Makoto and Yusuke rank about right below Haru and Ann, tbh. Those are solid performances with a few weird moments, but are overall good and memorable. Makoto and Yusuke are adequate performances, but they're not particularly memorable or stand out, especially not in a cast that got voices that got the expressiveness of characters like Ryuji and Morgana so well. I still feel Makoto is miscast and neither VA of hers matches the character all that well and Yusuke's is still just Sugita to me, because he loving has insanely good comedic timing on anything he says and his voice has a lot of character to it and Mercer's is like just Mercer... again. It's just Matt Mercer again, not even the best Matt Mercer, just his normal voice.

This is outright wrong though, because Caroline and Justine have delivery that is just as amazing as the JP ones and Caroline saying poo poo like HEY INMATE and NOW CHOOSE is good.

I once heard a voice actress (can't remember her name right now) describe that Sugita's acting is like he always goes all out, regardless if it's a one-time thing or a regular role and that working with him is kinda hard because, as you said, he pours a lot of character onto his performances.

Also, Rina Sato voicing Makoto is basically perfect taking into account just how good she is at the whole "Hot-Blooded under the surface" shtick.

Wait, what's wrong with the protagonist's voice in Persona 5?

Captain Baal

The problem is that I don't hear a lot of that from her performance as Makoto. Some of her lines are delivered like that, but not enough to make me feel like that's a big part of the character. It's especially weird since she just came off of voicing Velvet in Berseria, so that should be no problem, but for whatever reason even during her awakening scene she doesn't sound like she's going as rear end kicking hot blooded as she does at times with Velvet. There is a decent age difference to consider and that they're not the same characters, but it really does come off weird that they never really go all in on making her ever sound tough or badass. She still kinda sounds like a waifish teenage girl throughout the whole thing.

Harrow posted:

The lines he has when ripping off the masks of Persona are wooden, his persona calls are mostly really flat, and his voice has no strength or showmanship to it whatsoever. Compare his and Fukuyama's voices and listen to how much fun Fukuyama is have tearing off the faces of Persona, how even saying fuckin Pixie's name has him boom it out. A big part of Joker is that he hides a darkness inside of him that comes out in the Palace and manifests as a thief who does all kinds of showoff nonsense and is incredibly bombastic. Mobus doesn't convey any of that. It's especially notable when he's voicing Arsene and he's loving amazing doing that, but then you get to the protag and it's just some dude's voice.

Huh, maybe it's because I hadn't listened to his Japanese voice and don't have that basis for comparison, then. I don't think I noticed any real woodenness to his Persona name call-outs or anything, but I also wasn't really expecting much more than just saying the Persona's name. I'll turn on the Japanese voices for a bit and see, I guess.

Obv, it's not gonna compare to Sugita, but I really enjoyed Mercer's Yusuke. I don't consume a lot of Mercer's line work, but Yusuke's was a voice I personally don't hear from him much and it worked while still retaining a good sense of comedic timing, tho I wonder how much that is Yusuke usually having the funniest stuff to say at any given time.

I liked Ann's English voice, especially when she leans hard into playing up a blond airhead, though her JPN voice is great too, yelling CHOTTO MATTE YO in like every scene. Makoto's voice is a weird one, but I really wound up liking it too

For sure don't start it before finishing SMT 4 because it starts near the end of SMT 4 and spoils a lot of things right at the beginning.

I'm in the endgame of SMT4 on the Neutral route, and really regretting getting the Neutral route. I'm at the end of the first dungeon but the boss was kicking my rear end. I wanted to go fuse some stronger demons but felt like that was going to be :effort:. So I put it down and picked Persona 3 back up again, which I finished.

I think I'm going to do that once I'm done with Persona 5. I have a bad habit of getting too attached to the world of Persona games so I'm gonna need a step-down game. And I haven't played SMT4A yet so it seems like a good candidate.

SMT4A is generally better about difficulty dropoff than SMT4 was, but yeah War is good if you're used to SMT4.

War.
  • War is not your friend.
  • War will try to feel you up in a rickety public toilet.
  • War will spit on you after kneeing you in the face.
  • War will make fun of your hobbies and the fiction you've experienced.
  • War will try to make you its butt boy at the first chance it gets.
  • War will leave you broken-boned, without your basic cognitive/motor functions and/or just plain dead.
So yes, play Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse in War difficulty. gently caress up by entering to the first Domain you see and get almost all of your demons killed + almost all of your items spent in the three demon encounters you lasted before punking out of said domain, going back to the starter town, getting a free heal, suck your thumb for a few minutes and talk poo poo to your dogs, all of this during the first excursion out of your goddamn district. Get called a bitch-rear end-chucklefuck by Dagda the moment you get killed right after saving, despite the fact that you're almost level 10 because of said 3 dumb fights. Bravo!

In all seriousness, do play the game in the hardest difficulty. It's weird how much it makes you feel that, despite normal difficulty doing the job just fine, War almost makes you think that you're taking it all for granted. :) And yes, you're Morty in all of these instances, in case you were curious.

Here's my opinion on the P5 dub:

Makoto, Futaba, and especially Ryuji and Morgana are good. I don't understand why Baal says Igor sucks because I think his (first) new voice is great, although I do kind of miss the original English VA too. Sojiro is also great, even if it's just Jamieson Price doing his usual thing. DC Douglas is great as Kamoshida but I still think it would have been better if he had been cast as Shido. I guess it makes sense if they wanted to preserve the Gundam reference though. I liked Okumura's English voice, for what little we get of it in the grand scheme of things.

Haru and Akechi are bad, although I don't necessarily blame Haru's actress so much because she gets so little to do in comparison with like every other major character. Kaneshiro is awful and sounds like some dude they just got off the street. Sae has some really bad lines during the interrogation but she's good as the Shadow and post-heart stealing. I don't think the protagonist has a lot of memorable Persona calls (the only one outside of the final cutscene that I remember distinctly liking is Hecatonchires) but I did find myself saying ALRIGHT to myself in his voice a lot for whatever that's worth.

All of the other major characters are varying degrees of 'fine', a bunch of the incidental NPCs are bad but most of them are at least bad in a funny way. It's probably not quite as good as the vanilla P4 dub (I didn't play Golden) overall, and Atlus JP forcing weird pronunciations on certain names for no obvious reason is still really weird, but it certainly didn't hamper my enjoyment of the game. It's funny because I thought Max Mittleman sounded horrible in the initial Ryuji trailer they put out but he ended up being my favorite English VA in the game by a mile. GET WRECKED.
