Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

Probably a good time to mention now that Hard on Conquest is as tough as Lunatic on Birthright. They may not be as beefy, but the enemies have powerful skills that are more detrimental and threatening.

Maybe if we can get to them first, we can dissuade them from fighting...

This map is a bit of a reverse of the Birthright version. Visiting houses here will shut the doors and and prevent reinforcements. You also get 10k gold if you visit at least three houses, 5k if you only manage two.

Corrine will visit the immediate house, as Elise has to scoot away to a nearby Dragon Vein.

Huh? Don't leave my house today? Well, if you say so. I'll tell my family.

The reinforcements from these villages are triggered by this specific type of soldier. He only has 3 move, and will always gun for the next village to open. It's a race to eliminate the current batch of enemies and kill him.

*The next turn, two figures arrive*

Sup, Owain

Ahhh, I understand. The shadows within say our foes are unwitting yet dangerous. So it has been decided by the treacherous hand of fate. We have no choice... We must use the darkness swarming inside me to claim the golden glow of victory!
You're a drat wierdo, Odin. But you know that, don't you? In any case, I'm not going to let you take all the glory for yourself.
Uh, what's going on over there? Who are you?

Well, it can't be helped. Who am I, you ask...
I am none other than... Odin Dark! I am the keeper of darkness, chosen protector of the youngest Nohrian prince!
So...you're Leo's retainer? And he sent you here to help me?

So Xander's plan is basically "send all the best non-royals." Such brilliance.

Yes, that would be the sane version of what Odin just said. My name is Niles. By royal decree of Lord Leo, I am here to serve you.
Serve me? I would rather you fight at my side as a friend and equal...
...
Don't worry about Niles. He's always like this. I suspect he's bitter that the dark spirits chose to inhabit me and not him...
But back to the matter at hand. Don't be afraid, Lady Corrine...

Ahh...the power! My fell hand awakens... It longs for the blood of our foes! I must annihilate them all, or the curse will surely—
Woah, there! Take it easy. Let's all just calm down, OK?
What, why? But my sword...the curse... What's the holdup?
Is there a problem? When can we start inflicting pain?

Besides, I would like to settle this dispute with as little bloodshed as possible.
So we can inflict pain so long as it doesn't cause bloodshed? Interesting challenge...
No. Just...no.
But I prepared at least a dozen torturous moves just for today! I named them all, too. They might be my best names yet...

Now what would Lissa if she heard you say that, mister?

Well, if it's an order from my liege's royal sibling, I am obliged to obey. I may appear somewhat despicable, but I have the utmost loyalty for Lord Leo.
I, too, am a bastion of loyalty, despite the dark forces beckon me from beyond.
It will be hard to hold back my true power, but for you, I'll see what I can do.
Thank you, gentlemen. Now let's finish this quickly!

PSkill: Aching Blood-When equipped with a forged weapon whose name is at least 12 characters, Critical rate +10

He is...balanced? That's probably the nicest way of putting it. He's following the Erk school of being competent at spell slinging and hitting low resistance. Except this is Conquest where average across-the-board stats is really bad.

Kidnap-When there is a Prison in My Castle, the user can select the “Capture” command. If a generic enemy is defeated, they will be sent to the Prison

Now Niles on other hand is what Conquest wants: Specialists. In his case, it's to kill mages and kill them hard. 15 speed is absurd at this point.

Odin supports Niles as he travels across the frozen lake and tries to snipe out some mages. His sky high resistance stonewalls the attacks, despite some of them already having steel tier weapons.

The Dragon Veins on this map thaws out the lake for one turn. This activation is important for two reasons:
-Keeps the southern mages at a perfect distance in which Niles can counter kill them
-Keeps the middle mages from helping out the recent village reinforcements

Did you truly manage to melt the lake's ice with the power of Dragon Veins? Well, it was all for nothing. This sacred land is blessed with divine protection. By the power of the Ice Dragon, our lake will freeze once more!

Jakob's here will be the other mage killer, as he can easily one-turn kill all of them on the map without much damage in return.

He gets to lvl 7 gaining everything but STR/SPD/DEF.

More mages get eliminated in the next turn, as Niles in particular continues westward to that southern village.

Elise uses the Freeze staff to keep that trigger Lancer in check, which is key to easily getting the 10k reward.

Niles completes his mission at the start of the next turn.

Huh? You're not going to kill me? I'm so confused... I'm locking up now. Don't knockin' again, y'hear?

By the way, Flora's hanging around and she had a Freeze Staff to impede whoever tried the Niles strategy. Thankfully, she missed enough times thanks to Niles's resistance that he can escape without too much trouble.

