And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.
Blast from the Past

Bike Chat

quote:

The son of an 85-year-old man, who was killed on a St Kilda pedestrian crossing this week when hit by a cyclist, is calling for compulsory registration of bicycles and licensing for cyclists.

Alastair Mackenzie said yesterday: "How many innocent people need to die before these laws catch up?"

His father, Norman Mackenzie, had been walking his blue Staffordshire bull terrier puppy along Jacka Boulevard, as he did twice a day every day, when he was hit by the cyclist at the crossing at 5.30pm on Tuesday, police believe.

Mr MacKenzie was taken to hospital but later died of serious head injuries. The 30-year-old cyclist, a Port Melbourne man, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A doctor at the scene tended to Mr Mackenzie immediately after he was hit, his son said. He is hoping the doctor can come forward or contact police to assist with the investigation.

Norman Mackenzie, a father of two, was "extremely vigilant when it comes to crossing roads", his son said. He was working to teach his pup traffic awareness, making her sit and wait for the light to go green. When he was hit, his pockets were full of dog treats, his son said.

"He was a gentle, generous loving and caring man that tried to help everyone he met," Alastair said. "He had strong beliefs and made a lot of effort to improve the experience people had in life and wanted to make the world a better place."

He said he did not want his father's death to be in vain. He wants bicycles to be registered and insured, with a licence system introduced to ensure that cyclists can prove they know the road rules.

Victoria's Bicycle Network is strongly opposed to cyclist registration, calling the idea "absurd".

"There is no credible support for bicycle registration anywhere in the world," the lobby group's website says.

"Proposed schemes would simply waste money, not improve road safety and discourage people from bike riding."

Cycle trails along the beaches of Port Phillip are very popular with riders, but come with a dangerous reputation.

In 2015, a young woman was left with a fractured skull and two others were hospitalised after a crash at Beach Road, Mentone, during the notorious "hell ride".

In 2006, 77-year-old James Gould was struck and killed by a cyclist on Beach Road in Mentone.

It couldn't possibly be from pedestrians stepping out into roads without looking either.

I nearly hit 2 people who did this to me on one 50 stretch of busy city road earlier in the week. And I've hit someone in the past who walked out into grade separated bike paths without looking, luckily that one was uphill so I was only going ~25km/h

Is this actually the case? What does anti-semitism have to do with leftism? I thought the socialist ideal was to move past racism and focus on the class war.

On a serious note, how does one go about getting involved with refugee outreach in Melbourne? I want to do something to help improve quality of life for refugees and help break up the monotony, but I have literally zero idea where to start. The immigration centres in Broady and Maribyrnong aren't far from me, and I'd be open to going along and doing whatever.

Registration to fund no-fault insurance for people injured by bicycles might be useful though. If his Dad hadn't died he'd have a lot of medical bills, and the cyclist might not be able to pay those bills.

Or we could have universal, totally 'free' healthcare. That might be easier.

I think it's pretty long but there's been some traditional distrust of Jews coming from (before?) the time of the Russian Civil War???? Usually the most recent ones I see around are the super pro-Palestine ones which sucks because stopping the Palestinian genocide is really good and important but IDK if we can also call for Israeli genocide without it basically coming off as wanting to murder the jews again.

You've hit the nail on the head WRT "the socialist ideal", IMHO. It's not like the massive problem gripping the (actual) left generally, but it's still something to reflect on.

These are actually always super-good points to consider and I think everyone who considers themselves left leaning or socialist should consider how they feel about the Palestine vs. Israel thing. I think that you can be against what Israel is doing without being anti-semitic (I'm very against what Israel is doing), but it can bleed over a fair bit so I think it's always a balancing act.

"If Australia persists in following the US' moves to isolate and stifle North Korea … this will be a suicidal act of coming within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of North Korea."

The North Korean Foreign Ministry also directly addressed Ms Bishop's interview, warning she had "better think twice about the consequences to be entailed by her reckless tongue-lashing before flattering the US".
