up, didn't even test drive it or anything. Drove it home the two hours.

It had that crinkle in the door allegedly due to the car dealer owner backing another car into it. It was a shame, because it is absolutely solid and rust free. The first thing I did that weekend was see if I could make it look a little nicer. The paint was absolutely burnt out, but luckily it was only single stage paint. I slapped some nu-finish on it just to see what would happen and it came out surprisingly good:

The next thing was inspection, it failed twice. Not for emissions, but because when you turned on the headlights, that's all that would come on. No dashboard, no taillights, nothing. I took it to a shop and they replaced the headlight switch. I told them to keep the OEM switch because I wanted to mess around with it, and took the car home. Well, a local car-show was coming up, I figured I'd take it to that. Well, driving to the show early in the morning, I put on my brights, and off goes everything but the headlights. I was back at square one. The car show went great, it was busy and I won no awards, including the fun award of The Family Truckster which I lost to a Chevrolet C10 Pickup.

Well, I ended up taking it all apart myself:

The plug had melted itself to the aftermarket headlight switch. I replaced the plug for the switch, had to re-wire that burnt lead, and slapped the original OEM switch I had kept back into it. It's still working to this day, brights and all! Also, while driving to O'reily's for parts, my roomate's 99 Pissat Passat's window regulator blew up.

With the car passing inspection and registered, I took to the biggest issues the car had:
  • The driver's side (only) mirror control was missing
  • The AC didn't work
  • The steering column was getting REALLY hot when I drove it.
  • It had no clock
  • The car was noisy as all getout above 45mph from all the seals being dried out/damaged on the windows and doors.
  • The crazy things the previous owner did (I'll get into those)

I'll keep typing up the rest of it, but I'll start with this to get the ball rolling. In the next post I'll document what I did with all those issues.

Luxrage
Jan 2, 2017

I have no idea what I'm doing!

Continuing from where I left off, the first issue I had to tackle was the driver's side mirror control being nonexistant. I thought maybe it was broken off at some point, but much to my disbelief it was inside the door.

I pulled the door-card off with not that much effort. Just about 6 screws and 12 clips and the whole thing comes apart. The only piece of wiring on it was the power door lock button, so it was really an entire separate part from the rest of the car. The switch was only held in place by a single set screw in the door. Not sure why the previous owner was even messing with that, I doubt it backed out on its own.

I decided to replace the window channel seal while I was in there, the seal had broken in the top corner where there's an abrupt 90 degree bend. I couldn't find the OEM part and there weren't really any aftermarkets that I could find at the time with a moulded corner in them, so I just bought a strip from an F150 and went to town with it. It worked out pretty well, the corner ended up not being an issue.

The next issue was that blanking plate that was devoid of any timepiece. I managed to track down a clock on ebay, and luckily the plug was still back there, just taped to the top of the dashboard. I'm still blown away on how easy these dashboards are to pull off. Just about 11 screws and some clips and the whole front and top comes off. The speakers were in good shape, surprisingly.

I have no idea what that hole is on the right side. I don't think this car was ever made for right hand drive markets, and unless this shares a dash with some other platform I'm at a complete loss!

While driving the car, I noticed a loud hiss coming from under the dashboard, and the car was surging at idle randomly. I tracked the hissing down to a broken Vacuum Parking Break Release Switch which was an easy enough replacement after I sliced my hand open pulling the tubing off of the old one! Once it was installed the idle surging stopped and my parking break auto releases itself when in drive! The back window power motor also stopped working. I took it to a local mechanic that replaced it, broke the rear window in the process, ordered another, broke that window, and finally installed a third window. They didn't charge me, but they told me not to bring that car back to them. I have since found a much better place for the big jobs!

You can barely see it hiding up there in the steering column on the right side.

At this point it's still blazing hot here in north Texas, and I'm desparate to get the AC fixed. I take it to a real rural mechnic's shop that specializes in older cars, and they pretty much confirmed what I had guessed, that the AC compressor was completely shot. At this point I should say that when I bought it, it was advertised as the AC working. When I got there, the accessory belt wasn't even on it. Part of getting the car for the price I got it at was that, combined with the door, I talked an absolute crapton off of the price of this thing. Anyways, they find the smog pump seized. I found one for cheap and had them install that as well. Now the AC works! Also around this time I find out that this generation of Crown Vic has an apparent steering column fire issue stemming from the ignitions, around the same time the ignition goes out, the car is driveable, but without turn signals and a heater blower motor. I replaced that, the part was only twelve dollars!