Jakob and Corrine whittle down the trigger Lancer, keeping the top village available for the team. That's basically the hard part of the mission done, as I can take my time now.

And the other trigger Lancer activates reinforcements. You see how thin the margin is for getting the 10k award.

Niles is now running for his life, while Effie kills a mage gets to lvl 8. +STR/SKL/LCK/DEF

Man, he is just feasting on them today. I assume that this mission is slightly easier with Jakob because his strength is so much higher than Felicia.

I just wanna highlight what the average enemy unit is like in Conquest. Steel weapons with Quickdraw Fighters. Goddamn.

The team puts into motion of counter-assault before moving on to Flora and her father.

Do not have Odin fight mages.

Jakob, please stop killing everyone. I need EXP for other people, please

Arthur eliminates the trigger Lancer, and and nets himself more accuracy. While appreciated, I need him to diversify because he's not good enough to be a glass cannon.

I know, I'll lock myself inside. Oh, this is just awful. I hate being cooped up...

And that's 10k.

Elise gets a good level for healing Odin after literally 6 battles with that one mage. Christ, man.

You are definitely not Owain with those gains.

Jakob heals for another level before being attacked by Flora.

It's good to see you, though I wish it was under better circumstances.
Flora... When I left you at the castle, I never dreamed I'd find you here. Here with your blade raised in anger against she who you swore to protect. I know the difficulty of your situation, but that doesn't excuse your actions. I'm afraid I have no choice to settle this matter with force.
Jakob... In the b-beginning, I never swore my allegiance. I refused. After all, we were little more than hostages. Taken as children... All to prevent this from happening, to stop the Ice Tribe from rebelling.
I often thought of running away, but I never did. I stayed...because of you...
Flora...
I don't want or need your pity, Jakob! Let's finish this!

Doubling down that Flora is super into Jakob, despite not being able to support still. She is like super Catria, because Jakob can literally marry every other 1st gen girl in Conquest except her. Ouch.

Felica vs. Flora

Felicia, my foolish sister. Did you really think this rebellion could be solved by a few pretty words?
I'm no fool, Flora! You're the one who wants to fight without hearing us out! That in itself is a betrayal of pride and morality our tribe holds so dear!
You really don't understand, do you? This goes beyond words.
Don't you realize, all of our time in that castle was... I mean, it was just...
What are you saying, sister?
Forget it, there's no point telling you now, after all that's happened.
Let's get on with it. You may be my sister, but I won't go easy on you!

Corrine vs. Flora

I'm sorry, Corrine. Not for my actions, but for this unfortunate circumstance. Milady, as your retainer, I know this is tantamount to treason.
But my family... My tribe...
We simply cannot bow down to Nohrian rule.
Flora... No need to apologize. I am the last person ever to begrudge you for your loyalties, my friend.
Still, I shall do all I can to suppress this rebellion, albeit in my own way.

For gently caress's sake, Jakob. That's like the 5th crit today. I needed that EXP for Odin.

Kilma is annoying. That home base tile combined with Nosferatu makes it very hard to kill him in a quick fashion.

The basic plan is to have Niles tank the hits while Jakob gets a hit off a dual attack to weaken Kilma.

Corrine vs. Kilma

I was a fool to allow myself to be deceived by appearances. You are not the legendary hero after all. What a shame.
I make no excuses for what my people have done to yours, Kilma. No matter how this ends, all I ask is that you listen to what I have to say.

Felicia vs. Kilma

Felicia, my dear child. I never thought I'd see this day. Taking up arms against your own people, siding with the enemy...
Father, please don't say such things! This is the last thing I ever wanted.
It pains me to raise a hand against my precious daughter... But alas, this is how it must be for the good of the tribe. Gods, forgive me.

A couple levels in the process of battling Kilma. Elise getting defensive stats all of a sudden.

Silas gets the final blow because he can actually kill Kilma unlike a certain curse of darkness...

And a free Talisman as the boss drop.

The way I always did this map was piggyback Effie onto Silas and have them beeline for the top village while Niles and Elise go for the left one.

Also, Odin's kid loving rules and seconding that we get her (and give her the only correct mom)

Yes, Niles' and Camilla's reclass option is the Dark Mage line. The problem is that the people with Dark Mage/Troubadour as their reclass are almost always better in their native class lines, like Effie and Camilla. We'll see another case of "no seriously, why the gently caress is your reclass option a magic class when your magic growth is chicken fried rear end?" much later in Conquest

This is what I did on my Conquest Lunatic run and it made Odin one of the backbone units on my team. ELDRITCH SMACKDOWN

Similarly you can do the same with Goddess Icons and Arthur to almost completely mitigate his luck/pskill, especially since Goddess Icons give +4 LCK instead of +2 like in the other games.

