Just in time for us to buy a house lol (which I think is the reason why my wife scheduled this meeting in the first place) yeah as Agronox said you probably don't want to buy anything they sell. here is how it works at my company: we charge 1.0% (0.5% for bond only portfolios)of the portfolio value (+ accumulated income because we want every penny) over the course of a year. we have ever incentive to increase our clients' portfolio value a financial advisor who sells you investments makes commission. they arent going to be actively involved in managing your portfolio and probably dont give a poo poo about anything besides selling you what gets them the largest commission. they have no fidicuciary obligation to ensure theyre doing the best with your money. i believe this is something you can thank trump for, becuase for a while they did have to act in a fiduciary capacity if they sell you a fund you want to load up morningstar dot com and look at the expens ratio. this is a calculation of the overall fee a company charges to manage the fund. it should be low, way below 1.0%, for any fund that is basicalfly modeled after the S&P500 or the Russell 1, 2, or 3,000 or whatever. i would say even half a percent is tooo high and that youre better off reading something like bernstiens "If You Can: How Millenials Can Retire as Millionaires." except if youre not ttouching the funds for sseveral decades then convert the bond portion to USsmall cap and dont buy bonds until youre like 50 or whatever
