I fear Macron has managed to convince enough people that he's a centre candidate (lol), and too many people fall for the good old "truth is in the middle".

Hamon got hosed through no real fault of his own. It's just that Hollande taking forever to accept the fact people hate the poo poo out of him meant the PS had to throw a primary on short notice while all the other candidates were already campaigning. And then, whatever little time he had left to make an impression was taken by the lying rat bastards of the Valls wing deciding it was gonna be their lovely brand of neoliberalism or nothing. But like, his program was good, getting a deal with Jadot was a necessity, and he wasn't an evil fucker. It's just that Hollande and Valls did their damndest to destroy the PS because their egos got bruised.

Soooo if for some ungodly reason Le Pen ends up winning not just tonight but the whole shebang, I understand that she's nonetheless going to have a hard time getting much of her stuff through the parliament? Could she organize a referendum on the EU by herself? Would the FN need to win in a parliamentary election for Le Pen to really be able to "remettre la France en ordre"? I know that the French president is powerful but surely there are quite a few checks and balances in place still.

The same obviously would apply to Macron etc. in this case too.

That's the trick. Don't do anything during your presidency, blame parliament for your failings, abolish it. The French loving hate parliament.

The parliament gets it's own elections in june though, and whoever wins the presidency starts that campaign with such a big legitimacy boost that they can probably get themselves a majority.

At least that's how it goes with the PS and LR who have a shitload of local presence and a deep bench. The FN has had a lot of trouble finding "presentable" local candidates who want to stick with the party for the long run (wonder why).

And then there's Macron who has no party and no second stringers except for Bayrou and the PS traitors (who all have eyes on cabinet positions).

tldr: who the gently caress knows, this election is insane

Man why you gotta lead a poor innocent goon to believe they can say stuff like "dissez" and not be ridiculous?

Pro-link of the day for when you wonder about how a French verb is conjugated. Use it to try to speak using the subjunctive imperfect as much as possible as it is objectively the Best Tense.

When I lived in London, French expats seemed to veer a lot more right than that, mostly UMP or FN. But I guess the motivator for these (mostly wealthy) people is primarily fiscal policy, so Macron deffo makes sense.

Have people really forgotten the high expectations for Hollande leading to his election? Hamon could be the literal second coming of Jesus Christ, he would still ultimately give in to PS's neoliberal wing.

Macron is probably the worst social choice but when you say the polls more than 50% of the french people leaned right and around only 30% leaned left so they actually seem to want to suffer more. Funny thing is Macron is BCE boy so he'll push for economical changes France has been trying to avoid doing for a while (and of course mid class will pay for it)

I know that in America you've got to tick a bunch of boxes to vote or punch holes in a card or whatever but in this here country we've got to put a literal ballot with the candidate's name in print , put it in an envelope and post it in the ballot box. So quaint.

That's my voting story.