Yeah, gotta nth the consensus that Odin sucks (and his kid is excellent). Sadly he's one of the few characters who gets access to Samurai class, and theoretically with his growths he's better off as a samurai but a) he's still not good enough as a samurai to justify using a second seal on him and b) you'll need to baby him for a while if you switch and this is not a good point in the game to have to baby a character, especially since you're gonna also have to baby Mozu (unless you're one of those degenerates that doesn't use Mozu).

Because the game already has mechanics for Effie getting troubadour because Elise with A+ supports. When there's an explicit mechanic for a character picking up the same class as a friend, giving them mechanically lovely options by default feels much worse. I mean, Awakening had a few points of precedent like Cherche, but for the most part people got classes that were both relevant to them and useful.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

Thanks to your valiant efforts, we managed a victory without taking any lives.

You see that line? You will see that line a lot.

Elise, will you please attend to the injured, regardless of what side they fought on?
Leave it to me! I'll have them all healed up before you can say "Elise is the best!"

*Elise and Jakob leave*

I don't know. I do like the implication that Corrin in Birthright was a no-question killer in combat.

What are you playing at, Princess of Nohr?
This is no game, Kilma. I don't believe in killing for the sake of killing. Nor am I inclined to repay kindness with violence. I still owe you my life, after all.
Even though we attacked you first, while you were weak, you still showed mercy...
I would love nothing more than for this day to mark a turning point, for all of us. One fueled not by force, nor control, but by mutual trust. I know it will take time. It won't be easy, but in my heart I know it's the only way.

Whatever the consequences, I want to build a world we can all live in peacefully.
Could it be...you really did intend to stop this rebellion with words, as Elise said? I would say it must be hereditary, but Elise isn't actually your blood relative.
Wait, then are you not a princess of Nohr after all?!

"Well, I can turn into a dragon like my murder dad"

It is true, Flora. I found out during my brief time in Hoshido. I am not King Garon's true daughter, nor this kingdom's true princess. But I wish nothing more then to end this war, for all of us and for all kingdoms. That is why I must do all I can to make Father recognize me as his kin again.

Garon has been approaching double-digit attempts at murdering you in less than a week at this point.

I had no idea. I seem to have missed a lot after leaving the Northern Fortress...
...
Forgive me, Lord Kilma. I know what I'm about to ask is a somewhat selfish request. But I must ask all the same... Will you and your tribe agree to halt your rebellion? In return, I promise to do all I can to give your people back your autonomy. I will not rest until the Ice Tribe regains the freedoms Nohr so cruelly stripped away.

...
You are full of surprises, young princess. I never thought I would say this, but you may count on our full cooperation.
Kilma! I...thank you! I swear to you, you won't regret this.
There's a fierce kindness in your eyes, a mysterious calmness in your words. I'm afraid I can't help but take you at your word, Lady Corrine. If King Garon had said those words, it would have made no difference. But you... You are a different story. I can't help but believe in you.

10 bucks said Garon said those same words on Birthright before beheading Kilma

Haha, I'm not so sure about that last part, but I thank you for your trust.
Lady Corrine, can you ever forgive me? I know I betrayed my oath to serve you and ran away from the castle, but...
No need to apologize, Flora. You did nothing wrong. It was wrong of the Nohrian kingdom to corner you like that, especially as a child. I will, as ever, speak highly of you to Father.

How about you just never mention that Flora ran away from the castle in the first place...? That probably helps a bit more.

Your kindness knows no bounds, Lady Corrine. Thank you. Though I previously refused to do so, I here and now swear my fealty to you.

So does that mean you join our party?
What? Why would I do that?
Oh....

Without you and Felicia, I would have died of loneliness in the Northern Fortress. You have more than proven your fealty to me, as well as your friendship.
But that was all just a big... I mean, that whole time......
I guess it doesn't matter now anymore. From now on, I promise to be truly loyal to you.
I'm not sure I fully understand, but the sentiment is much appreciated.

*Jakob and Elise return*

Thank you, Elise. And you too, Jakob. You both did well today.

This scene proves they're not constrained to putting story beats assuming characters have their default class. But that still doesn't stop them from other characters never mentioning that Corrine is a goddamn dragon after the route split. No one certainly mentioned it in all of Birthright.

Indeed, we all did! Now all we need is for King Garon to recognize your victory...
Oh, I forgot about that part! What are we going to do? You were supposed to stop the rebellion on your own, but we ruined everything.

