Anybody have experience with the knock off durametric tools? I'm a little annoyed that the drl's are the main HID lamps and would want to switch them off and do some wiring so that the foglights become the drl's. Also would be nice to be able to turn off the service reminder when it inevitably comes up.

The $1000CAD for the pro tool that can do the drl's is a little hard to swallow, especially since I still can't decide how long I want to keep the car. From reading rennlist and planet 9 it seems the knock offs are either the cats rear end or they're liable to be faulty and can fry the ecu upon being plugged in.

Any suggestions? This would be for use on a 987.1 Boxster.

Buying a pro might not be the worst idea since it should hold resale pretty well since it's not VIN limited but a good specialist shop would probably do it cheap so that would be my first step.

Test drove a '09 Cayman S with a 6-speed Manual.

I didn't have too much trouble rev-matching up and down the gears, but one thing that made me slightly worried was the shortness of the throw/travel and the lack of response of engagement of the stick shift.
I'm currently daily driving a VW GTi and it has an almost identical shifter knob, so I was pretty comfortable with the ergonomics, but when I throw my car into gear, I know it's in gear 100%
The Cayman was such a short throw that I was constantly worried I was going to put it halfway in gear and chew the transmission up.

I'm glad I took the manual out for a spin though, made me 100% certain will want to pick up the PDK transmission.

I'm confused by this. I went from a 6-speed GTI to a 6-speed cayman and had no trouble getting in the car and shifting. I think it's also ruined me for any other manual transmission.

My miatas ruined every other manual for me, the Cayman/Boxster is the only thing even close to as good, which means they are amazing.

Yeah, it really is compared to the Cayman and the Miata. My previous car was an e36 M3 which had the worst clutch/shifter I've ever used so the GTi was a massive upgrade.

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but I went with a '15 BMW 230i with 17k. It just felt great right off the bat.
Planning on trading it in for a '14 Caymen when they come down in price.

That's exactly what it was. I was nervous the whole time wondering if I was actually in a gear or if it was just sort of engaged.

I had an older Boxster (2003, I think). I think it was my least/third favorite manual of my life.

The manuals in my current WRX (with short shift kit) and my old 1995 civic seemed better.

Though I thought the Boxster was still pretty good, so maybe I've just never driven an overly bad one.

A tale of two Porsches:

I've always wanted a 944. Been passively looking for awhile. I'd drive it for maybe a couple thousand miles in the summer, then store it in a storage unit while I get out my trusty winter beater. Or I could put it in my backyard - I have room - a storage unit just sounds like a better idea. And they're not expensive.

Anyway, I kinda want one that's rough on the outside but mechanically pretty sound. At least sound enough. I want one 1985+ because I like that interior better but (as you can see below) I'm not going to rule out the older interior if it's in nice shape.

One showed up recently on my way to work so I called and today, stopped by to have a look. It's a 1985.

It was kind of a pile of poo poo. Sunroof was taped closed, rear hatch didn't close all the way, I don't think the windows worked, interior was in rough shape (though the seats had been redone), tires were awful, most anything didn't work. It's been sitting for awhile. Also, it was a theft recovery. Something about drug dealers, possibly the cartel. It came from Texas. He wanted $3500 for it.

He drove me to his house, where he has two more. One was completely apart but the body was decent. The other, a 1984, was in much better shape than either:

He said it runs fine, but I'd verify that of course. It's not perfect by far. It also needs tires. No idea when the timing belt was done for either car. That one was originally guards red but has been repainted. He wants $4500 for it.

I've thought about offering $4,000 for the red one, maybe even having him swap the black wheels from the black car onto it, but at the same time it's the first one I've actually looked at and I'm in no hurry. But just from looking around, I don't know if I could find a better example for four grand (which is about what my budget is). And I'd have to immediately get tires and a timing belt job done, which I've called around on and if you get the water pump done too, which you should, comes out to about $1600. Yikes.

Thoughts?

Neither of those are that good and the second one is probably worth 3-3500 but once you're into that price range there's not a lot of solid cars to choose from. Cool. I might be able to do a quick look at if you're about to buy it but there's a best-in-region Porsche specialist called Steinels 30 minutes away who further specializes in 944s if you want a real PPI. They charged me 250 for a 996 one and did a great job on short notice. There's also a VW/Audi/Porsche specialist about 10 minutes away in Parma that used to service my S4 who are genuinely terrific people at German Auto Pros who could give it a solid going over.

I talked to the guy for a bit. It's been about 30k since the last timing belt replacement, so it'll need that done. The A/C doesn't work (not a big deal) and it's not the original paint - the guy said it's not the best paint job. Looks alright from the pictures though, in my opinion.

I mean, it does have a new clutch as of last year, and a ton of receipts. The places I've called have all wanted about $1600 for a timing belt job, assuming you're replacing the water pump too. Ugh.

Don't you need a special Porsche tool to get the belt tensioned correctly? Or is it not that important?

There's a tool available for proper tensioning of the belts through Arnnworx for $165. I have one that I use on my 944 spec car and it's both easy to use and has consistent results.

Really, the timing belt job is way easier than you might think. Sometimes the pulleys can be a bitch, but I think the most annoying part is getting the radiator in and out.

Edit: They also sell all the thin wrenches and whatnot you need for the job.

Oh man, I've only done the one so far because of the cold (weekend is back on the teens so I'm being lazy and waiting) and the plug took some playing back and forth to get the threads loose enough to remove without fear of shattering the plug. I'm hoping the rest I'll be able to weasel out with the same loosen-tighten-loosen rinse repeat pattern.

Snaked an endoscope into the hole and I've got a little bit of carbon but it's not terrible I think, there's a decent area on the piston that's clean where I'm assuming the incoming air/fuel mix cleaned it out. Pictures will come later.