I also went through and replaced the headlights along with 5 burnt out bulbs on various parts of the car. Replaced them with glass and all four headlamps only cost me about 60 dollars!

I also found an upgraded radio from an '88 Cougar at a local parts yard and swapped that out, as well as new rear speaker covers that I found from a mustang website. On top of all that, I wired up a permanent dashcam with a fusetap to the radio's fuse.

Going back to the window that had been replaced, the guys that broke it never cleaned out the tailgate, so every time I had to lower it, I could hear broken glass rolling around in it. The drain holes would randomly poop glass at me as well. So I pulled that apart and found the previous owner had disengaged the rear power door lock. I hooked it back up and it worked fine. This is a good point to say that no matter where I looked in this car, I found sand. There was sand everywhere. I also replaced the door seals for the driver and passenger doors, as well as the passenger window seal. Found sand, of course. I couldn't find a moulded right angle door seal when I was buying parts, and only after I did the full install did I find some for GMC pickups in a classic auto mag... oh well, they work fine!

So as it stands now, the car's a solid driver. There are some future problems, the front wheel well is rubbing on something I can't find, the passenger door is still wrinkly, and there's a worn out boot or something somewhere, because the car makes some chuffing noises in the rear when it's cold. The paint is starting to oxidize again, but I have a buffer I can borrow and I might just give it a go-through with it and get a more permanent shine. One of the copper tabs for the rear window defroster is broken, so that doesn't work either. The car's water-tight now, so I can't complain, and it's so nice on the inside, you almost can't tell the previous owner used it as a beach van!

Let me know if you have any questions, I've got more pictures of all this stuff that I worked on!

It's a cool feature, but even the aftermarket part tends to still leak vaccuum when it's cold. I have read about people just capping it off if the switch goes since it'll just cause more leaks if the part you get to replace it isn't 100% perfect.

I was looking at the squirrel cage today and was thinking about getting a cabin air filter for it. They sell kits for newer crown vics, and while the opening is the same, the top cover isn't. The generation mine is has a raised portion on the back to force air down into it. I'd like to get something to filter out some of the crap, though, as it's dusty as hell here and I have seen a buildup of it on the '87.

Here's the extent of the plastic wood surround on the Country Squire, the clearcoat is peeling all over, and you can see where water is getting in. I need to go through it and cut off all the little hanging bits. You can hear them flapping around when you drive with the windows down.

This is kind of odd around the luggage rack, not sure if the seal is compromised or it it's just something that someone did somewhere down the line. I'm not seeing any issues on the headliner so I don't know what's up.

P71, 153k, pretty good nick all things considered. Brake light doesn't work, that's the only real issue (the relay for it is loud as gently caress though).

My trip meter has odometer, trip, and a third unlabeled setting that seems to display some upside down numbers, is that something to do with speedo calibration? Also is there a quick way to see what rear end this car has? Haven't been on the highway yet but it turns 1500rpm at 50 in what i think is top gear.

It was reportedly a detective's car so no holes where cruiser equipment used to be. Full dash, front bench, aftermarket cup holders beneath the factory ones, standard stereo, police map light, and of course the spotlight.

If there's a loud relay for the brake pedal, check under the column deep down for a black plastic box labeled "TREMCO". If there, turn it off or bypass it. I have one, and it intercepts the brake signal when on and has a LOUD relay in it.

On mine it prevents shifting out of park unless I press a secret button under the floormat.

Looks good, how much you end up paying for it?

Now you're gonna need tint, vent shades, and a good sun shade if you wanna keep that thing cool this summer. You can get custom sun shades on Amazon for 30 bucks (you don't want a universal trust me) and vent shades aren't expensive either. Tint will be the most costly but as you know it's pretty much a necessity down here.

Other than that, have the transmission serviced if it hasn't been done recently as it's the only real weak point of these cars. The transmissions will poo poo if neglected.