You mean angrier?

Ugh, I had forgotten that part too. Well, I'll consider my options on the way home.
Are you leaving already? Can I not persuade you to stay and rest a while?
I'm afraid time is of the essence, Lord Kilma. Next time we meet...I dearly hope the world will be a better place.
I have every confidence it will be, Lady Corrine. May the gods protect you on your perilous journey toward peace.

Lady Corrine, please wait! Us villagers wish to thank you. You went out of your way to prevent us from engaging in a futile battle. Though our soldiers tried to defeat you, you still protected and even healed us. Take this as a token of our appreciation, I insist!

And that's 10k gold, which is sorely needed.

Class and Character Overview

Outlaw

Pair-up Bonus: +2 SPD/RES, +1 MOV
Weapon rank: Bows (B)

Skills: (lvl 1) Locktouch-User can open doors and chests without requiring keys
(lvl 10) Movement +1

A little disappointing that they just have literally the same lvl 1 skill as Ninjas, considering they bothered to rename Orochi's ability for Niles. Anyways, Outlaws are your archers for Nohr but are more about utility than being damage dealers. They move far, they pick chests, and still take care of pesky fliers.

Dark Mage

Pair-up Bonus: +3 MAG/RES
Weapon rank: Tomes (B)

Skills: (lvl 1) Heartseeker-When fighting adjacent to an enemy, enemy’s Avoid -20
(lvl 10) Malefic Aura-Enemies within a 2 tile radius receive 2 extra damage from magical attacks

Heartseeker is one of the more interesting skills, as it gives a risk/reward system of making usually low accuracy weapons a huge boost but giving up the safety of ranged weapons. Obviously best against other mages because you're not giving up anything there.

Malefic Aura is just +2 damage in most cases, they ran out of ways to diversify +2 damage or something. I guess it's a troll move so you can't have multiple +attack skills if you switch classes.

Odin

Class sets: Starts as Dark Mage, Samurai
PSkill: Aching Blood-When equipped with a forged weapon whose name is at least 12 characters, Critical rate +10

Growth Rates
HP: 55
STR: 45
MAG: 50
SKL: 55
SPD: 45
LCK: 60
DEF: 45
RES: 30

What the hell happened, Owain. You'd think with his growths that he came from the GBA games, not Awakening. Even Orochi is more useful than him because she fills the niche of being a magical nuker that kills any unit that doesn't have infinite resistance. Odin...is just there.

Aching Blood is a cool trick that makes forged weapons a little better, but forged weapons themselves are game-breaking already so it doesn't help him that much.

Niles

Class sets: Starts as Outlaw, Dark Mage
PSkill: Kidnap-When there is a Prison in My Castle, the user can select the “Capture” command. If a generic enemy is defeated, they will be sent to the Prison

Growth Rates
HP: 40
STR: 45
MAG: 25
SKL: 50
SPD: 70
LCK: 30
DEF: 30
RES: 60

I wasn't kidding when I said Niles is built for mage killing. He will gain speed and resistance, anything else is a nice surprise. He's better than Setsuna at being a speedy archer, but worse overall because of the lack of Quickdraw to bolster his offense. So he starts out strong, but falls behind quickly as far as solo-murdering like the archers in Birthright did.

Fun thing regarding that map, with good placement of your high movement units you could actually visit 4 of the 5 houses though it does come close. Unfortunately, the game has no such reward for going the extra mile and you'd be treated as if you visited the 3 with less EXP to feed to your units.

The best use I've found with dealing with Owain's shortcomings is to give him one of the special classes like Dread Fighter or Lodestar, because yeesh, the trip from Ylisse to Nohr really did a number on his growths. Whoever the travel agent was that booked the flight needs to be punished for turning Owain into mediocrity, a feat I never thought possible.

I'd honestly Niles is better off than Setsuna in the late game, if only for the fact he can get staffs upon promoting (and, ya know, he's a thief). And his magic growth is nothing great, but it's enough to be a decent back-up staffbot. Utility is the name of Niles' game, after all.

And while Odin is a pretty steep downgrade from his Awakening self, his outfit is a straight upgrade.

Wallet Inspector

Odin is definitely fixable with Spirit Dusts, IIRC a lot of them drop in Conquest. Give him a Mag boosting pairup as well and he can be solid. That said, between Leo and Corrin there's not a lot of reason to invest xp into him unless you like his character (which you should).

Niles is pretty great, I'd say the best bow user in Fates because of all the utility he brings outside of being a bow user. Lockpicking, anti-mage (despite WTD), capture, staves or extra Mov on promotion and good pairup bonuses are all great. In general I like the idea of bow-based thiefs and consolidating utility into one unit.

