So we have been having pretty ok music discussion in the DAD thread this week, so why not make a dedicated thread? POST YOUR FAVORITE ALBUMS/BANDS/SONGS AND MAYBE SOME YOUTUBE LINKS DAMMIT!!! We won't even judge that hard, although if you try to claim that your favorite albums of all time are from Zappa and they aren't the weird rear end comedy albums then I will request a ban or probie for the offender. Nobody got time for 20 mins of experimental jazz. I personally can't say if I have a favorite band or not, but I definitely have favorite albums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5TnBziQ-jo Tears of Rage is the best opener to an album IMO. I can listen to this album on repeat for hours. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXg68uRSF3c Ain't even ashamed to admit that this is one of the most fun albums to listen to when driving. Pretty sure I saw LTJ in concert every time they came through Denver from '97 to '05 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMzKgB1cf24 The Shins rule, second album is better than the first, but they are all amazing. Saw them live a few years back and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They are touring this year with Spoon, probably gonna spend way more money than I need to on the tix for that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lahE0Igv49k Couldn't find a link to the whole album, but this song is my favorite from Icky Mettle. Eric Bachmann makes amazing music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsMs-bF5yj8 I just really like this album, lots of good songs on it. Also, only brit band I can think of in the last 20 years that didn't release an over produced trash second album.I could be wrong though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjOVICqIpjQ Dino JR rocks, also amazing live show.

I'm home sick today, so yeah, why not air my semi-embarrasing taste in whole albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85J91FwPrTw I'm a sucker for everything Andy Partridge, but like most great artists he truly shines when forced to work outside his comfort zone. Apparently Skylarking was a nightmare to make... but drat if it isn't a masterpiece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9A_FJH8vjE The first Flecktones album, if you play either Banjo or Harmonica do not think about how they're actually playing these instruments or your brain will melt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_OkcVLBB9A Yes I am a sadbrains Tom Waits fan. This album opens with Primus as his backup band and climaxes with Georgia Lee, the saddest loving song I've ever heard in my entire life. All that and a Chocolate Jesus...

I don't know a ton about XTC, but I heard an interesting interview with Todd Rundgren talking about producing an album for them. I play the banjo, poorly, and I'm blown away by Bela Fleck.

They fought like caged animals making this record, which is why it reaches further than any of the others. Seriously a master's course in music production just in the history of this one record. And yeah Bela is like the patron saint of banjo. MORE RECORDS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3qOD-hhrQ The pure funk source. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgoKwMbPSO8 A B+ Prog fan tells you they love Yes. And don't get me wrong, I love Yes too. But Gentle Giant is as prog-as-it-gets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSoPVGjHoqY A live record to mix things up. Bill Frisell, another stringed instrument god, and Elvis Costello. Just the two of them, playing Elvis' catalog. Amazing.

There is no shortage of loving weird Peppa Pig related videos on Youtube. The Russians have a weird obsession with that show... Anyhow, meant to post this last night, but got distracted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUqcgabS86A I think this is my favorite Devo album, hope they can put out another one before anymore of them die off. Like for real, there was a 20 year gap between albums, there is no reason that this one should be as good as it is.

RE: XTC, I never made the connection between XTC and every other band to come out of the UK in the 80's. One of my favorites is Shriekback, which was founded by Barry Andrews and some other guys. They had two amazing albums, and a bunch of songs on the Manhunter soundtrack. Don't listen to their 4trh album and beyond, they are rough, unless you really want to listen to a goth rock cover of Get Down Tonight, then knock yourself out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNA4MDc9U50 Nemesis is their big song, but all of Oil & Gold is good, Jam science is also really good, no clue about their first album though...

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire is awful good, and I've been listening to it a lot lately. So're Mr. Beast, Blonde on Blonde, The Wall, The Commitments, Sprained Ankle... But my all time favorite, which I've loved unflaggingly since I first heard it 15 years ago, is Johnny Cash's American IV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M53FcPoWtA

Iron Maiden - seventh son of a seventh son. It's a concept album. About a kid born with second sight. Devil drives his father insane then makes his life hell as he tries to warn the village of impending doom and is blamed for the disaster. Has enough of their poo poo and peaces the gently caress out. Contains such tracks as The Evil That Men Do, Infinite Dreams, Can I Play With Madness. Probably maiden's best album.

Feel like lots of dudes here would get a kick out of Pelican. Really loving good instrumental metal. Also Two Finger is right about Maiden; Seventh Son is amazing and their new album Book of Souls wrecks poo poo.

suboptimal posted:Feel like lots of dudes here would get a kick out of Pelican. Really loving good instrumental metal. I said Seventh Son is probably their best album because it hangs together so well. I think Book of Souls has some of their best songs (title track, Eternity, Empire) but I gotta be honest, Red and Black is too long, Speed of Light doesn't do it for me at all, and the rest I don't feel are up to the same standard. So it's not quite as good as an album, even if the highs are higher. I also want to give a special shoutout to two of my favourite live albums of all time. First (of course) is the joyous Rock in Rio, where Maiden played to a crowd of a quarter million (which I think is about the size of Trump's inauguration?) The whole thing on DVD is amazing - the energy they bring to the stage is phenomenal especially when you consider they were all around 50 when it was done. Fear of the Dark live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6bjEsBdIAc The other is Judas Priest with Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals. Notable for the unusual live performance of Diamonds and Rust, and generally being a loving kickass album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9iV8xlidto A Touch of Evil and Night Crawler are both highlights too.
