im not sure why it's a surprise to a lot of people that the french turned out to be terrible when they literally have a governmental bureau whose entire mission is the protection of the french language from idioms and influence from other, more barbarous languages this is literally a government organization that tells people to stop using popular idioms because they are not french enough lol

The french academy doesn't ban borrowings though. The last spelling reform included a ton of them mostly so that they fit the phonetics of the language (as spoken in Paris, lol). And there's a bunch of prescriptivists who would cream themselves if english had such a thing.
