By the time you get to episode three an eight year old kid has sliced off another person's fingers and stabbed him in the neck. I know a lot of people argue that the show gets better in later seasons -- and I think it does -- but it's also deliberately setting up a contrast over its opening episodes. Having just rewatched most of the first season, I'd argue that the only poor episodes are the seventh and eighth ones. The earlier episodes serve a very deliberate aesthetic purpose.

How are u posted:I got around to watching the finale last night and holy smokes they really blew their budget on the CG for the proto-demon! It looked really good for a TV show. Every time it was on screen (lots! expensive!) I was thinking about how much worse it could have been. I mean, they make the effects in general look so good that at this point I just expect them to handle making a big CG creature look convincing. It's the "problem" of anything that does its job well again and again, you get used to it so if there's even a minor inconvenience or dip in quality it stands out. They do deserve praise for that though, it's the one effect that you see in almost every movie lately and increasingly on TV and they certainly did it better than usual. I'm sure it didn't hurt that they were making something slightly larger than human and that was supposed to be alien in appearance, compared to trying to make a CG flying superhero or something that's supposed to look human, or mostly human.

Because of the blue, I couldn't help but compare them to white walkers, and I thought the CG on the protomonster was better than the CG for the white walkers, personally. Not a bad outcome given the budget differences between shows!

I was pretty satisfied with this finale despite the continued odd pacing from season 1. All the big setpieces came off well and although there was nothing on par with the Julie/Miller scene I got goosebumps a couple times.

I liked the season and thought it was much better than S1, but the climax of the season for me was Miller/Julie. That was wonderfully weird and cool. Kinda feel it lost a bit of steam after that, no doubt because of no more Miller. Avasarala and Bobbi make up for it though but Bobbi only really had like one or two good scenes

Not necessarily bad, but it's going to make for some weird television. It MIGHT kind of be good. Broad-scale galaxy threatening stuff would get tired after a while. Smaller scale challenges are interesting.

I watched this show and enjoy it. I like that its basically someone's pen and paper rpg campaign they came up with after watching a bunch of Gundam and the Rocinante crew is basically the player characters, with Holden being the boring leader and everyone came up with good characters like Amos.

Really sad that the show didn't do the book scene of Avasarala getting an intel report on James Holden, interplanetary master of intrigue , showing up on Ganymede in a new ship and getting ID'd by the inspection team and making sarcastic comments about it and his sad beard disguise.

Since we're on holdenchat and this is related, here's a specific that bugged me. Even happened to be in the scene they used as a preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4HMzpxuSJU&t=55s This is actually probably more directing / script than the actual actor (he doesn't even have any lines) but something about his lack of reaction really bugs me. Consider how far away he is physically from where Naomi and Alex are both swearing like some part of his ship is on fire, and when the camera lets him in frame he's kind of just lounging against a chair poking something. There's a distinct lack of hurry, and it annoyed me. Here's this thing that he Ahabed about just a couple hours ago on his ship and all he has for it is the same glower. No real fear, no frustrated punch to the console. Just some furrowed brows.

Soren Errinwright in the books is darker than Avasarala and "looks like he's from the Punjab" but speaks with an English accent. Is this whitewashing another reason Riz Ahmed is going to encourage London actors to join ISIS?

It doesn't exactly look great that they made both of Avasarala's superiors white when neither was in the books. Unrelated to that, in terms of writing, I think the most changed character has to be Martens. In the books he really was a chaplain and grief counselor who knew Bobbie's dad a little and tried to help her with her PTSD. Show-Martens is more like Thorsen (Thorsson in the books), who goes with Bobbie to Earth and tries to make her stick to the script.

I've made my peace with how much they've had to condense the show, and I've enjoyed it a lot more because of it, and the fact nobody's really making good hard sci-fi nowadays.

Holden is sort of necessary because you usually need someone to ground the more interesting/zany characters. Also, I think for the most part his decision making is pretty logical. Yeah, he may have went Ahab at the last encounter, but I can totally understand him wanting to stop the protomolecule after Eros. It basically was a cause for him, Holden is simply a pretty average dude who went to space to find one. The rest of the Roci crew have more personality, so no doubt they are going to be more interesting. Also, I don't think it is the actor as much as the script. Like someone said a 'better' actor may get a little bit more, but probably only a little. Also, I like Aversala's bodyguard and Bobbie, but I don't even know bodyguard dudes name.