Wyvern Elise is a weird choice, but I've tried it before and it can work, mostly because Wyvern is such a fantastic class. She gets a fast support with Arthur and Effie, so you can use them as pairups to boost Spd or Def as preferred early on. Her bases, with tonics and pairups, held out long enough to get her to Level 15, at which point she promoted to Malig Knight and got Tome usage. It's nowhere near optimal, but it can certainly work.

Funny thing is, this is EXACTLY how you attack with Dragonstones in this game.

Odin - Offensively speaking, he's kind of crap. At least he's reasonably accurate, I guess? Doesn't make up for his lack of firepower, though... Maybe he's meant to be a crit-spammer, but falls short in the stats that would make that worthwhile.

Niles - His base growths are strictly average in pretty much everything; his HP are a bit on the low side, but it's not like you're supposed to have him getting hit anyway, since his primary jobs are collecting items and recruiting generics (the latter of which is more of a "finish the guy my other unit weakened off" thing than real combat).

The fact that they literally have the same skill on two classes has a very understandable explanation: Why would they bother with two skills that do the same thing? Niles and Orochi get a pass because they've got identical personals (possibly with different "flavor" justifying it), but class skills that do the same thing? Might as well just make them teach literally the same skill and be done with it.

You couldn't even beat Assassincopter!!!
Odin is not mechanically amazing but he's serviceable. That said, he makes a surprisingly solid Samurai if you feel like blowing a Heart Seal and probably an Arms Scroll on him. I also loving love his passive, it's so him.

Niles kinda suffers a bit from the WTA as a magekiller, especially since he doesn't get the ridiculous skill of Archers and the Dual Yumi is unavailable, but he's still quite good at it and brings solid utility to the board elsewhere. And Kidnap is kinda extremely very incredibly good on Conquest, especially on Hard and Lunatic. In Birthright captured units tend to be serviceable at best, but you can capture an amazing amount of those assholes with bullshit skillsets, and one of the best in the game is in the very next level!

you wouldn't drop, couldn't drop diddy, you wouldn't dare
I made Odin into a samurai, which seemed more fitting and he's turning out alright.

Or you can see me at The Riviera. Tuesday nights.
Pillowfights with Dominican mothers.
Besides possibly Mozu, Niles is really your only bow option for a lot of the early Conquest maps, so that definitely gives him an anti-flyer role beyond his more obviously perceivable anti-mage utility. Hoshido loves them some Peg Knights too, so it's open season for our boy Niles.

Yeah, ignoring heart seals Niles is the only bow user you get until you start promoting units, and even then only 4 units have the option to promote into a bow user (two mercenaries who can become bow knights, a ninja who can become a puppeteer, and Mozu who can become a merchant)

2nd Place.
1st Loser.
For people following along at home, Mozu should become an archer ASAP when you get her. Niles usually isn't strong enough to deal with all the flyers and until Elise promotes you're hurting on the ranged front.

...Although Jakob is here and he's does actual damage early on unlike Felicia. Meh, getting a 2nd archer is very useful.

I forget which of her supports it's mentioned in, but Cherche had Cleric and Troubadour as her reclass options in Awakening because she was in training to be a cleric before she encounter Minerva and realized her destiny of flying around and murdering people with an axe. So there is an actual backstory justification for her having those class options despite being mechanically ill-suited to them.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
I never really understood the Odin-Samurai hype, because his growths are as average

HP 65
STR 45
MAG 30
SKL 70
LCK 55
LCK 75
DEF 40
RES 30

The only real difference is that he gets 6 more speed when class changing, but that's still only 12~ speed which isn't special. He'd basically be Hinata except Hinata wasn't good enough in an easier game. And he becomes a sword user when Silas and Corrin already take up all the swords.

He's a bad magic unit, but a bad magic unit still fills a niche over yet another weak melee fighter.

I mentioned it at the beginning of this LP, but I'm not capturing units. I'm also holding off on a heart seal until after chapter 10 or 11 because the character selection is pretty low right now.

It was Vaike/Cherche. Cherche met Minerva as a kid and bonked its head with her staff.

Odin's growths make it better for him to go Dark Knight (the okay-but-not-great Strength growth means he can actually be a decent sword user). The other Dark Mage is definitely meant to go Sorcerer.

Well, maybe I got lucky with him! That's what you hope for with Erk-types: you either go big or go home.

I might have been less clear than I meant to be there.

My intent was to say that Cherche has character related classes that don't work well for her as a unit, like with Effie. Not that Cherche's classes made no sense.
