it's been loving impossible to hire a platform (devops) engineer in boston. salary is awesome, the company is well known and great to work for, the role is cool, and we're doing a ton of sweet greenfield stuff with distributed systems but can barely get a nibble. idk wtf.

Either the salary isn't awesome or your company is well known for having a toxic culture.

generally this but our team is cloud focused rather than working on build systems.

the problem is not people interviewing and going elsewhere it's that the senior devops community is tiny and most people like their job and aren't interested in moving.

are you that mainframe hacker guy?

remember when you wanted to learn how to make a cool website so you installed LAMP in a VM and coded up some lovely example website. Then you put that poo poo on the web and any change you made you did it in production?

That's devops.

yeah it's good base but obviously we're not doing as well as goog/fb/etc so additional comp is clearly not worth as much. that said i'm a l2 (mid-level) and my total comp is north of 150k

nope phone screen with recruiter, phone interview with manager, then on site with our team

that's what i've been pushing for honestly. we'd have much better luck hiring 3 juniors to cover the 2 senior reqs we have open and then teach and promote

it's very much this. we also have a great rep and a great office and good compensation but we have a hell of a time finding senior SREs. at least once hired they stay put.

we've more or less thrown our hands up and decided we can train juniors up, but finding good junior devops people is hard too!

in so many places devops/sre is a role you grow into at a company and not something you train for, and if you never make the "extinguishing prod fires of my own creation is devops" connection then you never think to look for an sre role

yeah, had one of those recently. at least it was the last of a 5 interview series for the day, and the others were in person. it's kind of weird being just left alone in a random room in an office to talk to a screen about your experience. didn't end up getting an offer though, so the hunt is still on.

sigh. got a call from the recruiter. they want me and I would love to work for them (interesting work) but they want me in nyc and at a pay that wouldn't work. :( this is the first recruitment where my specific skillset was an exact match and they wanted me but it was not meant to be

maybe they'd accept remoting in and an occasional visit. probably not though

Is anyone junior devops before they are specifically hired for that position?

Right? If the pay was right I'd move to Boston to do devops, but I'd very much be learning on the job.
